Well, first of all I'm not actually a full-time drummer, I'm a guitar player first, drummer second, hence me rarely venturing into these parts. That doesn't mean, however, that I am a complete drum n00b, and after seeing Vergil playing on Steve Vai's DVD "Live at the Astoria" I was quite literally blown away. So I decided to get tickets to this gig.

It was a small gig at a really small venue (the crowd was about 150 or so people). The stage was pretty small...Vergil's kit took up centre stage, leaving only standing room for the bass player (Rufus Philpot) and keyboard player (Mitchel Forman).

So the gig...was totally amazing. Not being a huge Planet X fan, just watching Vergil's drumming kept me interested the whole way through. Rufus' bass solos were astounding, and the keyboard work was fantastic too. There was a lot of indicating to the techies to adjust some volumes during the show though, and a monitor had to be replaced at the interval, but aside from that it went well, I thought. The set was about 2 hours in total (with an interval and a late start...I'm only approximating since I didn't check what the actual start and finishing times were :p) and afterwards Vergil and the guys came out for signings and stuff...because of the tiny crowd, there wasn't much of a queue at all, so I bought a Ring Of Fire CD and got it signed.

So Vergil is amazing. I'm still just going "wow" when I think back to that drum solo...

that sounds like it would have been fun, I saw Jack DeJohnette and his Latin Project when I went down to Duke for a basketball game, it was great, again it was a small venue
