No, plugining your headphones into THE ACTUCAL BASS will give you nothing, try the headphine jack in your amp.

Some travel basses have built-in headphone amps that allow you to do this.

Can't you do that with active basses though?

Thats incorrect. If I DI into my RBX775 I can hear it, albeit fairly quiet. Passive basses are next to silent however.

you can with an active bass as bleeding fingers pointed out.......however the sound comes out very very faintly and you chew the battery.

i was looking at trying to built a small amp that would be sufficient for just the headphones themsleves but gave up on it as i do not need it.

They sell tiny little amps that you plug into the input and then you plug your headphones into those.

I use a Behringer V-Amp to boost the signal into headphones. I don't actually have a bass amp.

I was thinking maybe a pedal (of any sort?) could amplify the sound. I don't have my bass here :( so therefore I can't try it myself..

^^right ignore most of those posts.

Its possible IF...

1- the basses output is high/loud enough - my status works really well straight into headphones - but it is a very loud bass.

2- the headphones are suited for it - the ones i use are designed for studio monitoring (got them cheap as ex-demo units)... so they have a pretty flat frequency response and can handle the lows ok.... most you'll get a distortion with the lows and they'll colour the sound a lot.

On a low output bass - you can use a number of amplifiers into the headphones.... a pedal might work, a preamp, DI unit, etc, etc... anything with an amplifying circuit built it.

a cheap outboard preamp and a reasonably decent pair of headphones would work just fine with most basses though.

Ah alright thanks for the write out... but i guess i still need an amp though...

you can with some adapters but its not going to be amplified at all. get a mini pre amp. if you want to do that. or just use your amp and crank it:thumb:

I have a question.

Why didn't you just try plugging some headphones in at low volume and try it out?

mmm get another £20/30 and have a look into AKG and Sennheisers monitoring range....around 75 is the cheapest your gonna get which will handle the bass well enough to be used for any decent monitoring.... plus believe my that extra bit is worth it - they will last SO much longer
