View Full Version : 4 Track Recording...?
Ive been looking into just doing a 4-track demo with a couple mates of mine and im just wondering what i would need to buy and how it would work coz im pretty n00b to this whole recording thing. Ive been looking into a couple 4 track recorders or should i get some sort of program.
And if we do it in parts how do we get it on to a single track.
Thanks for any advice you can give.:thumb:

If you do it in parts, get audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net , its free. Then it lets you mixdown to stereo mp3, ogg or aiff.

You'll also need a small mixer or two.
Drums into a mixer, into channel one. Bass into channel two. Guitar mic into channel three. Vocals (if more than one) into a mixer and channel four.

Drums on 1 tape input? If you are recording drums with a mixer, which implies you are using more than 1 mic, you will use up 2 tracks.

Ill probably just use one mic(on drums) seeming as im not really looking for something pro or whatever just something to look back to.
So would i still need a mixer?

Not if you have 1 mic on drums and not more than three more instruments (eg 1 guitar, bass, vocals)
So if i have a mixer i can put a mic into each of the channels (drums, guitar, bass, vocals)? does the mixer go straight into the computer? and we just save it on in parts, then open them up on Audacity, then master it and stuff?
Thanks a lot for your help so far.

A mixer takes as many mics as you want (depending how big a mixer it is) and combines em into a stereo (2 track) output. Audacity can record unlimited tracks on top of each other, while with a 4-track you simply have those 4.
Okay i understand now so all i have to buy is a mixer and a microphone and everything will work and i can do like a 6 track demo or whatever instead of just a 4track.
Okay thanks for the help!:thumb: :chug:
