View Full Version : Oats?

People always say stuff around here like "you need to eat more oats" and I was wondering if they really do help increase energy or if this is just a figure of speech. If its true though, would the Quaker Oat Squares cereal be a good source of oats?

Oats dont really increase energy at all, the only reason you eat them is if your a bodybuilder, they provide a necessary amount of "good" carbs....god some people are idiots

did you know when dogs are really excited and they start panting, they're actually laughing from being so overjoyed?

and for future reference, they probably have oats' nutrition facts on google if you look. which you probably didn't.

no they're no super energy meal like those redbulls or anything but they're a slow digesting carb that will keep you full for a decent amount of time assuming you eat at least a full cup or two. Any food will provide you with energy so yes they'll give you energy but no 'burst' or 'rush' that'd you'd expect with large amounts of caffeine or those power bars...

point of this being in drum forum----> I have no idea

No. You should get energy from grains and proteins.

The only reason you should ever have sugar or caffeine is... well... there is none.

After the initial rush, your system crashes and you get tired. Even if it isn't very much, you do. If you want energy, have a couple rice cakes with peanut butter on em. Nutritious, low in carbs/calories (as long as you don't go insane with the p. butter), and will give you plenty of energy to spare.

Honestly, my dad lives off of those things.

any carbs give you energy but there is gonna be no "boost" or "rush", the only reason to eat oats is if your a bodybuilder and your trying to get your amount of carbs in for the day without it all turning to sugar

OATS = Complex carbohydrates & lo glicemic index which mean they have alott of energy and release it through a long period of time.

so yes oats will give you energy and endurance. :thumb:

That's totally untrue. Not only that, but you've contridicted yourself many times now. Not to mention, unused calories by the body do not turn to sugar. It turns to fat. People get fat deposits, not sugar deposits. Perhaps in the land of willy wonka?

WhiteRiot nailed it, I'll expand a lil..

Quality Oats provide one of the best sources of clean, long lasting energy for a human body. Active humans need energy, oats are an excellent source of energy, therefore for active humans, eating oats is an excellent thing.

Oats will have a positive effect on a persons drumming. There is no doubt about that. Having more, longer lasting, cleaner energy for a drummer is a key thing. Drums are very physical. As you get tired form playing, your mind becomes slower as energy levels are depleted. In order to maintain a clear thought process and play drums in a musical environment for extended periods of time, or even simply so you are not just wasted afterwards. Ya gotta have energy, Oats is a great source. As is brown rice.
Diets rich in complex carbs have been praised by both musicians and sports figures alike. Wayne gretzky talked about eating a heavy complex carb meal an hour before every game. There have been numerous articles in drummer mag's talking about how important diet is, esspeccially on the road. Not to mention countless drummers that have mentioned the importance of these things in interviews.

Scientific studies have shown a positive corrilation between healthy people and successful people.

I've personally had numerous students comment on how their diet's affected their studies in a very positive way. Having more energy to practice, more often and being generally happier with themselves because of the improved learning curve that comes with that.

Think of it like this -

You can buy a redbull for $2.25, wich will give you energy, a kind of fake kind, with a rather nasty drop at the end. Not to mention, it's really not that good for you.

Or in the same amount of time it takes to drink that can. You can for around 5 cents have a 1/2 cup of oats. Wich will provide even more energy, longer lasting, without the drop at the end AND is good for you.

Not a very hard choice for me.

Honestly, it's Joey's secret for going fast... and I bet Peart downs at least 6 bowls/day...

There's no doubt diet has a massive effect on drumming.

Considering most peoples diets are friggin horrible, I'm sure adding something healthy like oats in couldn't help.

I notice a lot of people laughing. Funny thing is, odds are greatly most of you are not very healthy and will grow up to be even worse.

Dunno if anyones looked around lately.. but the majority of people are not doing so well in the diet department. The top 3 killers of humans are all related to diet... or having a bad diet I should say.

crazyguy832
12-19-2005, 02:59 PM
It's so true, Josiah...

Half a year or so ago I realized how total crap my diet was and I've been changing it. More fruits, better carbs (12 grain or whole weat instead of white), better meat (less steaks, more fish and poultry), less junk food. It really isn't that hard and you'll end up with a longer life, more energy, a healthier life, and more.

Josiah
12-19-2005, 03:01 PM
Very true.. diet is prob the biggest factors for humans.

Put crummy gas in a car, it'll run bad and not last very long.

Put good gas in a car, it'll run better and last longer.

Humans are the same, just far more comlicated and the effects are far more noticable.

I'd rather eat brown rice or wheat bread myself instead of oats. Not a big fan of the flavor. I generally have a baked potato 45 mins or so before a show. Makes a big difference.
