Do you have mics yet? I use an Alesis board with USB capabilities and 4 mics recording into Audacity (free recording program). Works pretty well.

I use... a nady sp1 on the snare, a nady sp-1 on the hats, a nady kick mic in the bass drum, and an a mxl overhead into a 14 channel behringer mixer into audacity

I use cakewalk for the program, and plug my mixer directly into my comps sound card. I use the shure drum mic pack, thats about 350 then the mixer will run you at LEAST another hundred (usually two) so you are lookin at about 500 bucks here for quality, is that over your buget? Check out my thread "Audio of my saturn" theres a sound clip with the shure mics being used. Its not the greatest but you can pretty much hear what they are. I can get any sound i want, with EQ'ing and fiddling with things.

Samson Q7 (really a vocal/guitar mic, but it works great for drums) positioned carefully so that the cymbals don't "fuzz up" in the mix. It's affordable and easy, at least for now. When I get a job next year I'll eventually get mics and a mixer. I hope.
