View Full Version : Amazing how many people are fooled by gold!!!

A word of advise, Don't be fooled by gold plated cables, cable ends or electronics.

While it's true that gold plating conducts electricity a little bit better than brass or other materials, they key words are "a little bit". They don't conduct that much better.

Think about this, the gold plating must be plated on something. So, whether it's plated on brass, nickel, or whatever, the electricity still has to travel through the base metal before it hits the cable.

True, gold doesn't tarnish as much, but the plating can wear off, then what do you have? A regular unplated piece.

Actually, the BEST conductor of electricity is Silver. That's right it's even better than gold. Oh yea, it costs less also.

Plated. If they were real gold, even 5 karat, they would cost much more. They would also be softer.

Gold is a soft metal, which is why it's mixed with other metals. This way it can be harder.

It's one of the first things we learned in electronics school. The instructors even brought in articles that stated it was a marketing gimmic.

The only advantage it has over a few other metals is that it doesn't tarnish quickly. There are other less expensive metals that don't tarnish and actually have better conductivity.

Cu comes from the latin word for copper, just as Fe comes from Ferrum.

On a different note, according to this link (http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/audioprinciples/interconnects/silveraudiocables.php), silver isn't much better than copper either. So there seems to be no big reason to use any other material than copper, ever.

i always thought the ends of the cable were gold plated to prevent corrosion around the contact between the cable and the amp/guitar. corrosion ruins conductivity and so they are gold plated because of this, the cable inside is still copper because it conducts electricity better/the best? but the gold is there just to keep oxides of the metals away from the point of contacts?

yeah but silver tarnishes unbelievably easily, which makes it unpractical for connections

gold is the least reactive metal and in pure form will not oxidise, ie. no corrosion. during WWII a nobel prize winning chemist put his gold nobel medal into acid, dissolving it, in fear that it would be taken by the nazis. post war he returned to his lab finding the jar intact he reversed the chemical process, regaining the gold unblemished and sent it back to have his medal recast with the original gold. that is kinda unrelated but cool and proves the unreactive nature of gold and the inginuity(sp?) of scientists

1 - Using Gold connectors improves the quality of the sound because it reduces the loss and slight distortion/colouration of the sound which occurs at the connections.

2- like you said it doesn't tarnish as much... therefore the connections stay cleaner and the sound travels through better..... the inside of a cable cant tarnish or oxidise because its not exposed to the air... unlike the connections which are exposed to air, water, a bit of everything really.

So yeah they cost more - but for studio applications that little bit of increased conductivity is worth it, and the connectors on any cable will stay sounding new for longer. They do use it for a reason someone didnt just make it up as a marketing gimmick

anyway the cost of gold plated connectors is hardly anything compared to regular steel, copper or whatever they feel like making it out of
