i play drums and i borrowed my girlfriends bass to have a twiddle on for a few days coz bass sounds cool. everyone in here is talking about fingers. is there anything wrong with playing with one of those big chunky picks i assume is for bass? also do you hold it like is a guitar, ie your picking hand in the same position as on electric guitar?

Yeah its cool using a pick on your bass, personally i dont, i find fingers much easier and if you wanna take bass up you should probally opt for fingers.
As far as positioning goes i dunno how you would hold an electric guitar with a pick, im guessing kind of flowing parallel with the strings, fool around and see what works for you.

I use various techniques, like the majority of players.
I play fingerstyle, slap, pick, tap etc.
Im really getting into picking now, but only on good fast and heavy songs.

Use whatever technique gives you the sound you want. If that's playing with your fingers, fine. If it's playing with your pick, fine. If it's setting the bass on fire and seeing how far you can throw it, go right ahead.
