So I have mentioned in a couple other threads that I'm going to start building myself a snare. And, today, I finally got my shell!!!!
Hopefully I can do a good job on this thing. I think if I don't mess it up, it'll look pretty slick when I get it all done. It'll probably be awhile before I can order the rest of the parts since my wife and I splurged on Christmas presents this year, but hopefully I can have it done towards the end of January. We'll see.
Without further delay, here are some pictures.
This is the unopened box.

And here is what I want it to look like when it's all done (I made the color in photoshop, so it might look slightly different based on what stain I get.)

Mine will have the same hoops and lugs, but I'm getting a Nickelworks stainer.
I can't wait to get started on this!! I'm so excited to do it. I just wish I had all the parts now. But expect a ton of pictures as I go. I'll probably get to staining and lacquering soon, but won't do much after that until mid-january.

Where did you get your shell from?
Yeah I was thinking, surely that can't be him, and then I read "my wife and I" so that confirmed it.

Oh yeah, that's my son. He really wanted to be in the pictures. I'm much uglier and fatter.
And I got the shell from Saluda drums (drumgearonline.com)

Considering how they still have no information on their website about their drums, do you know if they do 10" snare shells?
I still really, really want a 10" aux snare

the shell came with... a child!!!
good luck on the snare, man. i've been wanting to get into refinishing drums, but i wouldn't want to drill the holes and everything. a pre-drilled shell, though, and i'm loving it.

That's who I got it from (although I bought it off eBay). Saluda and them merged so Saluda's drum makers do all the edges and stuff on the shells, and they have great prices. They come with the bearing edges and snare beds (if you're getting a snare) pre-cut.

How do I say this, she's... vapourized?
She left a faint scar, not as apparent as a chemical burn but it's there.
I can now touch my hand to my face and stuff without having the fear of spreading.

good luck, looks like it's going to be pretty awsome
Awww awesome man! Cute kid!
I'm sure your snare will come out great. Your goal for a finished product is amazing, and doesn't seem like it'd be too hard to nail.
Gotta love the maple hoops...

Thanks. He's an awesome kid. He's gonna be a lady killer me thinks.
I'm really excited to do the shell. I'm going to be picking up some stain and topcoat and tung oil and stuff towards the end of the week, and then do some practicing on some wood, then get to the shell sometime next week probably.
I love those Stellar hoops. They make some excellent stuff! I just wish they were a little less pricey.
