Hi

I was wondering if u have any tips for how to prevent u from accidentally playing open notes while play fast licks without picking?

Like on David Lee Roth - Shyboy how does steve vai manage to play it really fast without accidentally hitting other strings?

Does it come with speed, accuracy and technique with constant hammering on and off?

or is it to do with muting with ur picking hand?

I had a go at it..

Practice makes perfect. Examine your technique closely. If you've gotten into bad habits you should be able to tell by the fact that your hands are uncomfortable or it's awkward to play certain things. Your hands shouldn't be too strained, and should be as loose as possible while still maintaining good definition when picking (this will come with time). If it hurts to move your plectrum - it's likely that you're either pushing yourself too far too fast, or you're doing something wrong.

Basically, the only person who can teach you is yourself - it's all about personal preference and comfort - nobody else has your hands, so we can't really tell you any real 'tried and true' methods - we can only offer personal advice.

Vai does a lot of palm muting of the bass strings, and dampening with his left hand index finger for the treble strings. He does this with his left hand often.

Just take off the strings you don't wanna play.

i usually finger mute strings that i might accidentally hit, like when im switching chords and i might accidentally hit a string, i just mute it until im situated. You cant really hear it, and its good for practice. The more i play a particular song, the less i need to do it so it is more of one of those crutches to keep you going.
