Well yeh, thats it really. When I got my drum kit I ignored the basics. I went fairly quickly into the use of a double bass pedal - Which I feel made me miss a lot of single pedal stuff. Is there any chance you guys can post some beats (single pedal stuff). Not basic/starter beats but interesting and cool. Not particularly fast or anything. Just nice beats which I feel I've missed going from pure basics to blast :P However I do practice rudiments all the time on my practice pad :)

Cheers

If you do heel/toe, this is fun...

H|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
S|----o-------o---|
B|o-o-----d-o-----|

I can do that at reasonable speed with a single pedal.

It's relatively simple... just an adaption of the basic beat... but still fun. And it sounds awesome.

I like that beat there, I played it in a song for a gig and the "fill" for the end of a verse was just a simple variation-
H|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-O|
S|----o-----------o|
B|o-o-----d-o-o-o-|

Here:

C|-X---X---X---X--|
S|-o---o---o---o--|
B|d---d---d---d---|

You can do it with a double, but try it with a single to work on your open roll.

Less of a beat, more of a fill/intro.

Something I've been doing for my hand/foot coordination using heel toe on the double pedal...

t-|ttt----------|------------|--|
T-|------ttt----|------------|--|
f-|-------------|ttt---------|--|
F-|-------------|------ttt---|--|
B-|---ttt----ttt|---ttt---ttt|--|
S-|-------------|------------|f-|
In cut time (2 beats/measure) I'm at about 140 bpm clean. For the bass, my right foot plays
B-|t-t|
(Heel-toe double)

and my left plays B-|-t-|
Sounds great, good for coordination.

A little trick I learnt from Nicko McBrain (great for single bass drumming might I say! Iron Maiden is the band, check Ghost Of The Navigator, The Trooper and Where Eagles Dare)

H|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- |
S|-o---o---o---o--|
B|d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-|

I changed the hi hat orchestration myself, having it "offbeat" in relation to the snare timing.

Double right?

I think I'm gonna take my 7 peice and turn it to a nice single pedal 4 peice.

Nothing wrong with starting off using a DBP. I mainly got mine for using it "when I want". Nothing makes you use 2 feet but you.

if you really want to get good at single bass playing, take the slave pedal off of your kit entirely for a few weeks.

S|-----o----o----o-|
B|-o-oo-o-o---o---o|

Great funkish beat for building up foot speed...

a really simple little beat/exercise I like to do is single bass doubles like so:

.|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |
H|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
S|----o-------o---|----o-------o---|
B|oo------oo-----o|o------oo-------|

as you see, there's not much to it, but it's helped me do two very important things:

1) get comfortable doing double bass strokes (at quicker tempos, the movement of the foot/toes seems to change as you begin doing a bit more of a heel/toe thing)
2) work out the timing issues that are required in order to make the same double stroke work so that the 2nd stroke falls EXACTLY on the 8th beat it's supposed to if it's started 1/16th earlier, as in the second measure above

I just repeat this a bunch of times to warm up, increasing the tempo as I go along. it won't help with endurance, but it'll definitely loosen ya up a bit and get the timing back in sync as you're warming up.

If anyone could tab him out some broken triplets on the bass drum that would really help his foot. Stuff like John Bonham in Good times bad times. I have a section for that in realistic rock but I cant tab it out.

Start playing some punk beats , just the simple ones...

Get comfortably with them and then increase their speed :)

Whatever you play with a double, just take a bass hit out. That would make it possible and easier to play on a single. You might not have to tale a hit out if your good enough, I know plenty of people that can play as fast as DBP with a single. Its more impressive :thumb:

This is the common type of punk beat right? Because this is what I have heard in a lot of punk. Can you tell me the other punk beats or beats in a punk style. Cheers.

H|-x-x-x-x|
S|---o---o|
B|-o--o-o-|

For some reason I cant get them in line with eachother but the snare is on the hi-hat and the first bass is. :(

don't forget to do these single pedal excersizes with your right and left foot.

to get them to line up- [FONT="Courier New"] you put what you want in here. and you take away the space-->[ /FONT]
