Is 90 percent of all old Metallica songs (pre-black album) done downpicking?

Question!

I think so, I heard Hetfield was quite well known for his down-picking.

yes, but then so is the stuff after black and including black as well.

Mostly. Doesn't mean you have to play them downpicked. And don't go thinking Whiplash was downpicked.

Hetfield (rhythm) downpicks almost all the time. Hammet's solos / lead lines can be alternate picked.

No way!

All these would prove impossible to purely downpickk:

Hit the Lights
Motorbreath
Whiplash
No Remorse
Metal Militia
Fight Fire with Fire
Ride the Lightning
Battery
Disposable Heroes
Leper Messiah
Damage Inc.
Blackened
Eye of the Beholder
One
Dyers Eve.

15/34 = 44%, 60% would be possible to downpick but some of it wasn't, like random gallops in slower songs or just stuff on different strings such as, Fade to Black interlude, One intro, Jump in the Fire main riff, Leper Messiah chorus. All those would be possible with some years of training but it'd be more convenient to alt pick some little parts.

Yeah but you get some stupid people who think Hetfield's hand can move a 1000mph. I know I said it was mostly downpicked but I didn't analyse it like you did.

lol how can u downpick tremelo picking?

MRDuCran

It's not tremelo picking. Tremelo picking could be defined as picking as fast as possible whilst playing a set figure with the left hand. Whiplash, for example, uses very controlled 16th notes.

As I said, there's parts in Blackened that cannot because of the nature of them.

Also, see the 2nd half of Leper Messiah, 16ths notes at 184.

Ill quote Hammett from Guitar World..."Everything is always downpicked for us, unless its physically impossible."
