I've actually decided to not make year end lists anymore. Reason being - I've just personally decided to not put art into such an objective place. I'd prefer to see music as any other art and realize the relativity of it's place and quality - depending on the viewer. It's something I'm striving towards, no matter how impossible.

So, I'm not against other people's lists, but I don't see them as something I'd like to do.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one who has included Antony and the Johnsons so far. I thought that album was really popular around here.

Looks like a lot of my choices are a bit unpopular around here.

I must say, though, that there have been an amazing number of fanastic albums released this year. Devendra Banhart, Cage, Edan, Spoon, Sage Francis, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Hold Steady, and many, many other released fabulous albums. This has been one of the better years for music of the decade so far.

Nothing too terribly interesting hit my ears this year. I'm fond of The Craft,Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall, You and Me and Everyone We Know, Picaresque, Nothing Lasts...But Nothing is Lost, and Sit and Melt.

JonM
12-13-2005, 05:13 PM

My not very thought out top-10, brought to you in glorious alphabetical order.

Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die
Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah - s/t
The Darkness - One Way Ticket to Hell and Back
Devin Davis - Lonely People of the World, Unite!
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Paul McCartney - Chaos & Creation in the Backyard
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
Sigur Ros - Takk
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Kanye West - Late Registration

Pretty standardly boring, I guess. I dunno about having the Darkness on there, but I was struggling for a 10th album, and it's catchy. Plus, it's just a stupid list, so who cares.

Still a few I really need to check out though. My Morning Jacket, Blackalicious, Ryan Adams, Okkervil River, probably some other stuff.

Anyway, in some sort of order, here's however many albums I got that came out this year. There's less than ten, but I pretty much liked them all, so this isn't completely pointless.

Shit guys, Funeral is so incredibly last year that it's not even funny. I'm just gloating though, I had a leaked copy of it before it came out back in 2004.

Am I the only person in the world that thinks it's just a decent indie-pop record with pretty good lyrics? I mean, it's cool and all, but not nearly as great as it's being proclaimed by apparently everyone else in the world.

Funeral was released in 2004, but in Ireland/UK it came out this year. It's the same clause I'll use to justify my inclusion of Rufus Wainwright's Want Two when I get around to making a list.
I just found that out earlier, it's in most of the Ticket's music writers' top five.

I've been thinking about this year in contrast with last year recently, actually. I've found a lot more albums in 2005 that I like than I did in 2004, but I've yet to find a runaway favourite or anything like that. From what I've heard so far, plenty of good albums (3.5-4/5), but none that have been really great (4.5 or more).

Anyway, partly because of this lack of an outstanding number 1, and partly because it's still 2005, I can't make a list yet.

Am I the only one who find the Decemberists annoying?

No. Them, Wolf Parade, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and the rest of those Pitchfork bands all come off as completely useless to me because their shticks get old really quickly.

We get it Decemberists. Sea shanties. Yeah. Sung by a guy with the most annoying voice this side of that dude from the Mars Volta.

mr_jackalope
12-19-2005, 12:38 AM
Sung by a guy with a bigger vocabulary and more wit than the vast majority of current popular artists.

Bigger vocabulary means nothing to me; I go to a world class university, I know those words too. A majority of his lyrics are forced through this obnoxious thesaurus-filter that makes them come off as incredibly pretentious. Lyrics that actually mean something to me are direct and use the vernacular, not the contrived and awkward manner of speech that he uses almost nonstop.

If I want wit coupled with brilliant lyrics, I'll listen to the Silver Jews and the National.

The Silver Jews' American Water, one of the greatest albums of the 90s, should be mandatory listening for posting in this forum. It's beyond breathtaking.

And Alligator was the best album released this year (a classic in my eyes), so yeah, I'd suggest that one too. :chug:

And yeah, I've gotten plenty of flac elsewhere for my feelings on the Decemberists, I'm nearly unphased. No hard feelings.

That's the thing, it isn't too terribly out of the ordinary. It just happens to perfect the sound, and I think that's what can be considered its innovation. Every single line of the lyrics are interesting and the guitar playing is the most delicated, detailed, and intricate this side of Six Organs of Admittance. I doubt the band will ever do anything like this again, because it's one of those things that just happens...they were on those few weeks they were recording in the studio, and created a monster.

Yeah, I agree it's pretty flawless.

I just personally like a little more genre meshing in my music.

Still, I can see why somebody that loves indie-pop would love it.

It's all personal perference.

I'll never understand it. He's an extremely mediocre rapper with cheesey lyrics and average beats behind him. I suspect that it's the fact that he's not "gangster" and is easily digested because his lyrics are uncontroversial. The ultimate white-boy namedrop rapper of the moment, if you will.

When my favorite band of all time is the Beach Boys, I don't think you can acuse me of not liking pop. Real pop music is about as good as it gets, honestly. Kanye is a joke of a rapper who uses some slightly inventive samples and "intelligent lyrical themes" as I heard one person say. Blackalicious and the Roots beat him at that game easily.

Spat Out Plath, don't even bother.

Kanye is a joke of a rapper who uses some slightly inventive samples and "intelligent lyrical themes" as I heard one person say. Blackalicious and the Roots beat him at that game easily.

As opposed to Cage, an MC with an slightly above average flow who hooked up with Def Jux to revitalize a joke of a career built on gimmicky "offensive" lyrical themes. It's not like the Geto Boys beat him at that game handily. Or Necro or Eminem for that matter, both of whom stole his game and did it better to a degree. Hell's Winter is his best, but it's still meh. Which is sad, given the names involved. I guess I still just can't relate.

Edan's album is solid, though. But is it really all that surprising that people would pick Kanye over those two? Simplicity and derivatives sell plastic.

Wait, why am I defending Kanye? Fuck them vittles.

Such an awesome, awesome single, even if the Stereophonics went lame.

And I bow down to Robert Crumb, who's much more up on it than I am, really. Cage, Edan, and Sage Francis (I know I know, the generic-answer to favorite indie rap albums, but they really are killer) were my favorites released this year. No one has really given me a good reason why he is an amazing rapper, as some people claim. His beats don't sound too interesting, and his lyrics are horrible.

Very few people claim him to be a great MC.

Okay, then what exactly is so good about Kanye West if his lyrics are crap? The redundant beat? His "geniusness" since he's so smart (let me remind you his embarassing public spew about how Bush hates black people)? The typical overdone, cliche "controversial" lyrics? Late Registration keeps popping up on every top album of the year list and I really do not see why. He's just another rapper that white kids can namedrop and feel proud of themselves that they listen to rap.

It's fun to listen to, maybe. But I don't think it has enough merit to top other worthy albums. Gwen Stefani is fun to listen to, but no one has put her cd in their top 10.

Maybe they prefer Kanye to Edan? It's not impossible to fathom that. And I'd nominate Gwen Stefani's Cool for one of my favorite tracks of last year.

Ooh and Steph, how did you like Daughter Darling?
