an easy way to extend the Major Scale is to realize that Major and Minor are in the same Key, C Major and A Minor Scales are both in the key of C, you can combine the Major and Minor Scale and extend the notes on the fretboard, this relationship works in all keys, E Minor is G Major, A Minor is C Major

Here's an open-ended way of learning your major scale patterns (which isn't to nullify the previous once cited in this thread...for they are very good as well).

Try to think of three fingerings for major:

• = root
• = 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th

A MAJOR
pattern 1:
┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┐

┌───────────────────────────────┐
├───────────────────────────────┤
├───────────────────────────────┤
├─────────────6─7───────────────┤
├───────5─7─9───────────────────┤
└──5─7─9────────────────────────┘

pattern 2:
┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┐
├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤
├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤
├───┼─•─┼───┼─•─┼─•─┼───┼───┤
├───┼─•─┼─•─┼───┼─•─┼───┼───┤
└───┴───┴─•─┴───┴─•─┴───┴───┘

┌───────────────────────────────┐
├───────────────────────────────┤
├───────────────────────────────┤
├────────────4─6─7──────────────┤
├──────4─5─7────────────────────┤
└──5─7──────────────────────────┘

pattern 3:
┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┐
├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤
├───┼─•─┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤
├───┼─•─┼───┼─•─┼───┼─•─┼───┤
├───┼─•─┼───┼─•─┼─•─┼───┼───┤
└───┴───┴───┴───┴─•─┴───┴───┘

┌───────────────────────────────┐
├───────────────────────────────┤
├────────────────2──────────────┤
├──────────2─4─6────────────────┤
├────2─4─5──────────────────────┤
└──5────────────────────────────┘

First, notice:
pattern 1 starts on the index finger, and ends on the middle
pattern 2 starts on the middle, and ends on the pinky
pattern 3 starts on the pinky, and ends on the indexThen, the pattern starts all over again. Each one runs into the next as you work your way up the neck, and across the strings. If you start with pattern 2, then next octave begins with pattern 3 and so on.

This is sort of an "out-of-the-box" style of seeing major scale patterns on the neck.

Some people find it helpful.

I suggest combining this approach with the "CAGED" box-style method as well.
