I have heard many different tales of a correct buzz roll...no I am not reffering to a press roll. Can anyone explain to me how to do a correct buzz roll or is their a site that does? Is it just double stroke rolls really done fast or is their a different technique invloved? I've been trying this for a year now and getting nowehere and I really need some help!
PS...the reason why this is NOT in the beginner section is because I just tried posting it and all of the posts are ending up in the bass section!

Or, ask Double Bass Jim. He has a sick buzz roll.

Unless I'm doing it wrong, when I do a buzz roll, I just do doubles just above the head and let the sticks bounce.
Makes a buzz to me.

for a buzz don't you just more or less press your stick into the head allowing it to almost vibrate against the skin?
My teacher told me doubles have to be distinct doubles and that playing those two things differently is very important

Yeah, I just hold my stick 1/2"-3/4" above the skin and let it drop. Repeat every .5 seconds with other stick to get a buzzing sound. You can do it louder, but then you're forcing your stick to stay on the snare, and that's not really a good thing to do.

When doing buzz rolls like that I can do them but I have to hold my sticks in a palm down, thumb and forefinger pressing the stick down, hands either side of the snare.
Just wondering if anyone else does this.

Start by being able to play 3,4, or 5 notes off a single stroke. Just like developing any roll, you must start very slow and work up to speed.
Pressing the sticks into the head (a seperate tehcnique called a press roll), simply dropping them or any other randomness is goign to be just that.
Random, sloppy.
A great buzz roll is just like a double stroke roll, except you are using 3 or more notes per stroke, it is controlled and has the player knows exactly what each stick is doing and has control over each stick at all times.
