Hey everyone, I'm Robert (first time in the Jazz/funk section). I have a real good friend whose main thing is Jazz and some Funk as well. He'a 18, plays bass (one of the top players in the whole city), as well as most brass/horn instruments you could think off, and his main idols are Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Charles Mingus, and TheLonius Monk among others.

Now, I have no idea what to get him for Christmas. Could you guys help out? Maybe name some of the best unknown jazz artists so that maybe I could get him a cd of something he hasn't heard before. Instrument stuff maybe, I don't know. Anything is appreciated =]. It'd probably have to be under $30 though, as I have to buy others gifts as well.

Yeah, um, it might be a bit hard to get, i dont know where you live but, um, an album called 'On the edge' by a guy called james morrison is really good and i doubt your friend would have heard it. I could enquire with music stores over here for shipping over there if you cant get a hold of it, it might be a bit of a late chrissie present though... really good instrumental stuff, some of the best jazz/funk musicians in Australia.

Oh and the bassist that plays for this band, he plays a six string bass and is exeptional, i have personally met four of the guys on this cd and are really great.

Hmm how much do you think shipping would cost from Australia to California? What stores/websites do you think I could find it?

Um, im not quite sure how much shipping would be, but look at; www.78records.com.au and search in titles/artists for James Morrison; On the Edge. The cd is worth $30 Australian, so thats... $21.8428 USD. and i dont know what shipping costs would be, you can probably find that out on the 78 records website, there is an order system, so i'd imagine that it would tell you the packing a postage costs there.

I couldn't find it at my local Wherehouse so I just got him the Thelonius Monk/Coltrane colaboration album.

Thats fair enough, it is truly a great album though, if your friend ever wants it, just tell him to get in touch with me or another australian jazz/funk person. The album that you selected is very good aswell.
