Ok, here’s a chance for us to have a little fun aside from all of the elaborate write-ups. In this thread we will discuss any and every meaning of lyrics. We will describe why we like them, who wrote them, and the personal meaning it gives to us. For example…
Song: In mist she was standing
One of the first Opeth songs that I heard, this song brought on the journey for me and I started discovering better and more genres of music.
Seven milestones...
Under a watching autumn eye
Contorted trees are spreading forth
The message of the wind
With frozen hands I rode with the stars
With anger the wind blew
Giving wings to my stallion
Clouds gathered across the moon
Blazing, the white light
Passing the lake I know so well
I am near, yet so far away
The personal meaning it brings me is pretty broad, if you read the lyrics you can tell how beautiful they are. Your turn

2.Mastadon - Seabeast

If I stand around and watch them drown in a pool of gray
When we dive in I can surely say there's feud with force
Am I in your way? Please knock me down. Can I help you in?
When I'm not around let us all be found in certain ways
Dear Mr. Queequeg you have been informed your life's been saved
You are not a black-hearted vicious mess so it has been claimed
If this is the beast pulling us towards the east with mighty waves
Let us look inside and pull out all your pride you know it's up to us
Holding pasts in ash black earth
Bound by roots
Roots into sand
Grow towards the giver
There's an open wound placed upon my heart in anger's rage
If we open up a spirit, a spirit that can bleed
Ahab the leading lad we can trust his obsession carries them
Meet us at the temple healing all the crippled
Don't forget the maimed
Lower soul sent with gifts offering
Teeth of hope travel with
Child laid next to mother
Taken from the song "Seabeast" from Mastodon's Leviathan
This, I believe, is about a cold-hearted captain watching his men die in any sort of sea-based calamity. However, he is seeing through the deaths of his men that there is indeed feeling inside him.
Please, can I have someone else's opinion on this?

Good idea. I'm not too good at lyrics, I want to learn so bad though.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
My Interpretation:
I think this song is the band expressing there feelings to Syd after he went mad. They are asking him if he can tell the differences between heaven and hell, cold comfort, and change. The song's title is the band wishing they could be with the syd they knew before. But remeber over analysing the songs runes theme so take them as a whole and only disect them for fun. :)
By the way, Great idea for a thread man.

Bob Dylan- Subterranean Homesick Blues
Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten
Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows
Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters
Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles
Love the lyrics in this song. It's nuts, the lyrics seem absolutely genius and completely senseless at the same time. Overall, the lyrics describe the tumultuous atmosphere of the mid-sixties. The extremely fast pace of the song just adds to the chaotic feel of the song. I don't really know how to describe them, but the lyrics are just so genius and epitomize the sixties so perfectly.

Today I've seen the shallow face I wear
Inside this shell,
a living hell endures
I'm held captive by my fear,
decaying hope and wasted years
The knife of time carves another
line around these eyes
Good and evil - lust primeval
Dragging me into a sea of lies
Losing faith in who I am
Never changing just rearranging
my life again
Through into an eternal abyss I fall,
Silent screams through paper walls
I pray someday the sun will shine
on me again (shine on me again)
Good and evil - lust primeval
Dragging me into a sea of lies

But I love who this song can appeal to most anyone getting caught up trying to be someone they arent.

Angels mourn; crying, praying for your soul
As my eyes open from their state of sleep,
I feel my blood turn into a frozen river
Nightmares, just lies
Death was in the air
My heart locked shut, and I gave you the key
Promise never, never to leave!
As lies hold me and this emptiness fills my broken heart
Screaming your name hoping for a response
Silence
Summer, drowned by winter!
To look in your face and realized the time we spent
The chances I had...
...Have drifted away from my fingertips,
Your life, your thoughts, your dreams, your love
Never tried my hardest and now I pray as the hurt enters
I love you, and I still love you;
Even though I... Even though I never showed it
A piece of me is gone forever
Clutching memories held so close
Repeating words of love spoken too late
My eyes look all around, but all they can focus on is you, for in
you, I find me
Days pass by and thy death still lingers
This coldness will never satisfy me
I want to be surrounded by angels,
In a place where the sun is so warm,
It burns my insides
Surrounded by angels. Surrounded by angels
Where love takes my darkest depressions...
And throws it into the deepest sea
A place I can call home, I'm crying to you, Jesus
Mend me, break me, make me
You're all I've got now
My eyes look all around, but all they can focus on is you, for in you
I find me. Farewell my friend, your time has come. And never will I be
able to tell you "I love you" again....
It's obviously about someone Dallas Taylor lost, but it's pretty good lyricism imo (oh Christian Death Metal)

New Millenium Cyanide Christ- Meshuggah
I'm a carnal, organic anagram
Human flesh instead of written letters
I rearrange my pathetic tissue
I incise, I replace, I'm reformed
I eradicate the fake pre-present me
Elevate me to a higher human form
The characters I am
Headed to a world Godly
Then I'll be the new norm
Self inflicted fractures
I replace my bones with bars
Aluminum bleeding oxide
Drug of Gods into my pounding veins
My decieving eyes exchanged with fuses
Blindness induced to prevent destruction
Ceramic blades implanted
Past my ribs to save me from the dues of inhalation
I tear my worldly, useless skin
Staples to pin it over my ears
Non-receptive of Ungodly sounds
I disable the audio-generators of fear
Hexagonal bolts
To fill my mouth
Sharpened to deplete
The creator of all violence
Without speech there will be no deciet
Baptized in vitriolic acid
A final touch, a smoothing of features
Completion, of the greatest art
To cast the Godly creatures
Humans once astray, made divine
Stripped of congenital flaws
We're incandescent revelations
In a world of darkened forms
Disciples, come join with me
To save a failed humanity
Follow the God of cyanide
Into the new eternity
Behold, a sacrificial race
A cleansing worshipping of pain
The new millenium Christ
Here to redeem all from lies
The lyrics are about the weak human body being replaced by machines, and the redemption that can be achieved through self-mutilation. The way the words are put to the music is just awesome.

My Interpretation:
The poem (this isn't really a song) starts off as a sort of recipe for a happy and successful life. By the end, though, it's become pretty clear that this is the perfect life for a soulless automaton--it describes modern life in terms of goals, possessions, happiness and achievements, and things that all Well-Adjusted People are supposed to do.

Opeth - Windowpane
Blank face in the windowpane
Made clear in seconds of light
Disappears and returns again
Counting hours, searching the night
Might be waiting for someone
Might be there for us to see
Might be in need of talking
Might be staring directly at me
Inside plays a lullaby
Slurred voice over children cries
On the inside
Haunting loneliness in the eye
Skin covering a secret scar
His hand is waving a goodbye
There's no response or action returned
There is deep prejudice in me
Outshines all reason inside
Given dreams all ridden with pain
And projected unto the last
My Interpretation:
I'm pretty damn sure the song is about child abuse (physical and maybe sexual), and when I've played the song to friends, they've come to the same conclusion on their own.
The first verse and the bridge seem to be describing a child, looking out the window, waiting for somebody (his father?) to come home. And when the father does come home, drunk, he assaults his child or children ("slurred voice over children's cries"), scarring them emotionally for life.
"Haunting loneliness in the eye, skin covering a secret scar". This verse seems to be describing the father leaving in the morning for work or whatever, waving to his child, who doesn't return the wave, but just stares blankly out of the window. The final verse seems to be saying that the boy is Mikael and that his father mistreated him, which would be in line with "To Rid The Disease", which also seems to be about a father mistreating him. He seems to be saying that he still has bad dreams about his father's acts, and will for the rest of his life.

Here is Opeth - Serenity Painted Death
Returned from a hibernal dream
Voices fell like marble
No longer by my side
Gone all that would linger
Ripped from my embrace
Melinda reflected in shafts
Red line round her neck
Met the earth in silence
White faced, haggard grin
This serenity painted death
With a halo of bitter disease
Black paragon in lingering breath
White faced, haggard grin
This serenity painted death
With a halo of bitter disease
Black paragon in lingering breath
Saw here fading, blank stare into me
Clenched fist from the beautiful pain
Darkness reared its head
Tearing within the reeling haze
Took control, claiming my flesh
Piercing rage, perfect tantrum
Each and every one would die at my hand
Choking in warm ponds of blood
At last, weak and torn, I went down
Drained from strength, flickering breath
Came with the moon
The wayward in concious state
Flanked and barred in destiny's end
Underneath with hope in laches
Swathed in filth, any would betoken
Starlit shadows on the wall
Finally there to collect me
From the bowels of sin
My Interpretation:
This is chapter 6 in the "Still Life" story. Still Life is a concept album that tells a story. The previous chapters told of how this man was banished from his hometown because of his lack of faith. He won't ever forgive the people that abandoned him, but he has returned to confront the one girl he loves, Melinda. In the previous "chapter", "The Face of Melinda", he confronts her. However, he learns that she has become married.
"Endlessly gazing in nocturnal prime
She spoke of her vices and broke the rhyme
But baffled herself with the final line
My promise is made but my heart is thine"
In this passage at the end of "The Face of Melinda", Melinda states that she is married but her heart belongs to the man who has returned. And this passage from "Serenity Painted Death"-
"Returned from a hibernal dream
Voices fell like marble
No longer by my side
Gone all that would linger
Ripped from my embrace
Melinda reflected in shafts
Red line round her neck
Met the earth in silence"
I believe that Melinda has just commited suicide because she is married to someone she doesn't truly love. The narrator then goes into a state of anger and vows to kill all of the people who had banished him. Which leads to chapter 7, "White Cluster"...

Dogs - Pink Floyd
You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes
closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older
And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've
sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw
around
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of
this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the
winner
And everythings done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

I'm not with you in this one, i think the song is about survival. You have to be constantly watching your back because people will lie and scheme to get what they want in this competitive society. And you have to be willing to do a little of lying and scheming yourself if you want to survive. Kinda like the "survival of the fittest" theorey. But in the end, regardless of what you do or who you are, we will all be affected by the decisions we make and will all have to "reap the harvest we have sown." Agalloch - In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion
Through vast valleys I wonder
To the highest peaks
On pathways through a wild forgotten landscape
In search of God, in spite of man
'til the lost forsaken endless. . .
This is where I choose to tread
Fall. . .so shall we fall into the nihil?
The nothingness that we feel in the arms of the pale
In the shadow of the grim companion who walks with us
Here is the landscape
Here is the sun
Here in the balance of the earth
Where is the god?
Has he fallen and abandoned us?
As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
The fire in my heart is forged across the land
Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God. . .
Then God is not dead
I walked down to a river and sat in reflection of what had to be done
An offering of crimson flowed into the water below
A wound of spirit from which it floated and faded away
. . .like every hope I've ever had. . .
. . .like every dream I've ever known. . .
It washed away in a tide of longing, a longing for a better world
From my will, my throat, to the river, and into the sea. . .
. . .wash away. . .
. . .fade away. . .
Here is the landscape
Here is the sun
Here at the edge of the earth
Where is the god?
Has he fallen to ruin?
As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
My heathen pride is scarred across the land
My Interpretation:
The whole concept of the album "The Mantle" is about the death of human kind, and in this song, the existance of God is questioned and the "character" in the song appears to find the truth.
I wonder if the person this songs talks about dies at the end, or if he is the same person who appears in the whole album.
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Train set and match spied under the blind
Shiny and contoured the railway winds
And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed
The hiss of the train at the railway head
Always the summers are slipping away
A 60 ton angel falls to the earth
A pile of old metal, a radiant blur
Scars in the country, the summer and her
Always the summers are slipping away
Find me a way for making it stay
When I hear the engine pass
I'm kissing you wide
The hissing subsides
I'm in luck
When the evening reaches here
You're tying me up
I'm dying of love
It's OK
My Interpretatiin:
This song is so eerie yet incredible at the same time. The content is extremely deep. The lyrics are so odd that the song is definitely hard to interpret. This might be a big stretch but I think the train is a metaphor for a relationship in ruins. The first few verses describe the loud sound of the train and how it scars the beauty of the countryside. Keeping this in mind, the relationship dysfunction (or train) is destroying the beauty of the relationship.
"Always the summers are slipping away
Find me a way for making it stay"
These lyrics make the song. Here, one of the lovers is looking for a way to save the relationship. When he or she does, the train passes through and everything is back the way is was. Yes, it's a big stretch but that's how I see the song.

INVISIBLE - DIO
If your circle stays unbroken then you're a lucky man 'cause it never never never has for me
In the palace of the virgin lies the chalice of the soul and it's likely you might find the answer there
She had thirteen years of teenage tears and never a helping hand
She had fourteen more of rain before she saw the sight of land
She was a photograph just ripped in half a smile inside a frown
And then the light the answer right inside her coming down
She said I can go away I can leave here I can be invisible I'll go away
He was just eighteen and in between a lady and a man
His daddie's girl in momma's world and that was when he ran
You know the word confused has been abused but that's just what he was
And then the spark inside the dark the answer came because it said
You can go away you can leave here you can be be be invisible
Well I grew up quick and I felt the kick of life upon a stage
So I bought the book and took a fast look at just the very last page
It was a single word that I'd just heard from the two that came before
The only way to really stay is to walk right out the door
So you can go away I'm gonna leave here I can be invisible and go away again
I can go away when I leave here I can be invisible
I said when I've gone away lord you know it's right to leave here
So I've just become invisible I've been away yes I've been before you rise
You never touch me you never feel me you'll never see me again because I've just become unseen
Well I'm a photograph that's been torn in half and the only teen never in between
We need a helping hand to the holy land to be invisible to go away
INTERPRETATION
I haven't got a clue with this; it's been one of my favourite songs for 20 years, and I've yet to figure out if it's got a real meaning, or if it's just random.
I thought someone might have an idea

Well, Napalm Death was in the first days a political band, as you know Grindcore is a link of punk hardcore and metal.
Punk was anarchist, but even then it existed fake idealist bands, Napalm Death founded grindcore with some punk ideals but taken seriously.
Then I interpreted like that, it's accurate, of course people could disagree.

Isis - Carry
And the water takes hold
Fills his lungs and crushes his body
Dust floats through sun and water
As you draw close
Fall to me
He sees like his never seen before
I will carry you
True and free
And the water carries him away
Now that you are here
You'll swim with me
Soon he ceases to be at all
I am clutching you
True
He sees like he never sees before
He is light in water
My interpreatation
I could be entirely wrong, but it seems these lyrics suggest some kind of trancidental experience in water. To me, it seems as though the subject is drowning, though it is not a painful or frightening experience. Rather they are changing, becoming a spiritual entity. At first I thought the narrative of this song was from the point of view of a female, a lover perhaps. However, I don't think that is the case. I think the narrative is from an omniscient perspective, though sometimes slips into the water's (itself) point of view.
The subject is obviously in the water, he is drowning
"The water takes hold, Fills his lungs and crushes his body."
The next bit speaks of his departure from his current self in the water, leaving his burderns and becoming true and free. You almost get the feel the subject is englightened by this experience.
"He sees like he's never seen before. I will carry you true and free."
The next bit is final stage of the experience. He dies, and he becomes unrestricted. The truth, freedom.
"Soon he ceases to be at all"
The last two lines seem to me, the most profound. The use of current tense in "he sees like he never sees before" indicates that he is still 'alive'. (Another suggestion of a trancidental experience). It also shows that he percieves in an entirely new way, adding to the feeling of enlightenment. "He is light in water" emphasises this. He is a new being, he is unrestricted, true and free - he is light in water.
Sorry for the long post. This isn't based on anything I have read or heard, so it could be entirely wrong. This is simply what it means to me.

This is a repost of something i posted before in the Opeth thread. One more Opeth write-up won't hurt:p
As promised here’s a lyrical analysis of April Ethereal, but before I delve into that I think its necessary to look more deeply at the text attributed to the first track on MAYH (the track has no vocals), the prologue, which sets up the story rather nicely.
Prologue
“A morning in magenta, the petals fed from the dew.
She held her breath for a moment, to pause off the stream.
Still clinging to vast, old memories.
The coffin is beautifully engraved. Stained by soil, symbols of death.
All of which are stared upon, with porcelain eyes it seems.”
We begin with a very somber setting at a burial (the rain audible on this track and the dirt that is said to stain the coffin makes this clear that this is the actual burial rather than simply the funeral). The person who has passed away (we’ll soon find out that this person it actually narrating this story) was very close to the woman mentioned in the second line—a serious relationship between the two is implied here although the specific type of relationship is currently ambiguous. This woman is grief stricken as a result of the passing and is moved to tears (The second line actually refers to her attempt to restrain herself, as she holds her breath to stop crying—to stop the stream of tears. In case any of you are prone to maudlin moments you should keep this in mind as it works ).
“Some spoke, and it was my turn to go.
In death entwined, I could not believe.
But it hangs around my neck.
A soft breeze passed me by, somewhat warmer for a second.
I knew it was the coming of spring, thus our APRIL ETHEREAL.”
Here we find out that it is in fact the narrator’s burial and that even met with death, the narrator cannot bring himself to accept the religious ideology embodied in the symbol that is wrapped around his neck (a symbol that we shall shortly find out is a crucifix in April Ethereal). Thus the narrator can find neither peace nor fulfillment in his afterlife and as is customary of those that reject the afterlife, he chooses for his spirit is to remain in the Earthly realm…..

April Ethereal
“It was me, peering through the looking-glass.
Beyond the embrace of Christ.
Like the secret face within the tapestry.
Like a bird of prey over the crest.”
Thus the story continues albeit in a new setting. Line 2 sheds light on the last few lines in Prologue and thereby affirms that he did reject/was wearing a symbol of Christ. The narrator is described as looking intently through a window, hidden amidst his surroundings yet still well-positioned and with keen determination to not be seen (just as a bird of prey may choose to scout the landscape from a hill at the expense of greater vulnerability, as its position may further endanger itself).
“And she was swathed in sorrow, as if born within its mask.”
We can now assume he’s at or rather just outside the female characters house, although details in this case aren’t too important. This line lets us know that, alas, the poor lady is still grief stricken over the narrator’s death—and that’s the only information essential to understanding the plot. Mikael puts this in an interesting way by describing her situation “as being born within the mask (of sadness)”. Adds an interesting perspective to such emotions, a paradigm similar to one presented in Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author” in which a family of characters are essentially freeze framed at a particular instance in time, in which they find themselves to be almost fully defined by the emotion they experienced during that said time. The characters are described by the author to be wearing very stylized masks that capture their emotion and thereby also become the most poignant definitions of their character as a result of the bizarre circumstances already described…. Oh right.. almost forgot—the tie-in. The description used here prompts the same question of by giving us an image of sadness as being an, if not impersonal mask, a universal one. When we’re sad we are the mercy at the totality of that emotion, for that instant in time it completely defines us and thereby our personal uniqueness is momentarily and possibly tragically lost beneath these masks of emotion. You may or may not find that to be true, nonetheless its captivating food for thought imo but in this case a needless aside. Sorry!
“Her candlelight snuffed, the icon smiled.
Emptiness followed by her wake.
I could clasp her in undying love.
Within ghostlike rapture the final word was mine.”
Here we get more words that d0cument the depth of her depression—that’s the general meaning of the first 2 lines but I’m at a loss for specifics in this case. What’s more valuable is the broader understanding of the plot we receive from the next two lines—The narrator and female character had a loving relationship prior to his death and their relationship was a strand left loose so to speak—a case of unfinished business. The last line seems to comment—rather triumphantly--on how this out of body experience has allowed him to trump destiny and fulfill Earthly desires that he should no longer have after death. A sense of power that will soon lose its merit.
“She faced me in awe. 'twas a token of ebony colour.
Embodied in faint vapour.
Wandering through April's fire.
Compelled to grasp and to hold the one that was you.”
The last three lines only embellish the concepts we established earlier, he’s a ghost whose come back to hold on to his life love. However the first line is rather foreboding as it describes her response to finally seeing him as a negative one—a dark sign of the things to come (“twas a token of ebony colour”). Token here has a non-material definition—one that really isn’t too commonly associated with the word from my experience. Looking up common words in a dictionary can be of great help as many of these common words have a multiplicity of meanings. Knowledge is half the battle! [/GI Joe]
“I will endure, hide away.
I would outrun the scythe, glaring with failure.”
He is at this point willing to escape the trappings of death to be with her. The scythe is a weapon associated with the grim reaper and therefore death.
“It is a mere destiny I thought, a threshold I had crossed before.
The rain was waving goodbye, and when the night came
the forest folded its branches around me.
Something passed by, and I went into a dream.
She laughing and weeping at once: "take me away".
He believes he is capable of maintaining his position as a ghost who lingers on Earth but is soon swept away against his will by the powers of nature—the rain and forest are of sharp contrast to his current being. They are the natural in the world where he currently abides by an unnatural lifestyle. In any case he finds himself overpowered and forcefully taken away, leaving the narrator confused and at a loss for words.
“I don't know how or why, I'll never know WHEN.”
Wow finally done. Discussion welcome.

The Siren
A lady with a violin playing to
the seals
Hearken to the sound of calling
Who tied my hands to
the wheel?
The zodiac turns over me
(Come to me)
Somewhere there my fate
revealed
I hear but how will I see
I tied myself to the wheel
The winds talk to my sails,
not me
(Come to me)
Somewhere there my fate
revealed
I hear but how will I see
Interpretations:
I am guessing this is about a sailor, who is in a strong storm and is about to witness the end of his life.
Who tied my hands to
the wheel?
The zodiac turns over me
(Come to me)
Somewhere there my fate
revealed
I hear but how will I see
I'm thinking he doesn't know why he is still trying to drive the ship, "tied my hands to the wheel"
He then saw his "fate revealed" because he pretty much knows that he will die.
Then the spray of the ocean got in his eyes, but he can still hear the raging ocean that will soon take his life.
I tied myself to the wheel
The winds talk to my sails,
not me
(Come to me)
Somewhere there my fate
revealed
I hear but how will I see
He then knows that out of pure detemination HE tied himself to the wheel, although he might not of known.
He then states that the wind talks to his sails, or the wind pushs his ship, not him.
Then he still cannot see, yet he can hear the ocean still.
This is a really confusing song, yet so beautiful...

Quite possibly the best song in the world for me.
ANATHEMA- ONE LAST GOODBYE
How I needed you
How I bleed now you're gone
In my dreams I can see you
But I awake so alone
I know you didn't want to leave
Your heart yearned to stay
But the strength I always loved in you
Finally gave way
Somehow I knew you would leave me this way
Somehow I knew you could never stay
And in the early morning light
After a silent peaceful night
You took my heart away
In my dreams I can see you
I can tell you how I feel
In my dreams I can hold you
It feels so real
And I still feel the pain
I still feel your love
I still feel the pain
I still feel your love
Somehow I knew you would leave me this way
Somehow I knew you could never stay
And in the early morning light
After a peaceful night
You took my heart away
I wish you could have stayed
This song is about the death of the Cavanagh brother's mother and is absolutely heartbreaking in concert. The lyrics are quite obvious. She died peacefully in her sleep and in such simple words, they manage to convey such intense yearning.

Yeah that's a great job ATC. I don't have anything by that band, any recommended albums?
I'd recommend The Silent Enigma for their doomiest side, Alternative 4 and Judgment for their intermediate (mixing both their earlier doom elements with their later prog elements) and A natural disaster for their newest side. Depending on where you stand on the spectrum, you'll love a different album.
No, scratch that, just download or buy the DVD to Were you there? Their performances with the Liverpool Orchestra + their greatest hits. I'd upload it if I wasn't on dialup now.

Led Zeppelin - No Quarter
Close the doors, put out the light
You know they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter,
They ask no quarter.
Walking side by side with death
The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path that no one goes
They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter
Interpretation
This is a song about war, or more accuratly a battle.
The first verse, shows people are preparing for war, they are preparing to fight against this evil, thats seemingly holding these people down.
The second Verse seems to be about the battle itself, these people fighting against this Evil.
The Saying 'No Quarter' means to give your all, to do as much as you can and never look back.

This is a really confusing song, yet so beautiful...
I think this is a song about the Sirens of Ancient Greek Mythology.
Sirens were beautiful female creatures who lured sailors to their doom with their wonderful singing, no-one who heard them could resist.
Odysseus had himself tied to the mast of his ship so that he could hear them and not be lured to destruction. All his crew were told by him to ignore any orders he gave them whilst under the influence of their song. (The rest of the crew had something stuffed in their ears so they were immune)
So Odysseus became the first person to survive hearing the Siren's call.
The bit in the song about hearing but no seeing refers to the fact that although he was close enough to hear their song, he wasn't close enough to see what beautiful creatures were doing the singing (and he wants to see them real bad:naughty: )

Opeth - Blackwater Park
Confessor
Of the tragedies in man
Lurking in the core of us all
The last dying call for the everlost
Brief encounters, bleeding pain
Lepers coiled neath the trees
Dying men in bewildered soliloquys
Perversions bloom round the bend
Seekers, lost in their quest
Ghosts of friends frolic
under the waning moon
It is the year of death
Wielding his instruments
Stealth sovereign reaper
Touching us with ease
Infecting the roots in an instant
Burning crop of disease
I am just a spectator
An advocate documenting the loss
Fluttering with conceit
This doesn't concern me yet
Still far from the knell
Taunting their bereavement
Mod round the dead
Point fingers at the details
Probing vomits for more
Caight in unbridled suspense
We have all lost it now
Catching the flakes of dismay
Born the travesty of man
Regular pulse midst pandemonium
You're plucked to the mass
Parched with thirst for the wicked
Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark
The sun sets forever over Blackwater park
My Interpretation:
I did some thinking, and this is what I've come up with.
This is the magnum opus of the album; while musically some of the other songs are better (The Funeral Portrait, Dirge For November, Bleak) thematically, Blackwater Park outshines the rest. It is an analogy - on the surface, it talks of a village (Blackwater Park) where sin and disease have taken hold, and where people are dying off, until at last the narrator too is infected and dies. However, the song is an analogy for the evils in the world - Mikael is watching corruption and violence destroy the world slowly because of all the wrongs we've commited. The intro sums that up: "Confessor of the tragedies in man, lurking in the core of us all. The last dying call for the everlost; brief encounters, bleeding pain."
The narrator recalls visions of horror... "Lepers coiled neath the trees; dying men in bewildered soliloquys. Perversions bloom round the bend; seekers, lost in their quest. Ghosts of friends frolic under the waning moon ." The whole town around the man is dying out. People wander aimlessly through the world, unsure of their purposes in life.
In terms of the story, the narrator is an uninfected person, "an advocate documenting the loss". He sees the sickness but is not a part of it yet: "It is the year of death, wielding his instruments. Stealth sovereign reaper, touching us with ease. Infecting the roots in an instant, burning crop of disease." In a literal sense, he is avoiding the immoral acts of the modern world and trying to live a good life. "Fluttering with conceit; this doesn't concern me yet. Still far from the knell, taunting their bereavement " So far, he is proud of the fact that he has avoided the "disease" of such failings, and he can laugh at those who have given up, but he knows that one day he will end up like all the others.
Mikael points out mankind's morbid fascination with violence and terror ("Point fingers at the details, probe vomits for more. Caught in unbridled suspense."), and how we as a society have "lost it now", at every moment "catching the flakes of dismay" - taking in every gory detail of life via the media. He points out the sick attitudes of today's youth in his metaphor about plague survivors who more and more often want to investigate the "disease" rather than exterminate it: "Born the travesty of man, regular pulse midst pandemonium. You're plucked to the mass, parched with thirst for the wicked."
Finally, Mikael remarks "Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark; the sun sets forever over Blackwater Park." As the sickening morbidity of the survivors takes over the town, ruining it forever and confirming its eventual destruction, the metaphor is for the doomed nature of our society. If we keep finding entertainment and interest in the dark side of humanity, the sun will set on us all, too.

Iced Earth - Written on the Walls
Typical of me to an IE song.
One the night the darkness fell
Across the naked land
A demon force was summoned up
From the bowels of hell
The stench of death grew thick that night
We knew it was the end
We run to find a place to hid
The land was raped and bare
The wind it blows a eerie cold
A fog that never lifts
Their tears will flood the land tonight
And the thunder's drowned by screams
As I lay here
Freezing veins of ice
What will be for me
What will be the price
Is it what they say
Is it written on the walls
Why can't we stop
This shattered worlds' fate
Why didn't we try at all
Armageddon town life is gone
We knew it was the way
Written down so long ago
Implanted in our minds
Our fathers told us of this hell
They read it on the walls
It's written on the walls
It's written on the walls
The frightened children know not why
And no one will explain
We've brought it all upon ourselves
An ending to this world
Forgiveness for your soul you pray
But it's written on the walls
My Interpretation
I think this song tells of the Apocolypse. And that the Written On The Walls means that this fate was planned out a long time ago.

Dear Mr. Queequeg you have been informed your life's been saved
You are not a black-hearted vicious mess so it has been claimed
If this is the beast pulling us towards the east with mighty waves
Let us look inside and pull out all your pride you know it's up to us
Holding pasts in ash black earth

Roots into sand

I'm not with you in this one, i think the song is about survival. You have to be constantly watching your back because people will lie and scheme to get what they want in this competitive society. And you have to be willing to do a little of lying and scheming yourself if you want to survive. Kinda like the "survival of the fittest" theorey. But in the end, regardless of what you do or who you are, we will all be affected by the decisions we make and will all have to "reap the harvest we have sown." This is by far my FAVORITE Pink Floyd song. :thumb:

Iced Earth - Brainwashed
I felt like doing another Iced Earth song.
And so we begin with another sin
The earth's enslaved with hypocrites
They lay their heads to rest at night
Say a little prayer and all is right
Christ it's nothing personal
You've got to see
They twist and turn your words
For their own needs
They're brainwashed puppets
The almighty crutch
Cowards of reality
And their dying love
Living life in total lies
Judging others
Believe that I say or burn in hell
Bow down your head
You won't feel so bad
Do as I say or burn in hell
Close your eyes, look deep inside
Master of the ignorant
Master of the lies
Judgment day is close at hand
Generate that blasphemy
Master of the damned
Lies
Now behind your reflection
Lies the one who knows the truth
Your conscience will condemn you
On judgment day you'll lose
It seems very odd to me
How you sin and feel so free
And all you have to do is say
Forgive me ... I believe
Lies, foolish lies
Behind your brainwashed eyes
Lies, foolish lies
Behind your brainwashed eyes
Judge me not my shallow friend
Lest ye be judged yourself
You abuse the words you preach
You mold them for yourself
Brainwashed hypocrisy
Justifies the life you lead
Forgive me father I have sinned
Lay my head to rest again
Living life in total lies
Judging others
Believe what I say or burn in hell
Trust in me, say yes I believe
Do it now or burn in hell
My Interpretation
By reading them, I think its pretty obvious what the song is about. I get them as telling how hypocrite and ignorant man is. Obvious meaning to the Lyrics or not, I still like them.

Iced Earth - Dantes Inferno
Through the fiery caverns we sail
Virgil at my side my guide and master
Questing through the nine plains of hell
Infernal wisdom shall fill my soul
Slowly now the days departing
The darkened air releases me
Frightening visions of my journey
Entrance me to limbo I'm not
Free
In this first verse, it pretty much introduces us to the song. Someone will be going threough the 9 layers of hell. Slowly now the days departing
The darkened air releases me. I see this as him describing a lil what hell is and its affect towards him.
Abandon all hope who enter here
Enter the gates, Charon awaits
Abandon all hope who enter here
For this is where all things are left behind
Every doubt and every cowardice must die
Souls of rage and anger whipping in despair
The souls that wail on this plain pray for death
Denial is the reason for their suffering
Forever being stung by wasps and demons breath
The blood and tears that fall serve the maggots need
Charon is the hells ferry man who brings the dead into hell. This person has now enetered hell, and is in its first layer. The souls here plea for death as they are forever tourtered wasps and demons breath, as the verse says.
Descention, thrusting to the second plain
Minos judges as his tail twines
Lustful thoughts and greed whip these wretched souls
A hurricane of hate mocks their helpless pleas
The person has now arrived in the 2nd plane. A hurricane of hate mocks their helpless pleas. I see this as where theres corpses and spirits pleading the demons of hell for mercy as the demons just laugh in their face so to say.
Drifting now down deeper, into eternal flames
Awake at the third circle, the cold and filthy rain
Punished for their gluttony, languid for all time
The earth it stinks of corpses, damned for all time
The vicious beast Cerebus, three heads, blooded eyes
Tears his talons through the air, all the skinners cry
The third plane is here. Where Cerberus lets the dead souls enter but prevents the ones already here from leaving the underworld.
Down, be still thy cursed wolf
The master scorns its name
Dive to the next plain
The sullen and the vain
Suffer for greed
The prodigal they bleed
For all eternity
Plutus holds the key
Damned, the wrathful and the vain
Suffer the fifth plain
Cross the river Styx
Heed your crucifix
The mudded corpses cry
Howling to the sky
Reach the other side
Open wide the gate
In these paragraphs, the person tells of his journey through the 5th layer. I see this place as burning, filled with flames and corpses with a gate to exit the layer that goes onto the next. River of hate, also known as River Styx. So I would assume this is the place for the souls of the dead that did a crime in their lives, as the verse states suffer for their greed
Enter the sixth circle of barren land and flames
Passing through the gate of dis the furies scream her name
Belching forth in agony invoking her to rise
The spirit's rage consuming us the evil in their cries
Queen of vipers, queen of serpents
Cast their souls to stone
Spread to wealth of Gorgon's power
Medusa¹s inner soul
Honestly all I understand from this one is that their in the sixth plane...so any help for this one would be good.
We¹re drawing ever closer to the seventh hell
They violate their neighbors, their god and themselves
We're sailing slowly through the boiling river of blood
Immersed in the depths below souls scream in agony
The twisted beast he laughs, he draws his arrow back
His sights on anyone exposing of their flesh
He impales their hearts with ease
And shrugs their piercing screams
Pity is they'll never die
They'll suffer here eternally
The seventh layer is here. The person watches as he rides in the river of blood, everyone beeing tortured..and he feels pity for them, because there souls will remain here forever being tortured.
Imagine a place where every horror comes to life
Where every torture is real and time stands still
Eight fiery steps and we're closer to the end
In a cold and timeless grave buried head first in ****
Praying all the while for a quick & painless death
Scratching furiously at scabbed and oozing wounds
These 2 paragraphs here, to me just describes what a soul in hell lives through and how it is for them.
Lucifer ... angel of light
Cast below god of ice
Ruling hell unholy trinity
The traitors freeze for all eternity
Lucifer ... betrayer of god
Tormentor ruthless and cold
Judas' screaming here in agony
The traitors freeze for all eternity
This here, I think, is the 9th plane where Lucifer is.
One of IE's Masterpeices..Hope you guys think this is good. I might be adding sone more details eventualy.

Opeth - The Leper Affinity
We entered Winter once again
Naked, freezing from my breath
Neath the lid all limbs tucked away
This coffin is your abode from now
and onwards
Your body is mine to avail
Such a tragic sight you are
Slave under my creed
Spurring me with those tears
I am beyond death
Midst a dreaming affinity
Saving strength now, faint whispers
Come erotic communion in its splendour
Fever mirrored ghosts
Night time consolation, cross the line
Draw murder into art
Sleep inside through days
In the wake of this relief
Shivering, longing for more
Insanity at it's peak
Love me to my death
Lost are days of Spring
You sighted and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin
Your gaze covered with virgin snow
Rigid features
It's the shallow deeds who is to blame
Deafening shrieks pierced the night
A step from oblivion
Moving into the dim lights
Hiding within a reverie
It was worth it for the wait alone
My Interpretation:
This, to me, is nature or the earth itself speaking. The "breath" of the land is the wind, freezing the ground and all below it. The earth now avails, or uses, the body to its own advantage. The soil itself is nurtured by the corpse, and the decomposition causes the body to return to nature - dust to dust, you know? These lines seem to fit that: "Grew together with your skin, and paced the trails of sin. Your gaze covered with virgin snow; rigid features."
All that suggests somebody dead and buried under the cold winter earth. Yeah, I can see it being a metaphor for human failings - it could even be an analogy for a controlling or smothering relationship, in a sick sort of way. But in a literal sense, I believe it's about death and the eternity of burial.

Iced Earth - The Path I Choose
The third song from the concept album Night of the Stormrider.
It traces the path of a man who is betrayed by religion and turns away from it in anger. The dark forces of nature reach out to this enraged man and use him as their vessel to bring death and destruction to Earth. Through it all, he feels no remorse for his deeds, and upon reaching the end, numbly accepts his fate of eternity in Hell
During the last rays of the sacred moon
I walk the desolate terrain cold and all alone
The rider came to me a black tornado, a violent mass
The cloud of evil rose, now I'm marked for all time
This to me is where the dark forces reach out for him. Where he points out: The cloud of evil rose, now I'm marked for all time. Saying that theres no turning back. Thats how I see it.
Temptation befell me
Darkness is calling for me
This is the path that I choose
This is the path that I choose
This here is pretty straight foward.
Forced power besieged in me
Showing visions of what will be
Now obsessed with my fate
I must go forth and conquer
I see this as him being brainwashed by the dark forces of the world. He becomes obsess with his destiny to end the world and nothing will stop him.
The chosen one to lead the pack
This boiling hate has risen
From the depths of my blackened heart
This madness is my destiny
In here he points out hes the chosen one to bring to lead the demons to bring the end to the world. And as hes brainwashed with visions of his destiny, he sees nothing else then what he has to do. His hate level rises only making him more devoted to his "task"
Temptation befell me
Darkness is calling for me
This is the path that I choose
This is the path that I choose
Forgive me if this is another simple song to do an interpretation on. Without knowing what the album story is, I think its pretty hard to know what the song is about.
Ill be doing Stormrider next.
Good work with the IE lyrics Stormrider.
Tool - Lateralus
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see
There is so much more and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
I embrace my
Desire to
I embrace my
Desire to
Feel the rhythm, to
Feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow, to
Feel inspired, to
Fathom the power, to
Witness the beauty, to
Bathe in the fountain, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral of
Our divinity and
Still be a human
With my feet upon the ground I move myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin
I'm reachin' up and reachin' out, I'm reachin' for the random or
Whatever will bewilder me, whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind, we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out!
Keep going
My Interpretation:
Many people interpret Maynard based on writings he has recommended. While I haven’t read many of his selected works, I feel his lyrics can be interpreted without a great deal of side research—particularly in Lateralus. So I’ll continue into the song…
We are born into the world with no real sense of the world. We start seeing things in black and white, good and bad, 1 or 0. But as we become more aware of ourselves and the world around us, we see these distinct lines blur, new colors, new concepts, are all out there, waiting to be understood, and adapted into our own lives. This is an eternal concept, starting ages ago for our ancestors, and will be for ages. We are here to stretch our own minds.
“Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.”
This is a key theme in the song. It can be interpreted many ways. I fist saw it as stating that over thinking, over analyzing is what differentiates the body from the mind. The eye is not aware it is an eye, but the brain is. That’s the difference. Thus, we are different from every other species of being we know of, in that we are aware, evolve, and grow.
But that’s not the only way to interpret it. Looking at further lines, leads me to believe that he is saying that over-thinking, over-analyzing is what creates a void between thought and action. Generally more contemplative people have a tendency to be more timid, a sociological concept that many may be familiar with. Thus, we must somehow seek the inspiration to act on our ideas. Rather than the usual black and white conversation, we must seek the strength to be open and honest about our ideas, our opinions, to leave ourselves vulnerable.
He continues to stress the need for inspiration. Here it seems like Maynard is writing in retrospection—reliving the agonies he must have had before he began writing, and exposing his ideas to the public. To reach out and be new, be bold, be daring. Bewilderment is a sense of detachment from explanation, to have something new to contemplate—something new to consider.
He then reverts out of retrospection. I feel the desire to… followed by imagery that is incredibly poetic, and powerful, from sadness to elation. Maynard then states, “to swing on the spiral of our divinity, and still be a human.” I still don’t know if I understand this line—but it is essential. From some reflection, he is essentially saying that we should continue to evolve, change, think, act, live, and love, to our fullest—become Godlike, or Christ-like if that image is clearer. Maynard is emphasizing this urge throughout the song, because it is difficult. So many things in society are constructed to block us from this goal. We want to be open, honest, and loving, but in a society filled with cynicism and hate, we need courage and desire to be the best people we can be.
“With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds…” Maynard states that he is just as much a part of Human kind as anyone else. He is open to the world around him, and welcomes everything it has to offer, good or bad. Maynard claims he is living by example, and compels us all to do the same. Following our drives may just take humanity where no one has been. After all, Maynard is not singing to Baby Boomers, or Soccer Moms, he is singing to societies youth. By living our lives, we set examples for others, and future generations, so by living a life of better humanity, we can improve society for later generations.
That’s all I can say for Lateralus now. By walking through that song again I realized myself some new things in the song. I think there is so much meaning in Lateralus that it will never be simply explained, I think it is designed for contemplation.

Comfortably Numb
Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?
Come on, now.
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts,
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
Ok.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more ...Aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working. Good.
That'll keep you going for the show.
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.
Interpretation
Now I may be wrong, but I reckon this song is about Pink's(Roger Waters) Addiction to drugs, which left him strung out, so much tht he had to be drugged to perform. There are also parts of the song, which seem to be what Pink is thinking while he is under the influence of these drugs.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed -Scoring in Heaven
"In other cultures, death is more artistic.
And probably a lot more fun."
I think the lyrics in this 13 second epic symbolize man's confusion with death. The singer/narrator is showing that he is not sure of the "correct" way that death is.
In nearly all societies, death is represented by a symbol to try to humanize (try to make sense of) this event, such as the Grim Reaper, the color black, the gravestone.
Biologically, death can occur to wholes, to parts of wholes, or to both. For example, it is possible for individual cells and even organs to die, and yet for the organism as a whole to continue to live; many individual cells can live for only a short time, and so most of an organism's cells are continually dying and being replaced by new ones.
Conversely, when organisms die their cells can live for some time afterward. Organs, for instance, can be removed for transplantation. They must be removed and tranultures can be "immortal" as in the case of Henrietta Lacks' HeLa cell line.
Fingernails and hair appear to grow after a person's death, as, due to bodily dehydration, the flesh pulls away from the hair and nails. In ancient times, this led to confusion about whether a body was actually dead, and added to the myth of vampires.
Death seems to spawn off many myths. The song title reflects this. Heaven is an afterlife concept found in many religions or spiritual philosophies.
While there are abundant and varied sources for conceptions of Heaven, the typical believer's view appears to depend largely on his particular religious tradition. Various religions have described Heaven as being populated by angels, demons, gods and goddesses, and/or heroes (especially in Greek mythology). Heaven is generally construed as a place of eternal happiness. The relationship between this concept and the celestial sphere is generally believed to have been first proposed by the ancient astronomer-priests.
Jewish converts to this concept of heaven and hell included the group known as the Pharisees. The larger, dogmatically conservative Sadducees maintained their belief in Sheol. While it was the Sadducees that represented the Jewish religious majority it was the Pharisees who best weathered Roman occupation, and their belief in Zoroaster's heaven and hell was passed on to both Christianity and Islam (in which heaven is referred to as Jannah).
In Christianity, heaven is a return to the pre-fallen state of humanity, a second and new Garden of Eden, in which humanity is reunited with God in a perfect and natural state of eternal existence. Christians believe this reunion is accomplished through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ in having died for the sins of humanity on the cross.
In Eastern religions (and some Western traditions), with their emphasis on reincarnation, the concept of Heaven is not as prominent, but it still is present. In Hinduism or Buddhism, for example, there are several heavens, and those who accumulate good karma will be reborn in a heaven; however their stay in the heaven is not eternal — eventually they will use up their good karma and be reincarnated in another realm, for example as demi-god, human, animal, hungry ghost or even hell-being. In the native Chinese Taoist traditions Heaven is an important concept, where the ancestors reside and from which emperors drew their mandate to rule in their dynastic propaganda, for example. In Hindu belief, likewise, heaven—called Swarga loka—is seen as transitory place for souls who did good deeds but whose actions are not enough for moksha or absolute bliss with God.
The idea of Heaven as a physical place has been in existence since the dawn of religion and human civilization. In the early religions (such as the Ancient Egyptian faith), Heaven was a physical place far above the Earth in a "dark area" of space where there were no stars. Departed souls would undergo a literal journey to reach Heaven, along the way to which there could exist hazards and other entities attempting to deny the reaching of Heaven.
The medieval Christian view of Heaven was that it existed as a physical place above the clouds and that God and the Angels were physically above, watching over Man. With the dawn of the Age of Reason, science began to challenge this notion, however Heaven as a physical place survived in the concept that it was located far out into space, and that the stars were "lights shining through from heaven". The work of Dante clearly identifies that Heaven was a physical place, existing in a sphere around the Earth, the Sun, and the Stars.
In the modern age of science and space flight, it is widely assumed that Heaven is not a physical place in the universe. Religious views, however, still hold Heaven as having a dual status as a concept of mind or heart, but also possibly still a physical place existing on another "plane of existence", or perhaps at a future time. Obviously, there is no scientific evidence for the existence of such a dimension, an area of the universe, or alternate reality where Heaven physically exists; however in these belief systems, the failure of science to prove or find evidence for its existence is generally of little or no relevance.
POST 1 OF 2
Poofy 666
12-18-2005, 02:48 PM
In lines 1 and 2, the lyrics reflect that in other cultures death is not just the decaying of cells, or being judged upon by another entity, which may ultimatley lead to eternal damnation in Hell.
Hell is, according to many religious beliefs, a place or a state of painful suffering. The English word 'hell' comes from the Teutonic 'Hel', which originally meant "to cover" and later referred to the goddess of the Norse underworld, Helgardh. Compare Anglo-Saxon helan and Latin celare = "to hide".
In many religions, after death, evildoers either suffer eternally or until they have paid for their bad deeds before reincarnation or redemption. In monotheistic religions, hell is often ruled by demons which torment the damned or is simply defined by an utter absence of God or redemptive force. Many monotheists believe in different layers of hell, and that some are sent to purgatory, or otherwise sent to suffer in hell until they repent and seek atonement. Some believe that all sent to hell can accept redemption if they repent and seek atonement, but believe that there will be those who never truly repent in spirit, and even those who reject redemption and curse God for all eternity in spite of this.
In polytheistic religions, the politics of hell can be as complicated as human politics. Many Hellenistic Neopagans believe in Tartarus, which may also be considered a version of Hell.
In other religions, such as Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, Surat Shabda Yoga, some African religions, as well as various other religions teachings and esoteric philosophies, they believe in reincarnation.
Reincarnation, as a doctrine or mystical belief, holds the notion that one's 'Spirit' ('Soul' depending on interpretation), 'Higher or True Self', 'Divine Spark', 'I' or 'Ego' (not to be confused with the ego as defined by psychology) or critical parts of these returns to the material world after physical death to be reborn in a new body. The natural process is considered integrative of all experiences from each lifetime. A new personality feature, with the associated character, is developed during each life in the physical world, based upon past integrated experience and new acquired experiences. Some reincarnation philosophies express the idea that rebirth is made each time in alternated female and male type of bodies. Also that there is interaction between predeterminism of certain experiences or lessons intended to happen during the physical life, and the free-will action of the individual as they live that life.
Reincarnation is traditionally understood to be akin to the Buddhist concept of Rebirth, but in fact the two concepts are very distinct philosophically - Buddhism teaches that there is no self to reincarnate. An alternative view is that the teachings of Buddhism might stress one aspect, the teachings of Hinduism might stress another aspect, but that an advanced Buddhist and an advanced Hindu would directly perceive the phenomenon of reincarnation identically.
Belief in reincarnation is an ancient phenomenon; in various guises humans have believed in a future life since the Ancient Egyptians, perhaps earlier, and ancient graves containing both people and possessions may testify to beliefs that a person would have need for their treasured possessions once again despite physical death.
In brief, there are several common concepts of a future life. In each of them either the person, or some essential component that defines that person (variously called the soul or spirit) persists in continuing existence:
People live on this earth, and then live in some kind of afterlife for the rest of eternity - variously called heaven (paradise) or hell, or the Kingdom of the Dead, or some higher plane, or similar. They do not return to earth as such.
People die, but will return to the earth or are revived in some final Judgement, or at some final battle (eg the Norse Ragnarok). They may go to heaven or hell at that time, or live again and repopulate the earth. This is often called an apocalyptic vision of the future.
People die, and are returned to this or another existence continually, their form upon return being of a 'higher' or 'lower' kind depending upon the virtue (moral quality) of their present life. This is often called Transmigration.
People die, go through inner planes and return, re-birth, (usually or often) as new human beings. Strictly, it is this which is known as reincarnation (also called "rebirth"). In many versions, eventually there is the potential to escape the cycle, eg by joining God, enlightenment, some kind of self-realization, a spiritual rebirth, entering a spiritual realm, etc.
In Hinduism, cows are considired sacred. The recurring theme in Hinduism is that the cow must be protected, as they symbolize abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. Hindus do not worship the cow, a common misconception, yet it holds an honoured place in society and most will not eat beef even at risk of death through starvation.
In conclusion, "Scoring in Heaven" is about sacred cows. :chug:

Tool - Prison Sex
It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then,
you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
I've got my hands bound,
my head down, my eyes closed,
and my throat wide open.
Do unto others what has been done to you x2
I'm treading water,
I need to sleep a while.
My lamb and martyr, you look so precious.
Won't you come a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this,
I can't stand to burn too long.
Released in this sodomy.
For one sweet moment I am whole.
Do unto you now what has been done to me x2
You're breathing so I guess you're still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
Won't you come just a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this.
I need this to make me whole.
There's release in this sodomy.
For I am your witness that
blood and flesh can be trusted.
And only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind.
Got your hands bound, your head down,
your eyes closed.
You look so precious now.
I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
**** blood and cum on my hands.
I've come round full circle.
My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon.
You look so precious.
My Interpretation:
From the most superficial standpoint, this is a gross song about being butt-raped in prison...not very appealing, so looking deeper's necessary. The following lines are the most important, I would say:
Do unto others what has been done to you
Do unto you now what has been done to me
I've come round full circle.
(quoted from tool's official site's lyrics)
I think it's more about victims turning around and victimizing others. At first they are violated, but with time they "come around" to their predator's ways, and violate others themselves.
This is not confined to sexual predation or just to prison. In fact, it seems more like Maynard means to draw a parallel to other froms...religious "recruiters" seem a good example.
preying on the weak and feeble-minded, they convert somebody to their faith, and they cannot defend against these people so because of weak-mindedness they go along, and ignorantly believe what they're told.
Now, they become the missionaries, and ignorantly follow orders to find "recruits." They victimize other people based on how they were originally victimized.
(I'm not dogging all religious types now, just those who fit this example)
Even a child playing an online computer game can fit it. Someone cheats , and he loses out, so he gets angry and starts cheating, ripping off other people.
The concept of this song relates to many many things, we "come around full circle" a lot, and adopt what is handed to us, whether by a malicious enemy, or by inadvertent ignorance. So keep your third eye open and think about this one...

Iced Earth - Iced Earth
What do I see
On the icy plains
The desolate one
It's my terrain
The wind it blows cold
Howling my name
I am the king
The king of this waste
Can't you see this barren land
Lain to waste
Ravaged, scorched, yet frozen
From your neglect
I am the formless one
I came to save
You are the chosen ones
You'll be my slaves
I stand on the glacier
Above it all
Watching them crumble
Watching them crawl
Iced Earth has risen
Nature will fall
Can you feel the madness here
Drawing you all too near
Earth, fire, water and air
Save yourselves from despair
We are together now
Crush the cowards, do it now
End the light, end the one
We have come to save
the young ones
So on an on
The story goes
Destroying yourselves
The pain it shows
My Interpretation
Since this song is the first song of their first album, I see it as a song to introduce themselves as a band and as entering the metal scene. There is many lines in the lyrics pointing this out IMO. Thats how I see it.
