Sheehan does not use scales, he just plays random things that he likes.

They were about to play Addicted to that Rush

P.S. I'm pretty sure Sheehan does use scales... whether he takes note of it or not is another thing.

Sheehan does use scales. The scales that I know he uses are the major, minor, and harmonic minor, but I'm sure there are a bunch more. What he does is memorizes every position of every mode so that he can go anywhere on the neck and know which notes will fit in which key he is playing in.

Precisely.

I'm pretty sure Addicted To That Rush is in A Minor.

He knows his theory, but you sure wont see him sitting there working out a solo before he goes onstage, he's played through his neck so many times he can just tear it up without even thinking about it.

Awesome player, killer groove.

Sheehan definetely knows his scales, since on his Advanced Bass Dvd he does a part where he taps and talks about using the G Major scale.

Ya, all of his solos are improvised. I've listened to a lot of his live solos and stuff, but the only bad part about him is that he basically does the same things throughout each solo. I'd say that this solo is one of his better ones: http://mrbigsite.com/audio/billy/Billy%20Sheehan%20-%20Bass%20Solo%202.mp3

I wouldn't say his groove is that special. That said you will not find a bass guitarist with the style that he has, and for that, he gets a lot of respect from me.

i dont think all his solos are improv, in one of them theres a section of a bach song.

Pardon my ignorance, but I failed to see the remotest amount of grooving in that video.

Its common to solo and throw in little bits on the spot to amuse the audience. I was watching Henry Johnson play guitar with two guitarist in this jazz band, and they were soloing with each other, and at one point Henry threw in inspector gadget.

Yes, but he puts stuff like that in whenever he feels like it. He said it himself on his Bass Day 97 video that all of his solos are improvised.

G major is an incredibly hard scale.

And to add to that, If you throw in another peice of a song that fits the key, on the spot, isn't that a form of improv?

I don't think anyone he meant he was grooving in that song. But he can groove. Long Walk Home is my example.
