Hi, i was just wondering whether anyone knew of some particularly good Miles Davis Cd's? I have heard some of his stuff, but i do not know what to look for. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers:chug:

Well, most people would suggest Kind of Blue, But I prefer Bitches Brew. Birth of Cool Is also pretty nice.

to get an accurate portrait of miles davis as an artist, i would recommend every album he produced. the things he did with jazz over time are mindblowing.

Miles is so diverse....you cant get all of him in just a few Cd's
but here are my suggestions
Kind Of Blue
In A silent Way
Miles Smiles
Tutu
Birth Of The Cool
...hell all of it

even the less heralded albums are themselves complete works of genius. i'll say the essential four though would be
kind of blue
sketches of spain
in a silent way
bitches brew

Kind of Blue and Miles Smiles are my favorites, but to echo everybody else, you need to hear everything to appreciate the man.

I had been wanting a Miles album for so long, and I finally go Kind of Blue yesterday. Great stuff, really chill. I think the next one will be Bitches Brew.

haha i just pictured the initial grimace you'll have for the first five seconds of the album, especially when the trumpet comes in
equally amazing music though. i dont see how anyone could say it blows, unless youre just a really close-minded bop jazz purist or something

And how does it not make YOU an asshole to randomly insult people's taste in music?

It's good that it's different. Variety is always nice, and I know he's a very diverse musician. I wouldn't want my second Miles album to be exactly like the first
Was it one of his "electric" albums that I hear about?

I didn't randomly insult people's taste in music. I said the album sucks, which it does, and there was nothing random about it. Bitches Brew is a meandering mess of jazz musicians using instruments they aren't comfortable with playing a style they aren't comfrotable with. The end result is interesting, but musically blowing. As a "really close-minded bop jazz purist" (what kind of conclusion was that anyways) I shouldn't be liking Jack Johnson, Filles De Kilimanjaro, In A Silent Way, Live-Evil, Dark Magus, and Agharta, should I? But I do, mainly because all of them are much more refined and interesting than Bitches Brew. They actually have musical ideas that are allowed to prosper much more than on Bitches Brew, they have musicians who don't sound so out of place, and has an overall feel that doesn't result in "If you want to hear this, then it'll be good; if not, this album is useless." Of course, those are just fusion albums that Miles did that are head and shoulders beyond Bitches Brew. Just imagine what the others did.

I mean, everybody and their momma knew you don't just come up and talk to Miles Davis. I mean, he may have looked like he was chilling, but he was absorbed. This one hip couple, one of them tried to shake his hand one day. And the guy says, "Hi, my name is..." Miles said, "Get the **** outta my face you jive mother****er, and take your silly bitch with you."

Man, Alot of people like that album, as it has been suggested to me many times since i initially posted this thread. Why dont u like it?

dembonez i retract my statement for the most part, and while i disagree with your view on that particular album, i respect your reasoning behind it.
i dont percieve the instrumentation on bitches brew as awkward jazz players acting clumsily in a new world of electric instruments, but a primary exploration into the fusion sound. and there is definitely a difference in the treatment of the music in this album
(bb) and others (you mentioned filles de kilimanjaro, another favorite of mine) i dont think that bitches brew has any less musical merit, or is a more primitive jazzy "mess" or anything of the sort. miles's albums were referred to as "directions in music" and i think this is important. all of the later miles albums explore music differently, and perhaps the direction bitches brew takes just rubs you the wrong way?

That was probably the best thing of that two hour mess called Collateral.

Everybody chill, and ask yourselves this question. Do you actually care what that random internet dude said??? And my thoughts on Bitches Brew: Miles Runs the Voodoo Down! Come on! It's one of the great bass line albums of all time!

Bitches Brew was an experience for me the first time I listened to it. It's very...different, but at the same time genius.
I prefer Kind of Blue though, I'd definately recommend it. It's a nice introduction into the musical world of Miles Davis.

Yeah would definitely reccomend "Kind of Blue" to newcomers, that or "Birth of the Cool".
I love how all of you know Bitches Brew, but none of you know On the Corner. Check that one out if you like Bitches.

Recommend a Miles Cd?
The man recorded music for nearly 50 years and was constantly evolving and radically changing his styles. He invented a sound on the trumpet that didn't exist until he did it. He invented styles of music that didn't exist until he did it. He was the Commander in Chief of the now fringe style of Jazz Rock Fusion.
I've got everything he released officially since 1958 and dozens of unofficial releases. There are some I personally like a lot more than others, but to try and recommend a few is detrimental to appreciating the complete artist he was and what he contributed to music as we know it.
Bitches Brew is one of those records that you either love or hate. It's not for the timid and many insist it was real crap until Teo Macero used Studio Magic to "fix it up". I love the record because not only were the musicians being asked to play a style that didn't exist until then, they were all good enough to pull it off and follow his direction. Yeah, it's just a bunch of long jams to simple riffs or bass lines, but it grooves and is dripping with style.

The only problem with Birth Of The Cool is that the sound quality is kind of messed up due to it being a late 40's release. As Grant said Porgy Bess is also a great album. I plan on buying Miles Smiles, Round' About Midnight, Milestones, and Miles Ahead soon.

I just completely spaced out while listening to In A Silent Way for like 40 minutes. It was incredible. Great stuff.
My favorite Miles album is Bitches Brew.
Right now I own: Bitches Brew, Sketches of Spain, In a Silent Way, Miles Smiles, Kind of Blue, and a live bootleg, but I need more. Any suggestions on what to get next?

Bitches Brew is very cool indeed. I'm on a whole, pretty new to anything jazz, although I'm not completely uneducated on the subject
