My band and I are recording at our guitairsts house next week. Were going to be recording the guitars and bass going straight into the mixer so theres no problems on that front.

I was curious to find out what quality of sound were likley to get with a mic on the bass drum, snare, overhead and possibly one by the toms. Were not aiming for anthing near a professional sound just to get a rough idea of our new songs sound.

Anyone have any tips for the recording process on how to get a simple beat down?

Cheers,

Jon

What kind of mics are you using?

1 low price condenser and 3 dynamic Shure SM58 copies.

It'll work. It won't sound great, but it'll work. Chances are you'll have to include the toms in the overheads as they go the whole way across the kit so getting them all in one mic just for toms will be pretty hard. Move the condenser around. Try it on the snare and then on the overhead. If you have a ported kick that'll be a big plus. Put one of the dynamics slightly inside of the kick. That'll isolate it's sound a decent bit. When you have that kind of limitations on your mic choice, moving stuff around and trying as many positions and techniques as possible is key. Try everything you can think of.
