I started playing banjo about a year ago. As far as banjo sites go, I would say bluegrassbanjo.org and ezfolk.com are two really good ones. The first has good tablature and the second has lessons, and the chords that your looking for.

i play clawhammer banjo

if youre writin/playin a tune, just stretch the strings up or down until it all works out in the end

i mostly play bluegrass. I'm still confused on what clawhammer even is. i read the thing on ez folk, but i don't get it.

Yeah, I'm totally drawing a blank on it.
Do you just hit it with the front of your nail?
How do you get it so fast?

instead of rolling or "fancy pickin" you just play the melody note with your first finger, then strum the strings all with your other fingers, then pick the top string with your thumb, all in a rolling pattern thats alot like playing triplets, but different.


i play a little different myself, instead of pluckin the melody note with the back of my finger i pluck upwards.



speed just comes from lots of practice, i learn tunes in a slow speed and then build up to a good jam once ive figured out the complexities of the left-hand technique.

really my best suggestion for "getting" clawhammer is to listen to alot of it. i love that old-time music; to me it just feels right.

The only music I listen to with a lot of banjo is the Duhks, and I do believe Leonard Podolak uses clawhammer.
It just blows my mind.

the duhks is progressive bluegrass type stuff

The Duhks are amazing.
They play a mixture of bluegrass, country, rock, and celtic music and they do it well. Their instrumentals are FANTASTIC.
