Hey im in a band an we are starting to get money for gigs and so on. Anyways out band consist of a drummer, bassist/vocal and guitar/vocal. The other day i was tryin really hard to right music for our second ep when i thought to myself.. is this really fair that me and the guitarist (we share writing) are doing this hours of hardwork and every practice take these songs to the drummer and he just makes crappy easy beats. But gets the same amout of money. this drummer to describe him in 2 words would be "lazy" Uncreative" it just doesnt seem fair to me whats everyones thoughts.
Ino our songs would be songs without him but still the moeny is getting split 3 ways but the work effort isnt?:thumb:
I dont think you should get anymore - Why dont you MAKE him take part in the song writing and ask him to be more creative. A band isnt a band if it has a hierarchy.

I agree. Just talk to him about it. When he plays something simple tell him it sucks and that he should try doing some fills or something.

Either find a new drummer or stop complaining. you can't pay him less.

Talk with him, see if hes willing to contribute. If hes not willing to contribute any insite into the band what so ever and he's lazy, thats a dead hint. You might as well find a new drummer, atleast one with a good personality with similar interests as you and your other band member, and one that desires and carries on the same ideals as you do.

yeah i agree with peavey^, just talk to him and let him know how you feel about his input, he might think you guys dont want him to say anything or maybe hes afraid to try to add. dont just blame him for not knowing how you feel about it.

Do what our band does. Whenever we make money we put it in a bank account for our next recording. Works wonders. Im sure you guys are not making multi figures so im sure that amount of money when you split it up would not be heaps.

How much money are you talking about?
*shrug* That parts up to you.
In the professional realm a points system is used for different parts of the process. Lyrics, Melody and the rest. You get extra points (wich translates % in share of profits) for writing part (or all) of the lyrics or/and melody(s).
You can contact your local Musicians Union office and get ahold of the exact current numbers that pertain to that if you wish.

Get over yourself.
You can't pay him less. You're a band, you all perform together, and you split the profits evenly. It sounds like you need a new drummer or a change in attitude.

So, he might not make a huge stir in the writing process. So, try playing one of your songs at rehersal, and then just stop in the middle of it. See how empty your sound is? See how important your drummer is?
He knows how important his drummer is but he would like him to be more creative in the writing process and generally during playing.
I think.

Next, you need to be over 18 to play there. We got ovffered a gig at next a few weeks back, but our drummer won't be around when the gig is on, so that kinda sucks. They said they would call us again when they had a free slot with punk bands.

Im not sure i dont think you need to be over 18. Cause bands ino who are younger then us play at clubs and pubs? I dunno apparently you can play there as long as you dont stay there afterwards or before.. Howd you get offered a gig there who did you talk to?

This is what you should do.
You're at a stage where you need to invest in your future. If you take the pay you get from gigs now and each take a share and spend it on random things then in a while (be it months, or a year) when you want to record your debut, or print merchandise e.t.c. You'll be stuck for money and you'll have to raise it which will probably end up with you going for a less pricey option (be it a cheaper studio, less tracks, less money spent on cd printing, less t-shirts printed) e.t.c.
Also if you do this, the drummer will see that he won't be making any money unless the band really starts to take off and if he really is undedicated then this might be enough to demonstrate it completely.
If you take that $400 and save it for recording then that'll be a massive help. Alot of bands forget how costly even a small studio can be for a 12 track album and it's not something you want to cut corners on otherwise you'll be apologising to people about it for a long time.
This might mean that you need to get a part time job to buy those luxuries you want but at the moment you won't have such a busy schedual that you don't have time.
Just keep the money in the band otherwise you're damaging your chances of making it.

yeah dude, i know who they are. Yeah arthouse shows are good for starting out man, and the owners there are ****ing nice people. You should also try and get a gig at the Barley Corn on Johnston st. If we ever need a band to play with us we will give you a call, but we have no gigs until early feb or so.
