So, I feel the need to express my unadultered joy at my recent purchase(though noone probably cares): A GK 2001 RBP Preamp. This is the first of my new rig, which should be completed by the end of the week. That preamp is going to be going through a QSC RMX 850 power amp, pushing a cabinet that I haven't decided on quite yet(Final decision is probably gonna come on wednesday.) But I'm thinking either SWR, GK, or Avatar, though I'm reluctant to go Avatar since there are none nearby to try out.

Sounds like a solid set-up so far. What kind of tone are you looking for?

nice choices for your rig, and regarding Avatar, just read the specs on the website for each different cab. I ordered one without trying it first (not wise), but I read many reviews and researched them enough to convince myself to get one. I can say that for the price (170 bucks), there is no better choice for a medium range bass cab.

I like a really versatile tone, but in most cases I like it to be bright and clear, with a good, solid, and clean slap tone. But I also like to be able to grind it a bit and also get a big, fat fingerstyle tone. I know the GK isn't amazing in the warmth department, but I think I like the tone enough to survive without that little bottom edge.
I don't remember the exact models, but I THINK the GK I was playing was a 410SBX, and the SWR a Golaith III. Any other cabs I should go out of my way to look for?

the goliath III is great... i got mine for $400 :thumb: great deal IMO... 4 ohm version.....
i think the GK preamp would be a nice clash with the SWR... i'd like a gk head instead of my ampeg...

Where'd you get the GK preamp? I've been googling for it, since I want to be ready to find this stuff when I get the cash to get a "pro" rig, but I can't find any sites to order one from? Unless you went down to your local music store or something

I got it from https://www.rmcaudio.com/.
They aren't stocked very many places, I'm not entirely sure why. These guys you have to email to get a quote, but they responded to me in about 10 minutes(On a sunday morning).
And I think I'm gonna try to find an SWR for that price, I saw one recently, but I think it's gone now, and that's about the top of my price limit for the cab(400)

Aww... if your budget was higher you could get an Epifani. That's a clean versitle tone for you...

Heh I'm kinda hijacking this thread, but if I was to get the 2001RBP and a QSC RMX850, and a Gollaith III 4ohm, it'd only be 300W, right? How do you run bridged mono mode?

How do you run bridged mono? You plug your cab(s) into channel 1 only, and push the switch on the back of the power amp to bridged mono mode. If you're running a 4 ohm load you'll get a PMPO of 830 watts.

So, I have my rig now. Sorta. I have one more question:
I have the GK 2001RBP preamp, and QSC RMX 850 power amp, like I said. I ended up with a GK 410 cab I got used from Sam Ash.
It works fine, and gets pretty loud, dosen't sound bad either. But, if I put my power amp voulme more than 10 oclock or, so, it clips and starts farting. And, if I put the power amp in bridged mono at all, I get constant clipping/farting. At the moment, the cabinet is as loud as I need it to be, but that might change eventually. So, would my best choice be to keep the cab or take it back and get something that can take more power(I can take it back for 30 days if unhappy).

I mean, the speakers stop making a distinct tone and vibrate wildly/rattle/make a "farting" ish noise.

Maybe the speakers are loose?

Hey, I just recently bought the QSC RMX 1450 power amp to go along with a Tech 21 RBI preamp. Whatever you choose as your cab is deffinetely going shake your ballz off. I use an Ampeg 610 cab, and it is crazy !!
Also, to run in bridged mono mode, depending on what power amp you have, you can flick switches on the back of the amp. On the QSC RMX series, there are switches on the back to make the change from stereo to bridged mono.
You may need to go back and find another cabinet that can handle the bridged wattage you are sending to the speakers.

how many watts is the cab, and at what volume does this happen at and with what notes (low or high)

The guy said the cab is rated around 400 watts, and it happens always when running bridged mono, and when not, and with the voulme turned to more than 10 oclock, it happens mostly on the low notes, but if I dig in on the high notes, it happens too.
I know my amp is more powerful than the cab can take, and I think I have decided to get a cab that can take the power that I'm giving it.
EDIT: TO keep all my questions to one thread, I'm thinking about getting an SWR Golaith II used. How's it compare to the III, and is there anywhere I can get specs online?

you are giving it too much power, don't do that if you are running bridged mono. you will blow stuff. only go to about number 3 on the volume. also it is better to have a more "powerful" cab than head

Thanks, that's what I thought.
And, to continue my string of stupid questions, Is there any other output for the power amp other than the DI out? I am right now plugging the DI into my power amp, but it seems like if I played live it would be impossible to DI to the PA and run a cab on stage for stage voume. There's a chain out, that's a 1/4 in jack, but in the manual it says that's for daisy chaining preamps together. Anything I'm missing?
