look what these kids are saying on a bmx forum i go on.

AH.

Travis barker is a HORRIBLE drummer/

Pfft, you're an idiot.

Regardless if you like Blink 182 or not, musically, Travis Barker is one of the most talented drummers the music business has to offer.
Yes travis is amazing and anyone that says other wise has no musical background. And he wife is extremely hott i saw her playboy shoot

What do you do!
This is like the worst ive heard it.

¬_¬

I'm assuming you're BigWheels...

And NEVER talk about drummers with non-drummers... they don't understand what's happening. I've played some stuff (which was pretty nuts for me) for some people I know, and they were bored. I started randomly hitting toms (no time, no nothing), and they thought it was awesome.

One of the books I own (begginner "how to" type book) even says when making a solo play fast and hit alot of stuff because the crowd will flip simply because it looks cool.. now not that I do that but..hey its true, it does get crowd response... just like in marching band..(or the movie drumline..ew) you have bands that want to be musically correct and others will just play things for a crowd response.. we've had bands come in horrible as *** playing brittany spears etc while our band (old director used to direct a drum corp) did Birdland..of course musically we were better, but they got better crowd response, because un-educated people don't get music.. they just see something cool as playing fast and hitting hard..its sad but true..

Brokensticks
12-25-2005, 06:16 PM
I agree, it's better to get the crowd pumped by just hitting random things fast, but start going into a musical solo after they're pumped so you have some pride.

I think people put Travis Barker on a pedestal. They place him out of reach with an attitude of 'I can never be as great as him'.
That's why I don't respect him...because I know that he feeds off of that... he's nowhere near any of the greats...
His skill level is attainable, and he knows that but all non-musicians think that he is some prodigy.
Hard work is all it takes...
Hard work is all it takes to get anything accomplished..
I played drums passionately and attentively for 5 years and I have caught up the all the drummers in my area that have played since they were 3.
It's not hard to become good at something, it just takes time and I it's frustrating when someone such as a non-musician takes someone's hard work and makes it seem like genius.
Barker isn't a genius, just a hard worker... get over him.

Anyways, the point is: nobody forced you to post on that forum, or to read that topic. As Jim said, all that matters is that you know your *** from a hole in the ground, so stick with that, and leave the ignorant to their bliss. Just like I admire Lars, Joey, and a whole bunch of other drummers.

BUT, I see them as what they are: not the top drummers.

People can be great drummers, but if they're not recognized as the best, you shouldn't say they are.

I have actually managed to change the opinions of 3 kids at my college! We were talking about the Transplants.....Barkers drumming skills came up, after I explained to them how he really isn't that good, they were like "hmm, I think you've got a point there".

Thats actually a bad thing rather than good. They used to like Travis and now they hate him because of what you told them. Best way to go about it is just show them other drummers and let them form their own opinion. If you show any "noob" a vid of Dennis or Vinnie then show them Barker I'm sure they'll take Dennis and Vinnie. My friends act the same way about Dave Grohl.

People are always complaining about how annoying it is that drummers can never explain to a "noob" that Barker sucks, then in the one rare case that a drummer changes a noobs views, someone comes along and says helping someone see the light is a bad thing!

RushHourSoul

It's not seeing the light... your basically telling them your drummers are better than theirs. If you were to talk about punk drummers thats different. They aren't really noobs either... just not exposed. I didn't learn about A LOT of stuff until I came here. Thank god for the internet. Whats even worse is I never see Barker telling people he's a great drummer or the best. But what I do see is people always rippin him.

Actually, I think he overplays quite alot. Most of the time he puts over complicated beats in a song where a simple beat would fit in alot better. Thats just the way it comes across to me when I listen.

I find that Grohl's not overrated skill wise. Just about everyone I know(musicians and non-musicians alike) says he's good, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim Grohl to be one of the greatest drummers.

He's one of my favourite drummers by the way. Not just for his drumming, which doesn't make him one of the greats, but I find he's pretty creative and fun. But for his attitude too. He seems to be a very nice guy and down to earth from what I see and hear.

ah, okey pokey...Sorry for calling you fat DBJ!

And as for grohl, he's not an amazing drummer or guitarist, he's an amazing musician...The foo fighters are one of the most listenable bands of the 90's and 00's, which says something about daves composing and arranging. Plus, a great live act. My mate went to see them on the 18th, i though she was gonna orgasm, going from the sound of her texts...

givemeaname
12-26-2005, 08:24 PM
I never said Grohl was an amazing drummer, just that I really like his drumming. As for his guitar playing, my knowledge of guitars is limited to knowing what I like and don't like. I know nothing about who's talented or not.

And for the Foos, it's not just his arranging. The Foo Fighters may have started out as Dave hiring musicians to play stuff he wrote, but in an interview, it's stated that it's now a callobrative(sp?) effort. Although I've never really liked the Foo Fighters, I agree they're very listenable - I don't mind them and really like a couple of their songs.

Travis made some kool beats that got me inspired to play the drums, now after a year of playing with a couple of a days of pratise i could learn most of his stuff except the really fast stuff and some things on box car racer. His marching fills are quite kool, i just need to practise my rudiments. Now I look to better drummers for inspiration and i worshipped him like a god when i started. He's good for inspiring people to start playing, and if they are really into it then im sure they'll realize there a betters. I think its starting to come around where i live that to the non musician hes not that good. Theres like a bunch of people from college dissing everything about him, his sticks, Orange County Drums. Straight Edge isnt a new trend, its been around for quite some time, I guess maybe now its a bit more popular, but when I was alot younger (12, 13) alot of my older friends were talking about it..there isnt anything wrong with it, I just find it kind of stupid to put a label on people who don't like drinking or smoking..hmm oh well. I enjoy a nice alchoholic beverage every now and than.. but lately its led to nothing but trouble lol..

It's flat out impossible to not do drugs. Perhaps you are referring to the illegal kind. But even then, that various from country to country anyway.

Ever take asprin? Cough medicine? Most head ache/pain relievers/cough medicines use fairly powerful narcotics to do there job.

Ever had nyquil? That's 27% alcohol.

It's a big joke, "I'm straight edge" "I don't do drugs."

Totally a load of crap, you do use drugs!! The ones you deem that are "ok" for use.

So whats the difference of taking asprin to make you feel better cause you have a pounding headache, or somebody chillin with a J after a st ressful day at work?

In both causes you are using a narcotic to make yourself feel better.

Have a favorite food? That's caused from a dopamine release.. pleasure foods flood hte brain with feel good chemicals.

Ever masterbate? Yea, that's to make you feel better too. Another dopamine release mechanism.

No human can ever say they do not make use of narcotics to make them feel better.
Be it they perform some activity to induce the body to release those narcotics, or take those narcotics or take some chemical that will induce the body's own narcotic production.

hahaha yes indeed!

I forgot about Caffine!

One of the most abused narcotics on the market. Now with the surge of energy drinks, it's become even more so.

Used a soda to wake you up? That's using drugs. Or a drug, caffine.

Nothing wrong with that at all of course, just it's plain foolishness to claim to not use drugs.

Exactly. I have many many friends who are addicted to the caffeine in coffee and the sugar substitutes (like aspartame) in Diet sodas.

Lars Ulrich is so much better than Peart, he can play the double bass at like 1,000,000 BPM

I have actually managed to change the opinions of 3 kids at my college! We were talking about the Transplants.....Barkers drumming skills came up, after I explained to them how he really isn't that good, they were like "hmm, I think you've got a point there".

A few weeks later, I heard the same 3 kids telling some other guys how much Travis sucks! A new world order has begun

Actually, I think he overplays quite alot. Most of the time he puts over complicated beats in a song where a simple beat would fit in alot better. Thats just the way it comes across to me when I listen.
Yeah, but even Travis himself knows this.

Pop drummers are really good you can argue that some are better then Portnoy because in concert they show off their chops. They are also the best timekeepers out of all the drummers and the cleanest(they cannot miss but eh, Peart never does either but hes the only one, I'm pretty sure Danny is good like that too). If you were to say someone famous like Travis Adrian Lars Grohl or people like that were better then yes you have the right to get pissed.

Okay, I'm pissed that you mentioned Grohl in that list, and I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but Grohl is absolutely, undeniably (if you have any clue what your talking about) a flat out great drummer. You cannot tell me that, after listening to all of his work, especially QOTSA's "Songs For The Deaf," that he doesn't deserve to be compared to Travis, or Lars. What he does with a single pedal on that CD is far and beyond anyone on this forum's skills. I'm sorry but I am absolutely pissed at you for mentioning him. Not to mention the dust brothers (the greatest record producers IMO, but undeniably one of the greats) chose him for the Tenacious D album, and he produced the tightest drumming I have ever heard in my entire life on that album. let the flaming begin...

Yeah ok, I know what you mean, its virtually impossible to avoid drugs nowdays. You know the type of drugs that i was refeering to. And i honestly dont take 'medical' drugs unless i really need to. Even when i have a headache i dont use paracetamol. I dont drink tea or coffee and im not a big fan of fizzy drinks (coke), in fact water my most prefered drink of all, even though that too probably has something added to it, i think the area i live in they add stuff that cleans your teeth (while at the same time clogs your arteries). The same goes for food, I cant help any of that though, unless i moved to some mountain spring somewhere and hunted food myself.

I dont like to intentionally take drugs because it makes you dependant on them. I read something about cafeene where some one who doesnt take it has naturally a more active brain, while someone who does take it, and if it is out of their system, have a less active brain, because they rely on the cafeene to wake em up.

What is the future eh? We wont be able to live without some artificial made something in us. We are so un-immune to nature.

P.S. chemicals released from sexual pleasure work in the same way, but hey they dont harm me so im fine with it.

My thought on this is that you have to play music to judge it. Otherwise STFU about it. Writing lyrics by the way isn't making music, it's poetry added to music. You don't need talent to write lyrics. Playing music on the other hand needs skills.

Big BS, it takes talent to write good lyrics, ever tried to write a catchy refrain, or put some weight into short sentence; writing lyrics is as demanding as writing an original riff or beat.?

No. Your logic is f*cked.

We're talkign about a group of chemicals classed very specifically as narcotics.

There ARE narcotics in food. Some in many others... it's already been proven that fast food companies add addictive chemicals to their food so you'll buy more.

And that's just the start...

No. That has nothign to do with logic.

That's a statement of fact, that is true.

No person could go through their lives and not make use of narcotics. It's absolutely, 100% impossible*.

*Speaking of developed countries, it would be very possible as a 3rd world poor person. Since those people aren't exactly on here.. it's kind of mute.
