My first time posting in the drum forums. Me being in a regular basis in the Guitar forums.
I would like to say Merry Christmas to you all.
Me being a dumbas$ in the drum world, i need help looking for a good set. My friend is our drummer in our band, he's been playing for almost 7 years, and he knows nothing of 'brands' but just scores whatever company rings his bells, (Sabian, Pearl..) He's a good drummer.. Okay to the point;
He needs a new kit! His old kit is completely beat up now, (he's been using it for 5 years, and it's all corroded and the cymbals are rusty, and it's a Pearl Forum something, his 2nd drumkit)
What are some good stuff to score?
Snares, Toms, Cymbals??
Pearl or Mapex?
Remo or Evans?
Alchemy or Sabian?
Whatever or whatever?
I've heard some good things about Alchemys and Istanbuls.
We play Thrash/Death metal.
We are willing to spend about 5000-6000 bucks.
Thanks, help is appreciated, and No bashing please.
Once again, merry christmas.
EDIT
Were looking for stuff that can play double-bass stuff and blast beats and what not.
Premier "Premier" series, maple.
Istanbul Cymbals.
Mapex black panther snare
Aquarian heads.

Anyways...
What kind/how many music stores do you have around you?
And do you want to go with 2 bass drums or a double pedal?
If you go with a double pedal, you'll be looking into Axis Longboards, Iron Cobras, or DW 9000s. Really the top pedals right now.

I would accually go with a mapex pro M 6 peice with DW 9000's or axis longboards(you have the money to spend) with sabian HHX and Zildjian K crashes, Meinl Byzantine(sp?) or paiste sound edge hihats, rides are personal but I'd go for a Sabian HHX raw bell ride, and a couple of wuhan chinas along with a paiste rude and zildjian oriental china. For a snare I'd go with a starclassic I played like five different ones at a sam ash near me and they were all spectacular all tuned differently. Not sure if it comes stock with a snare though and that snare is pretty pricey. He's been playing for seven years so he probably knows to use bigger sticks for more ride volume but he might not since he doesn't know alot about brands and crap he might not know that. For heads I don't know because I don't know much about heads or death metal.
Don't buy aHEADs they ruin cymbals and you can't do rimshots.

those black panther snares looks (and probably sound) like sex so i'd recomend one of those, i've only heard good things about them. For a drumset though i guess it's all his personal preference but pearl hasn't done me wrong yet so he could go with a pearl. Cymbals i'd suggest zildjian and sabian (as long as you don't go for their lower end stuff like titanium and crap) and wuhan for chinas....heads...Remo's are pretty good good, try the coated ones. and for double pedals i'd guess go with the iron cobra, seems to be top of the line there, especially since you seem to have a big amount to work with

nooooo!
Intead of telling him exactly what to get, have him go try out lots of stuff! try out the drums, the snares, the heads, and MOST IMPORTANTLY hand pick the cymbals!
Stay away from ziljian z's or anything with "metal, extreme, hardcore, X Z," in the name. Try and get versitile stuff. Id recommend trying some new beats or k customs for high hats, then mabye a k or HHX dry ride for ride, mabye some A customs for crashes, and hand pick a few wuhans for chinas. Try out alot of differnent sets and remember that you tune em later!:chug:

I have a girl from guam in my Culinary Arts class.....I live in Texas
<< as you can see
I wouldnt say to not go w/ z's or z custom's if you play gigs and you needa cutting cymbal...I just wouldnt use them for recording

Agreed^ and im not just "agreeing" with the majority of the forum, its just they arent very versitile and wouldnt want this persons drummer to be dissapointed.

I would go with a yamaha maple or birch custom. Full on paiste sigs, with a maybe a couple K custom crash, some A custom crashes. Some k custom dark hats. Then again that's what I would do if I had 6 grand. The only way you will know what you want it to go try it out. Every different company gets their own tone out of the drum. Same with cymbals. I would advise you go to whatever music store and go spends hours trying stuff out untill you have exactly what you want.

Dude...with $5-6k you could easily get a 9 peice Mapex pro M with a vast array of top quality cymbals and hardware....i was personally looking into something for the (distant) future for myself, and i added up the costs of everthing (including harware and cymbals) that i could possibly want.
for about 5.5k you could get:
a mapex Pro M 9 peice (2x22" kicks. 18", 16", 14", 13", 12", 10", 8" toms)
Yamaha Musashi snare (has a sharp *crack* great for metal)
an entire tama rack system + additional harware
axis A longboards
and about 8-12 top of the line cymbals (i would go Meinl....Byzance, Raker, Mb20 series.....Mb20 22" heavy bell ride is sweet imo)
but of course this is all personal preferance, and im not really sure what you have available to you in your area.

I don't know how mcuh most higher end kits are but definatly comsider Sonor drums. They sounds amazing and aren't too expensive either. For Cymbals you could get some HHX/AAX stuff from Sabian. I don't know much about Zildjian but A customs and K stuff seems to be whats good.

Everyone's just gonna throw different companies at you man. Basically just go with the big companies. All their top line stuff is quality gear. You basically gotta get him to try stuff out and see what he prefers.. Cymbals in particular. Having 8 cymbals all from different top line companies is potentially better than going with 8 cymbals from the one company as it gives you a wider range of sounds to work with.
As far as drum companies go you got Tama, Pearl, DW, Sonor, Mapex, Gretsch and Peace to name the most well known I'd say. All make quality drums in their top lines and it's just a matter of choosing what feels and sounds right to your drummer. And what seems friendlier to your wallet.
Harware is the same companies above really but whack Gibraltar on there aswell. All top lines are quality. Again its preferance and budget.
Cymbals you got your Zildjian, Paiste, Sabian, Meinl etc. Again, just ask a dealer for their advice on top lines (unless you're at guitar center it would seem) and then choose from there. Cymbals should take a bit more time in selection. They're pretty much a drummers voice (if that sounds right) and should be chosen with care. Just jumping in at Zildjian Z Customs because theyre made for Metal is not the way to go. Experiment and see what models go well together musically and what could even set your bands sound apart from others.
Remo vs Evans: The Epic Battle
Both do their job well and is just a matter of preferance. Evans have a few more gimmicks I'd say. Some of them pay off (the EMAD bass drum head) and some do not (Hydraulic heads). There really isn't too much seperating the two though. You could also consider Aquarian heads, although they're not quite as well known.
It's all fair enough when people advise a whole setup to you, but just remember that opinions are often biased. Go with whatever you feel is best from experience.

oh My.
I'm sorry son, there is no gear in the world that can play double-bass stuff and blast beats.
Only animate objects can do that, things that are living. Humans, Monkeys..
"We play Thrash/Death metal. "
Save your money, buy a pearl export and some low end cymbals. In that genere spending the money for cymbals like you mention would be an absolute waste. They would prob be destroyed within a month or two.
Considering as well the absolute lack of tone needed for that type of music. I'd even suggest not buying a kick drum, get a e-kick pad. Since you'll be filling the kick full of trash, muting the heck out of it and possibly even putting a metal patch on it. Why bother with the drum itself?
It won't matter for heads, or a snare drum anyway. Again, that genere of music, and considering who's asking. It'd never be noticed the difference between the high end gear and the low end.
The only thing I'd suggest spending any amount of money on is hardware, since your drummer will prob need some pretty heavy duty hardware.
Other then that..
Again to rephrase - Buying quality gear would be an absolute waste of money for you guys.

I play death metal, Josiah, but I like good cymbals and highly-tuned toms...
Good sound/stereotype.

That could very well be.
But it is the extremelly rare thrash/death metal album or band that even has remotely decent sounding drums.
And never any decent sounding kick. Always going for speed, they must use very fast, high attack sounds.
