Hello

I am interested in learning slide guitar techniques, but it is a completely new form for me. I have 2 main questions.

1. What tuning options do I have for playing with a slide? All I know is that standard tuning does not sound right... I am assuming I need to use open tunings, but I have never messed around with that so I'm really not sure.

2. What are the specific differences (other than obviously, the type of material) and advantages to different types of slides? I've mainly heard of steel, brass, and glass...

Thanks to anyone who is willing to help.

Yeah, Open tunings are your best bet.

Something like DADFAD.

The material that the slide is made of makes a big difference in tone.

Steel, Brass and Glass seem to be the popular choices. Steel usually provides a thin, "stinging" sound. Brass is a bit rounder in tone while still providing enough "sting" and Glass is rich and clear in tone.

Personally, I prefer Steel or Brass for acoustic guitar and Glass or Brass for electric guitar.
