I got my 6 string bass after playing for 8 months, im now on 1 year, 3 months playing. I've progressed immensely since then. If you feel you need or want a new bass, then chances are you've progressed into a phase where you feel that's the right direction for your playing. The better the bass you have, the easier it is to play (my previous bass had huge action, my new one is a hugely better bass than my old vintage 4 string)

Like Phalanx said, if you feel that you need a new bass, then you're good enough to get one. I personally got a fretless 5 string about 2 months ago, which was about 10 months into playing, because I felt it would benefit my playing

I'll be making the jump to 6 strings eventually, heh.

The better the quality of the bass the eaiser it is to play, and the better you will sound. I'm not saying that getting a top of the range bass will make you a pro, but it will definatley help

my philosophy on buying basses: if you have the money and find a bass that you want buy it. if you suck and you get a bass handed to you thats when people will get pissed off. but if you worked for it and earned it thats totally cool. i hate when peoples parents buy all their equipment for them.

EDIT: i just noticed your user name. you wouldnt happen to be from wisconsin would you? and if so where?

Buy one if you have the money.

But remember, a new bass won't make you an instant Jaco. It will just inspire you to play more and to get better.

Hmmm...

My rec would actually be to buy a new amp, if you are getting the feeling you need to be buying- it will help you infinestimably more than a new bass, most people just get GAS for every bass they see...
