Just out of cuiosity, what are some different variations of tunings for the bass? I know there's the standard EADG, there's DADG, CGCF, DGCF (I think)... Any others?

find michael manrings website. you'll have more altered tunings than you could ever need. be careful trying some of those tho. most of those you won't even be able to do without the special zon basses he uses, but some you can, just becareful of breaking strings, by tightening em too much

Yeah, I've learned the hard way not to tighten the strings too much. I don't ever tune then down too much, or else they sound really sloppy. I've got mine at DGCF now, and most likely won't go any lower, or higher than standard.

I've been using CGCGC on my 5er lately...C-F#-A#-D#-G# is a fun one too...I use EADGC/EADGB and DGCFB as well. I've tried AEADG/AEADF# but it's too loose for my tastes.

Normally I just stick to standard EADG tuning, but I like to downtune to Db-Ab-Db-Gb sometimes. If I downtune to drop C my strings are WAY too floppy... If I cared more I'd buy heavier gauge strings, but I don't, so I won't. ;)

If i want strage tuning, then i usually just make minor changes and slap on a capo. Manring tuning without risking my strings. It works.

Unless you detune first then put the capo on and move it up the fretboard when you want standard tuning.... which would then limit your fretboard space :)

I'd love to get a 5 string and tune it EADGC or (even better but probably more expensive) ADGCF and then play with another bassist tuned BEAD or BEADG.

Where do you get the high F? Do you buy Conklin 7 string sets or are there other places to get a high F?
