Im a noob and been playing tabs but now im starting to teach myself real musical notation. I do not know how to explain my problem but ill try..

I am learning a song called everlong by foo fighters

the first notes played is
(guitar in drop D tuning..these are the last two strings)
A|-9
D|-0

i know how to play it but reading it in musical notation it says play lower D and F Sharp (which is correct)
But i wonder, why cant you play it like this:

D|-4
A|--
D|-0

Is there any indication where to play the notes up or down the guitar neck?

If anyone can answer this for me it'll b appreciated alot
thx!

That, I think, is why a lot of people run away and hide from notation.

Both forms you notated are correct. It's up to you which you play. If one form is going to be easier in a certain context (due to the other notes being played at the same time as it, as well as the ones played before it and the ones following it), that's the form you'll use. It's just something you get used to over time, and you'll get a lot quicker at making decisions on which position to use with practise.

This is one thing that makes notation reading harder on guitar than it is on other instruments like piano/clarinet. You need to look at what you will be playing further on in the tune and see which note and finger choice will be more beneficial.

Trombone actually has alternate positions too.
But yeah, let's pretend you meant to say clarinet or something.
