sorry i'v been gone for awhile (if anyone even noticed :p ) my computer was busted. anyway, i've been thinking about buying a fender precision (MIM) and doing some heavy modifications. two mods that i'm not sure of are doing a neck replacement and making the body string thru. i've heard bad things about neck replacements, but i've also heard that those are just myths. what's real? also, is it possible to make a bass string thru fairly easily? can it even be done?

If you're doing this.. just order a bass from http://www.warmoth.com. You can choose your body (so neck through is an option) and your own neck. Why would you want to change the neck from your MIM? It isn't that bad..

And besides.. you shouldn't buy a bass if you don't like the neck. Or the neck should be the only thing you don't like about it.

Why are you replacing the Neck in the first place? Is there something wrong with it or you just rather have something different on it like a maple fretboard? I comtimplated of doing the same thing but instead I'm just going to save up and build my own bass one day. If you're looking for good parts, go with Warmoth.

Don't change the neck.

Making the body string through would take a while, and a new bridge is needed, as well. Well, atleast that means you won't be getting a Badass :D.

i only would chang the neck if i couldn't find one with a maple fingerboard. I'd rather not change the neck, but i can't find cheap used or new p-basses with maple necks.

There aren't any standard P's with a maple fretboard. There's the Big Block and the '51 reissue (and the Sting), but no standard.

Is it THAT big of a deal? It's just a fretboard. If it sounds good, who cares? Or is this a looks thing?

If you're gonna spend a couple hundred on a bass, you might as well get what you want.

one thing regarding changing out the neck on an MIM Fender. All replacement necks available that mount to Fender heel pocket specifications are made for MIA Fenders. The MIM models have a slightly smaller neck pocket, and some modification to the heel block on the new neck is required in order to make it fit. A good neck won't be cheap, so this might not even be worth your time once you make the modification to the new neck, which you could potentially screw up.

He's spending a couple of hundred dollars on a bass that DOESN'T have what he wants, and has to mod it for it to have it.

i'd like to get an MIA, but they always go pretty high on ebay. (i almost got one a few days ago, but i was out bid on the last minute!) also, i can't afford a new one (ATM, anyway). if it's that much trouble to change the neck, i might just wait and save for an MIA. also, what pickups are stock in MIAs? would it be wise to change them if i wanted to, or is it too hard with the S-1 switch?

I don't think the S-1 will make it any less (or more) difficult to change pickupss but don't quote me on that.

No problem. And of course, MIA is Made in America, CIJ is crafted/constructed in Japan, and MIAHSSC is Made in a High School Shop Class.
