What mingus album(s) should i get? My jazz band played 'Children's Hour of Dreams', but there aren't any actual recordings of it i guess, but it's pretty avant-garde and the rhythm section sounds like they're playing black sabbath type stuff at times (that slow sludgey feel). So yeah, he seems like an interesting guy and i want to get a few of his albums.

Mingus Ah Um

The fact that it took that long for this to be mentioned is pretty amazing.

It's not that good, honestly, but it is certainly the most well known Mingus record.

Definately go for 'blues and roots' some really sweet sax playing on that song, if that what ur into, and pretty much just good musicians all round.

Pick up Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus first, without question. It's basically a best of album with a twist; Mingus reworks his classics with a different (many people say they are better) band. It was basically his way of saying "**** you" to Columbia and Atlantic because of the lack of freedom he got compared to Impulse! He plays: "Haitian Fight Song" as "II B.S.", "Nouroog" as "I X Love", new composition "Celia", Ellington's "Mood Indigo", his classic "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" called "Theme For Lester Young", "E's Flat Ah's Flat Too" by the name of "Hora Decubitis", and lastly another original named "Freedom". I personally feel this album is a loss if you don't hear it early on. I had already heard most of these tunes on their respective albums, so I felt like I had just thrown $15 down the drain by buying this.

With that said, my favorite Mingus albums are Blues & Roots followed by Mingus Ah Um. I don't feel either have a bad track on them, and both feature some remarkable tracks.
