I play bass, and I've recently gotten the urge to record directly, not thru a mic. Can someone tell me what I need to plug straight in [so its either Bass -> Comp or Bass -> Amp -> Comp]?

there 2 methods the second will give you better results...
bass guitar ----lead -----computer line in (you will lack a good tone)
bass guitar ----amp(lineout) ----computer line in
and there are various recording programs

I'm good with programs.
What kind of cable would I need for your second option? An XLR to what?

Just get a 1/8 to 1/8 (these are like headphone size) cable and get a 1/8 to 1/4th adapter (like the one for your guitar). Then run the 1/4 out of the line out and run the 1/8 into yoru line in, not mic in, but line in on your computer. Adjust the volume on your amp and I think you will be set. Good luck.

Good luck.My line out isn't a 1/4 jack though. It's an XLR [like the type vocalist mics use], the kind with 3 pins.

If your line out is XLR, thats good. You will need an interface or mixer to let your computer access that signal, but trust me, it's much better than just using jacks and adapters.

What were you using to record when you used a mic?

I put a mic by my amp and played into sound recorder, then edited with Audition.

You might want to check out something like this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/630166/). It may seem like to much right now, but it is worth it considering you are proboably going to want something like that eventually anyway. Theres no point in buying something cheap then buying something expensive. Mine as well just buy the expensive one.
