How much and what do you guys know about the microphones Shure SM58 and the Shure beta87A? Are they self-powered? Phantom powered?
A more lamens term description of them would be nice, I'm not very good at technical stuff these days as I've been away from the scene for some time.
Another thing.. If anyone owns a Line6 Toneport UX1 will any of these mics work with it? As I'm having quite a few problems with them..

All ino is SM58 is self powered.. Its a Vocal mic. And is considered the industry standard....In other words its a good mic.

The SM58 is an extremely popular vocal stage microphone, although it performs well on other insturments as well. Its dynamic, so it will not need power.
The Beta87 is a stage vocal mic, but it is a condenser (electret). This means it is much more sensitive and is more likely to feedback and pick up spill, but will render a much more detailed, open and natural performance than a dynamic. It is phantom powered.
Both mics are good, although the SM58 is obviously cheaper. The 58 will work with the UX1, while beta87 will NOT because you cannot provide phantom power through a UX1

Hehe, had concluded that the minute you mentioned phantom powered. :p
Now my trouble is.. Why wont the 58 work with my Toneport? It's quite peculiar.. It just makes a lot of noise and clicks.

Make sure you plugged it into the XLR (3pin) socket. Then make sure all your gain and volume settings on the device and in the software are set correctly.

It is - and I've tried all sorts of settings for gain and volume.

I'm thinking its something between the toneport and computer. However you need to check the microphone itself is not faulty. Plug it into a guitar amp with a XLR to jack lead just to check if it works. If that doesen't work, the microphone's bust. If it does work, then either the lead or something between the toneport and computer isn't working.

Unfortunatly I don't have a XLR/Jack - but I am pretty damn sure it's not the microphone that's bust.

Find another way to test the mic so you can be sure, but yeah, the chances of the mic being out are very low.

Hm.. I could bring the mic along with me tomorrow, got a music course, so I can test it in the mixer there and return back with some info. :p
And yea, the SM58 can take one hell of a beating, but might aswell have it checked..
I'm waiting for response from Line 6 on the issue.. See what they have to say.

Have you tried recording guitar through the toneport, to see if it works?

Guitar has always worked fine.. :p
But there isn't a problem any longer, 'cause I discovered the problem. :D
It was the cabel! The cabel was brand new, but I had it and the mic checked at my music course and figured it was the cabel.. I returned the cabel and got me a brand new one (again).. But it works now. :D
