I've been playing for about 8 months, and I thought it was time to learn a good-sounding solo. I read the forums, and saw that many people find the STH-solo very easy but well-sounding. So I decided to learn that one.

The problem is that I find this solo everything but easy. I can't do it fast enough. The only way I can play it is doing it twice as slow. So I wondered if there was some sort of 'trick' that I don't know about which makes it easier for you to play such a solo.

Thanks in advance.

btw : Just to clear things up : I've been practicing alot on it. I've been trying to play it for about a month now (about 15 minutes a day for the solo).

Practice man. Thats what I did. First work with a metronome, start slow, and when u feel comfortable, gradually work yourself up to the normal pace.

Thats what I did, works for me everytime.

15 minutes isn't a long time to play one thing a day if you want to improve IMO, also considering you've only been playing 8 months you're not going to get better at a great rate. At that time, I was playing for 4-8 hours everyday. You just gotta learn the positions, notes, everything perfectly first, then start slow and build up speed just like anyone and everyone will/should tell you. This applies to anything and everything.

MRDuCran : You understood me wrong. I practice way more than 15 minutes a day. But I practice about 15 minutes a day on the solo.

As MRDuCran said, you've gotta start slow and gradually build it up from there.

I would suggest, if you don't have much experience with solos in the first place, to check out the solo list I'm putting together for beginners:
http://www.tdknights.com/trea/songs/solo.htm

Have a go at some of the others first and you'll find you should be able to master a lot of them quicker than this one. Don't feel bad about it. The Stairway solo is for a more advanced beginner/practically leading onto intermediate.

There are also several exercises you can do that will improve various skills you need for soloing, and these will help you in mastering Stairway. Stick at these and you'll find you'll be able to master a lot of solos much easier; http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=308621.

Hope that helps :thumb:.

yeh i been playing about the same time as you, and it took me a while to get the solo down. I practised so i could get all the fingerings and positions in my head, so it was sort of automatic, i didnt have to think.
Break the solo up into sections (7 notes a section, or where there is a noticable break)get the rhythm of one section down, practise it for a few days until you can play along with the song, then move onto another. When you have them all down, then link them together and bobs your uncle.

and remember... Jimmy Page performed that solo... there is no one on this forum who can come close to playing it exactly as he did... solo's are as much about feeling as they are about hitting the notes...

Sadly there is no "trick" however, just keep at it and some day you'll sound close to the real deal.

I specfied that 15 mins isn't a long time for one thing, which is that solo.

Try using the video on this website: http://www.farhat.name/index_ingles.htm click on stairway to heaven. It helped me learn the solo.
