Alright, i wanna do serious recordings, but i don't have drums and rare acess to bass..all i have are vocals guitars and a cheap yamaha keyboard.
Right now i have a crappy soundcard, comp speakers for my monitors, and the 5$ comp mike. Guitar pro for everything else (synths, drums ,bass) except guitars and vox. Audacity.
I want as good quality as possible, with good volume control and as professional as it can get.
So far here's what i got in my mind to build my own "studio" (? = advice needed)
1)New comp (high speed, good soundcard, extra USB ports)
2)Recording Software (not sure? is mixing/mastering included in this?)
3)Drum Software (Reason? With drumkit from hell?)
4)Other instrument software (if trumpets are needed etc. I'm currently using guitar pro, IMPORTANT - bass.)
5)Studio monitors (are 2 enough? Behringer truth?)
6)Mixer (Alesis?)
7)Mics. (Would be recording vox, guitar (acoustic and electric) and on rare cases bass. Do i need 3 seperate mics for that?)
Also i'd like to layer as many tracks as possible. So far my songs are around 9 tracks, but i expect some to go up to 20. I know audacity can layer that much..but advice needed as well.
Apart from all these i've stated, is there anything i've left out?
I'd be mainly recording vox and guitar, mostly programming bass, drums and other needed instruments. Worst case, i'd use the patch on my keyboard.
PLEASE help, and keep in mind i'm not Bill Gate's son, i do have my financial limitations. Don't go above 10k, but don't give me 10cent mikes and 10$ mixers.
Thanks for all the help, its pretty urgent.

Hmm, I can make pretty damn decent recordings with the gear I've got
Fostex 8-track (£400)
USB Mixer (£120)
PC (Doesnt matter as long as cool edit runs on it)
I'm no help :( But just remember there's always a way of doing things, you don't have to shell out immediately, look at each issue of recording and tackle it seperately, otherwise you might be paying for more than you'd use

I've done a budget for my studio I'm setting up which would probably be in your price range, If you want I can copy and paste it.

Yea, you've got the main idea. Those i've listed are just what i have finally in mind, which means i might get the Reason for drum patches first, and a good mike for the guitar, instead of the monitors..what i need next is a good mike..then i'd consider monitors/mixers.
I just need advice on which to get first, and which to get last.
i got a recording sesssion tml with my drummer (no drums), and there's a 2% possiblity that i can get a decent mike. Seems that i can't do anything now?
How's the quality of GP4 for bass/drum trax?
And KKKK...., i think you'd know roughly what i want since i've spoken to you a few times on IM.

Im kind of in the same boat, so for christmas I'm getting a Zoom MRS-1608, and from what I've heard, it sounds pretty amazing. Retail is 1800 and there on some sites for 799.
I got my MRS1608 yesterday!!! Awesome hunk of love! I recommend getting the UIB2 aswell so you can basically have unlimited tracks and so you can also have all the main editing done on your computer!

That's awesome. Where did you get it from? Many of the sites are sold out. Does it sound as good as you thought it was going to?
