Slide Sound Problem

First of all, can you use anything to play a slide? (classical guitar, Acoustic, Electric, 12 string?)

Secondly, when i play my glass slide on my acoustic, it makes a scratchy noise which isnt very good i dont think.
maybe the strings are old, or my technique is off, or what?
how can i change this?
