View Full Version : The "show your jazz bass" thread...
Just curious to see how many other Jazz bass owners there are lurking around...and any upgrades/customization they may have done.
Here is mine:
Standard jazz in sunburst, I ditched the stock white pickguard in favor of a '62 re-issue tort pickguard...for more of a 'vintage' vibe. Eventually I want to swap in seymour duncans and upgrade the bridge.

pickguard (not sure which colour yet)
bridge (if it keeps giving me trouble)
better tuners w/ hipshot d tuner
possibly a j retro.
and chrome pots.
of course this is when i have the money. which will be a while.

@The Brad
Well it opened up my bass, really. The feel and construction, neck and all other physical features were perfect, it was just that stock preamp that kinda killed the potential it could have. I brought it to a guitar builder here in munich (great guy) and he enlarged my battery cavity so i could fit two 8v in, and the result was just soooooo good. I felt limited with the old preamp, i didnt find the treble to have any major effect on my sound, the bass was ok, but it all seemed...unnatural and cranky, so i kept it passive most of the time.
Now i can actually make alot of use of the tonal variety, the treble is refined and crisp, the bass is woofy (i keep the treble flat and turn bass up 1/4, solo bridge and i get a really funky growly fingersound...its amazing, i couldnt get that before) and i dont even need to turn them very high to get really different tones out of it...i love it, it made the bass so much more versatile.

Alright, well thanks a lot. I'm still not sure I'd swap it out if I buy one, I liked to tone I was getting from it just messing around in the store, but that wasn't a really in-depth experience so you never know I may go the same route if I ever purchase a Miller. I was thinking about putting the OBP-3 in my Fernandes bass, can't decide though. :confused:

I wouldn't say that.
With those big humbuckers on G&L's I would expect them to be dead quiet, but every single one I've owned (8) and played (over 30) have always hummed when the on board electronics were turned on.
My jazzes hum less than every G&L I've ever played.
I wouldn't say that.

Well seeing as you seem to have played so many I will trust your judgement. I based mine on the fact that the one G&L i've played in my life seemed a much more pleasant experience than the two different jazz basses i've played. I also prefer the look of the G&L. But as I have not much experience with either bass, I cannot, and probably should not, really comment on either.

What does that do?
it changes the pickups from parallel to series.. like the S-1 switch n the american jazzes.. gives a hotter ouput, more mids and more bass.. kinda like a precision bass..

This one stays quiet till you turn the trebble all the way up and then kick in the active with trebble boost, but even then it's not as terrible as most people seem to talk about. Otherwise she's very quiet, even with it in active mode. I really never have the noise problem though, because for the most part, I never take her out of passive mode. She's hot enough in passive for me as it is, and I'm more of a "thud" kind of player, with flatwounds strung up on her and the neck pickup engaged 90% of the time. :)

I wish I knew. They feel nice and soft, and have grey silk on the ends. They came with the bass so i don't know for sure.
Does anyone know what manufacturers use grey silk?

Jazz refers to the pickup shape. MXtabs is gone.

This seems like the right place to ask this.... Which is better, MIM or MIJ? I haven't gotten a real answer and was wondering:)

Crafted in Japan, for sure. They have a better work ethic and it shows. They 80's Japanese Fenders beat out American Fenders too.

IMO, Made In Japan. Having owned both, I can say for a fact that I enjoy playing (and owning) MIJ fenders more than MIM

Havent seen anyone else with one of these so i thought i'd show u guys... Its the japanese version of the aerodyne jazz bass. Its got jazz and precision pickups so its pretty versatile, also a tad lighter than other jazz's... just as solid though. I fell in love with it as soon as i saw it... i love the colour and the matching headstock... i also love the silver writing on the headstock. The neck is slim and its lovely to play.

I wouldn't say that because it's not based on any real facts, just an opinion.
As far as quality and craftsmanship, the American and Japanese Fenders are about equal. The differences between the 2 are that the Japanese ones are based on reissues and certain signature models. Plus, the American ones have a few things that the Japanese ones don't have like;
Graphite reinforced necks
String through body bridges
Better tuning machines
Fatter headstocks (to eliminate dead spots)
The S1 switch
More options
Those are the facts. So, which one is better? Neither one really. It all depends on what you want.:thumb:

I took off my pickguard too. Do people get all upset about it when they see yours?
I just noticed the cavities in yours, is that just on the MIMs?
