I understand this could be beginner or advanced, but I'm not a beginner, so this is an invitation to post at least slightly complicated beats.
What I'm looking for is beats that incorporate the toms. It doesn't matter how much the beats focuses on the use of the toms, just post anything you can think of which does feature the toms.
I'll start off, sharing one of mine. It's a variation from a Judas Priest song called Revolution.
RLRLR R RLRLRLRL
RB|--x---x-|--x---x-| Note - RB = Ride Bell
T1|xx-x----|xx---x--|
T2|--------|---x----|
SD|----x---|----x---|
FT|--------|-------x|

You can use your feet to accent/add to that beat, but the hands are what I'm focusing on.
In this beat I'm digging the consistent ride bell hits. It sounds really good.

Ok this is a weird thing I made up. Theres a really fast hand/foot triplet in it and I wasn't sure how to tab it. Basically, on the 1-2-3 part, you play bass, floor tom, high tom with a very small space between each stroke rather than playing them all together like the tab shows.

C1=High pitch crash, C2=lower pitch crash.

C1|X----------------|
C2|--------X--------|
H |------X-------X--|
t |----3-------3----|
S |--o---o---o---o--|
F |o-o-2-----o-2----|
B |o---1---o---1----|

Here is the sticking pattern I use. I play a right handed set up and have Crash 1 on my left, Crash 2 on my right.

C1|L----------------|
C2|--------R--------|
H |------L-------L--|
t |----L-------L----|
S |--L---R---L---R--|
F |R-R-R-----R-R----|
B |F---F---F---F----|

RB|x---x---x-x---x-|--x-x---x-x-----|
FT|o-----o-----o---|o-----o-----o---|

Played up to speed, it's a very nice latin groove.

the best tom beat I've come across, EVER, is in modest mouse's 'truckers atlas'. check out the beginning here: http://www.obleek.com/stuff/musiciansforums/mm_truckers_atlas.mp3

the way I play it is a bit different from how it's actually played (for one, I'm missing the recurring ride bell sound on the first beat)...but it works for me, and seems to sound better than some of the ways I've seen it tabbed.

...|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |
HH |-------x-x------|
T1 |--------------oo|
T2 |oo----o-o-------|
FT |--o-------------|
SD |----f-------f---|
BD |o--o-o-----o----|

with sticking pattern:

...|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |
HH |-------x-x------|
T1 |--------------oo|
T2 |oo----o-o-------|
FT |--o-------------|
SD |----f-------f---|
BD |o--o-o-----o----|
...|RLR-L-RLRL--L-RL|

the two flams on the snare are noted with the L because it seems most comfortable as a rL flam (as opposed to lR).
oh, and the hats are played half-open, as you can hear

also, check out some sleater-kinney...and some mary timony. neither might be your cup of tea (think riot grrl rock, particularly sleater-kinney)...but both are VERY talented and sleater-kinney's drummer, janet weiss, has some really awesome and creative tom beats all over the place that actually [somehow] work with the music!

yeah jeremiah green (modest mouse's drummer......or former drummer, now that he's gone crazy...?) is/was a sick drummer. he's definitely not the most skilled technically (when compared to all of the legends, etc)....but the guy more than makes up for it in style. some of his stuff is so simple (simple enough for me to play!), but just done so well. later in that song I linked to above, he goes into a nice long groove that builds a bit by the end.. ~6 of the "normal" song, and another ~6 minutes of really simple but gooood grooving. :)

I'm going to try to post a few more tom beats from sleater-kinney.

ok, a bunch more. I only have the tab for a couple of em, though....and they're both pretty simple. what I think makes the modest mouse tom beats work so well is the contrast between the low thumpy toms and the sizzling half-open hihats + snare at the same time.. the low toms create a lot of anticipatory tension and when the snare + hats are hit, it's just soooo yummy. :) the same sort of thing happens with using the flams during the tom beats ('trailer trash' and 'truckers atlas'), though not nearly as much.

Perhaps a bit on the simplistic side, but I love the beginning of you could be mine by guns N roses.

T |------oo------oo|
F |o-o-o---o-o-o---|
S |----o-------o---|
B |o-o-----o-o-----|

and then after a bit put some crashes in at the same time as the first snare bit in the bar.

i.e.:

C |----x-----------|
T |------oo------oo|
F |o-o-o---o-o-o---|
S |----o-------o---|
B |o-o-----o-o-----|

You gotta play it reasonable fast, like atleast 120 bpm.

It doesn't really sound overly great on it's own, but works well in the song.

uhhh...

do you have 3 hands?

for beat 2, aren't you playing three things at once?

Do you just not play the snare on that, or the tom?

DuckinFutch
12-26-2005, 05:05 PM
O, and for that Trucker's atlas beat, I think in the begining you just subsitute the ride bell for the first tom hit... but still play the kick...

That's what it kind of sounds like to me at least...

unless maybe he's playing them both and playing the other part with just his one hand... idk...

Yeah, the beat I posted, RB is Ride Bell :) I thought I made that obvious in what I said after, but obviously not, sorry.

It's not about playing it at 120 bpm, it's about growing an extra limb for that crash.

I think it is. It sounds great too.

I think a mozambique has an extra "unision" hit. My teacher taught it me in how he said Steve Gadd plays it, and that sounds awesome

RB|x---x---x-x---x-|x-x-x---x-x-----|
T1|o----------o---|o-----------o---|
T2|------o--------|------o---------|

Im think that's it, notice the extra ride bell above the first note of the second bar. It sounds great, try it

ahh, good ear! makes sense with the sticking pattern, as well.. I was hearing the low bassy sound and figured it was a tom, but it might just be the bass and the ride bell, like you're suggesting. which would make it:

...|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |
RD |b---------------|
HH |-------x-x------|
T1 |--------------oo|
T2 |-o----o-o-------|
FT |--o-------------|
SD |----f-------f---|
BD |o--o-o-----o----|
...|RLR-L-RLRL--L-RL|

also, the original tab I saw for it said there was a snare ghost note immediately after the 2 flams on the 2 and 4 beats....and sometimes it sounds like that, but it's really so hard for me to tell. if you have any other suggestions, that would be great!! otherwise, I'm gonna stick with the bass before and after because it helps work up my timing better. :)

DuckinFutch
12-26-2005, 10:58 PM
haha, yea, I was trying it, and I just could not get it at any reasonable tempo...

But at the end I was at least getting fairly consistent with it at a really slow tempo, which is a start

yeah man keep at it! it's a TON of fun once you get it down at the same speed he's playing it at. I still slip up a bit with timing since it's a relatively awkward beat, but once in a while I'll just fall right into it and play a few PERFECT measures of it...and it just feels so damn good. :)

I had to play it real slow too when I first started, and I couldn't imagine how anyone would be able to play it so fast.. but just keep at it, and you'll get it!

as for everything else... well I'm going to print a bunch of these out and give them a shot next time I'm at the kit! tom beats are the best!

Hahaha, forgot to take the floor tom out.

But seriously, you play it with a 3ft drum stick, then hold the drum stick darth-maul style, i.e. fist-grip in the middle, then whack downwards, so you get the snare with one end, and the crash with the other end.

Heres a beat I just remembered I made up for my band AGES ago!

It started like this:

R |------b-------b-|
H |x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
S |----o-------o---|
B |o--o----o--o----|

Then after about four bars, I changed it over to the toms:

R |------b-------b-|------b-------b-|------b-------b-|------b-------b-|
T |--------o-------|o-------o-------|--------o-------|o-------o-------|
S |----o-------o---|----o-------o---|----o-------o---|----o-------o---|
F |o-o-o-oo--o-o-oo|--o-o-oo-oo-o---|o-o-o-oo--o-o-oo|--o-o-oo-oo-o---|
B |o--o----o--o----|o--o----o--d----|o--o----o--o----|o--o----o--d----|

Heres the sticking technique I used:

R |------R-------R-|------R-------R-|
T |--------L-------|L-------L-------|
S |----L-------L---|----L-------L---|
F |R-R-R-LR--R-R-LR|--R-R-LR-RL-R---|
B |o--o----o--o----|o--o----o--d----|

Enjoy!

Ooh I forgot my signature move :P
heh this is a beat I made whilst trying to figure out crossovers, and it really does work well. It's a favourite of mine, proud cos I wrote it only after about 3 months of playing

HH|-xo--xo---o---o-|
SD|----o---g----o--|
FT|x--------xx-xx-x|
BD|x--------oo-d---|

sticking pattern - rlr rlr(l)rlrlrlrl where (l) is the ghost note
What I particuarly like about this beat is the consistent open hi hat, and the double on the bass before the snare. When I play this, I cross over for about half of the beat, the second half, where my left hand is on the floor tom and my right hand moving from hi hat, to snare, to hi hat.

Looks impressive :P

This beat's also good is if, rather than playing a ghost note and then a floor tom hit, you do a right handed flam (so the accent is on the right hand), left hand on the snare, right hand on floor tom. Gives it a nice feel.
