It seems everyone I know holds their pick one way different to another.But recently I talked to two classically trained guitar players that were VERY cocky and they said that their was is the best way which allows you to use full motion of your wrist.I have been going through many grips and when I play on a acoustic my pick always slips even if I just play simple chords for a few seconds.Do I need a firmer grip? Is their 100 different grips? The two guitar players made it sound like their was only one way that they teach all of their students.....they hold the pick between the side of their index finger and their thumb but the index finger takes up a good portion of their pick.I tried it and it sucks for doing metal and it sound very very weak....I have been trying to get used to it for 3 months and it sounds pathetic.I have no power and I can't play chords as fast.Any advice? I am getting very frustrated that those 2 guitar players EVER showed me this stuff in the first place!

I used to be like that. Dont worry, just hold the pick in any way that's comfortable for you.
And about the dropping the pick, you're fingers just aren't used to holding it yet, you'll get used to it, and wont ever drop it soon enough.

Wait...
Classical players...
using picks?

I don't use a pick myself but I remember an article on this a while back. I'll see if I can find it but I'm not promising anything coz I dunno if it's still around.

Yeah side of index finger and thumb is pretty much the standard way to hold it and gives you great control and speed when you're used to it.

It takes quite some time to get used to it if you've been playing using a different method.
