I suppose you could count Nuclear Rabbit as metal, so Jean Baudin, also, Sean Malone from Cynic (cheers mailing list)

I don't listen to a great deal of metal, but Tye Zamora from Alien Ant Farm, that Ryan guy from Mudvayne, and, though some people might disagree, Sam Rivers from limpbizkit; he's written some pretty intelligent lines

Indeed a lot of metal bassists play the notes an octave down, but what about playing the lead an octave down? Laid To Rest-Lamb Of God, kinda hard to here John Cambell but for the record he does to the guitar part also.

1. Jason King (I think that's his name)
2. Kevin Falk
3. Dan Briggs

Those three bassists played/play for Between The Buried and Me. Dan Briggs is the current bassist with the other two being past members.

They are all excellent bassists.

Adrian Lambert (I think that's his name) is the bassist for DragonForce, and he's an excellent bassist as well. He might root note a lot, but that's some fast root noting that he has to do.

Into The Moat has some good bass in it. The bass really shows during their jazzy breakdowns. They're currently looking for a bassist as far as I know. They lost their original one, and then they had another one that just did the tour with them, but he quit or something. They'll be on their third bassist as well. I don't know the other two bassists' names.

The bassist for Symphony X on "The Odyssey" is good as well.

Job For A Cowboy has some nice bass points in it as well. There are some points where it stands out. It might not be too exciting, but it works well with them.

None. Metal is just a horrible genre in which guitarists detune to the point in which they are playing in the bassist's octave, forcing inaudibility from the bass guitar.

+1.

I practice this song about everyday (on a P-bass w/ high action:thumb: ) to work on my speed/coordination. In fact, John Campbell is one of my favorite metal bassists, even if he only plays open-D for some of the songs. :p

Yeah, I heard the term punk funk thrash being thrown around for the early albums (Frizzle Fry, Seas of Cheese etc.) so as thrash = form of metal, yeah, Primus are a metal band.

dont be so close minded about metal, just because the bass is really low doesnt mean its inaudible, half the time its drop C/D which is still above a 5 string bass, so I cant see it being "inaudible" I do it sometimes when my band plays metal and I think it sounds sweet. Anyways for a good metal bassist check out symphony x, not the exactly metal, but its some type of metal.

He's highly over-rated

Shadow's Fall had an ok-ish bassist, Nile have a good player and so is The Haunted.

Hard to stand out in a metal band due to the low tuning and the fact of shred guitarist. I play in a death-thrash band so i know its hard to show your 'skills', but the genre of music dose'nt really call of a busy bass just play the riffs and enjoy the music.

Save your talent for something more worth while.

Cliff Burton was good, but ive yet to hear anything mind blowing from Jason. He is a solid player, and his tone rocks, but he isnt a god or anything like some people make him out to be. My advice if your going to be in a metal band i say go one guitarist, my band has one guitarist and i have heaps of room to play around in. Ive never been drowned out by his guitar and plus i have a crisp enough tone when im playing to keep me heared. Muddy tones, or smooth tones dont do any good in metal unless you have the right attack i spose.

All the bassists that i would say that are awesome have already been said, except the guy from testament (Not Steve) "Practice What You Preach" is a good example of his playing.

What do you consider technically adept? Yeah he can write parts that fit but they are hardly technical in any sense to anyone who can truly claim to be a bassist.

If you are versed in an instrument, then your perception of technical music changed from your apparent view.

Honestly, listen to Into the Moat and tell me cliff burton is technical.

Here I'll even help you http://www.myspace.com/intothemoat

Again, turn off your radio. Perhaps learn about music.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention another good bassist in my last post. Greg Weeks from The Red Chord.

Jason's stuff in Metallica wasn't really that good until Load/Reload, and by then most metal fans turned their back on Metallica because they went "soft"...his stuff in Flotsam and Jetsam, however, is/was amazing. Try and find the album "Doomsday for the Deceiver."
