View Full Version : Pitchfork's List
It's list of this years top singles is up. Tomorrow it will be the albums.
I think the list is a load of balls. Kelly Clarkson amongst a few other ****e musicians (if you call them that) got top 10. Then again, it is Pitchfork.

"Hope There's Someone" is deserving of the top spot, I think. But I agree that there was a lot of garbage on there.
How did "Feel Good, Inc." miss out?

Excellent, not a single hip-hop, pop, or indie song out of place. Everything is nice and complacent, like flipping through an all-time Rolling Stone list and breathing a sigh of relief when three Beatles songs/albums are among the top ten. For a second there, I was afraid music journalism was going to be as daring as some of the musicians they fawn over, but nobody's turtlenecks are going to be ruffled over a list as predictable as this one.

hey man. to be fair, there's a reason beatles material is always so high.

Hmm... yeah the list is considerably more 'indie'-friendly this year. Not very much mainstream hip-hop/top 40 pop that they usually select. Gettin' soft on us?
I dunno, I doubt their records of the year will be exciting, but here's to hoping. I'm guessing the horrid Clap Your Hands for the top spot. Well, replace 'guessing' with 'dreading' to be more accurate I suppose.

Possibly I Am a Bird Now, for the double gong for Antony.

I was thinking Clap Your Hands too (they're excellent, by the way), then I realized it can't possibly not be Illinois.
Clap Your Hands are decent. Nowhere near the ridiculous hype machine that Pitchfork engineered them into. They have some good things going for them but their sound isn't quite as 'new' 'fresh' or as 'fun' as everyone says. Oh well.
But, I'd agree with Illinois, if CYHSY isn't selected, it would be dropped down to Sufjan. Actually - now seeing how Antony did on the top 50 singles, he'll probably get some pretty decent placement. I'm just hoping Archer Prewitt's Wilderness gets some ****ing love somewhere at this end of the year madness.
asymm
12-19-2005, 12:43 AM
Wow yeah, I totally forgot about Archer. Of the two Wildernesses though, I prefer the one by the actual band.
Yeah, both are great. Archer Prewitt's getting snubbed since it's been almost a year (11 months) since his record was released. I still think it's as solid as anything else from this year though.

I think that "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" is a pretty solid song deserving of a spot. However, as they self-distribute, it's not surprising that its neglected. Archer Prewitt has a lot of good songs, but none of them really seem like singles. Maybee "Chicago" by Sufjan as it is his most approachable.

Well, what would you have chosen? Godsmack? Alien Ant Farm?
I don't even think those bands exist anymore. At least I hope not.
But that's not the point. These people's tastes in music are so BORING. Not the songs they listen to, but what they find acceptable is so easy to categorize. And this doesn't have anything to do with TMV either because I'll accept almost any reason for not liking that band, even when an outcry against their pretentious style is a pretty obvious contradiction to Pitchfork's prose itself.

'Glosoli' wasn't even on the list. What a ****ing joke.

12-19-2005, 01:34 AM
That'd be nice. I wanted to call that my #1 of the year, but as Questionable Content so accurately put it, it's impossible not to put Illinois at #1, even if you like other albums more.
That's one of the most blatantly ignorant, stupid and frustrating things I've ever read.
Why the **** should I put it as my number one if I (in all honesty) prefer the Kelly Clarkson record? or Weezers latest?
Because you ****en hipster's fawn all over him/it? I don't understand anything about the hype about this guy. To be fair, I doubt he stfu himself digs all this brown-nosing.
Seriously, ****.

12-19-2005, 01:40 AM
You like other albums better, but because of the stigma that comes with disliking the album or liking other's more, you won't put them as your number 1?
If i don't like it, then I'm not going to give into it's "rule" factor.
Illinoise is boring and qc isn't really funny.

Sufjan's record is good...but the Calexico/Iron & Wine's "In The Reigns" is way superior in my opinion.
Is it me or is anything that involves Calexico pure gold?

12-19-2005, 02:26 AM
I don't think it's just you Orb.
Illinois is a nice record, but there's no way it's better than a 3.5/5. I can't understand at all people who say that all of the filler fits in perfectly. Even if it does fit in, it's still boring ****, so how can you rate the album 5/5?
That QC thing is bull**** too. It took me months of painful listening before I could even start to enjoy Illinois. It has some incredible songs, but it blows my mind that people can actually think it's perfect as an album.
Tomahawk
12-19-2005, 04:42 AM
Ok, I've only heard 5 of the top 10 songs. So... am I out of touch, or are they just cunts?
Misinterpreted. If I may quote QC:
"Confession time: I really didn't want to give this record the top spot. Honestly, something about Sufjan annoys the hell out of me. Maybe it's his earnestness. Maybe it's the ridiculously-long song titles (the thought of a Sufjan/Minus the Bear split CD is terrifying) or just how smug this album is. It knows it's a ****ing incredible record. It's fully aware that each song sucks you in and holds your complete attention before finally letting go, only to trap you with yet another beautifully crafted pop gem. Maybe it's that the album is perfect- there's not a single thing I hear, upon listening, that I'd change were I behind the mixing console. It's flawless."
Illinois is my favourite album of the year, but no way is it that good.
Daft Punk Is Playing At My House should have been Top 10. As should Gold Digger.
And what the hell is Madonna doing in there? That's her worst single in years. Well, if you ignore American Life, anyway.
Trapped In The Closet needs to be 8 places higher.
Edit: "Hounds Of Love" in the Top 10? Ouch.

I think The Decemberists should be pretty near the top. That was just about my favourite album of the year.
Illinois is good but Jeph's going a bit hyperbolic in that description. He's making it sound like it's Blonde on Blonde or Sgt. Pepper or something. Maybe I wouldn't change anything behind the mixing desk but good production does not an album make. Some of the tracks just weren't very good.

I agree on both points; considering how Pitchfork tends to fawn over The Decemberists, it's a wonder that none of their singles were on the list. Then again, the singles list isn't full of literate music, anyway, so oh well. They'll place in the top albums, no doubt, or I'll have tea with Colin and morrissey and make it all better. The other bandmates will be free to watch.
Sorry, Nacho, but Sufjan's album isn't 100% pure love. I had it for a while, and it got old. I think pixiesfanyo said that Come on, Feel the Illinoise was this year's Funeral in that it was the huge indie hype machine that eventually wore itself out. It's still full of good tunes and is a worthy purchase, but let's be honest: it's not better than that amazing Every Time I Die album, and pales in comparison to the Britney Spears remix album. Seriously, though, nobody with a brain listens to either of those. Sufjan's a good man and made a durn fine album, but is it the best in show?
We're all missing the REAL point, though. DVDA's "Now You're A Man" is the greatest single in the history of music.

Yeah, both Picaresque and Illinoise seem to have garnered lots of initial reactions just like Source Tags & Codes and Funeral but they lose their replayability. They are both solid albums, but eventually you find yourself really just picking out the good tracks and skipping the rest two months after the initial shock. There are numerous more albums that are acutally solid straight through that should be way higher than The Decemberists and Sufjan.

I think Calexico are the worst band ever, but I like Ricky Martin so whatever.
The list is typical. A mix of the major indie stuff, a bunch of hip/hop stuff you know and don't know and a few acceptable crossover pop hits which the indie press fawn over from time to time, e.g. Ms. Clarkson. The latter is a major single though, one of the best I've heard in a long time.
I don't get it. I thought Pitchfork was supoposed to be all indie-fied.

Ah, well. I'm betting that Illinois is going to be the number one album tomorrow, like every other indie review site, basically. I remember liking the album a bunch the first few times I listened to it...but the more people went gaga over how perfect it is, the less of the perfection I hear. Kelly Clarkson, though, definitely deserved that number 4 spot.

I don't agree with The Decemberists wearing off after a few listens. I think it's a darn solid album, moreso than their past two, and a little better than the Tain E.P.
