Now let's begin!

-------------

Featured Genre: Gothenburg Metal
Birth: 1989
Current Status: Alive
Origin: Gothenburg, Sweden
Founders: Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gothenburg metal is a style of melodic death metal. It was first started in Gothenburg, Sweden. The bands come from Gothenburg, but some bands from Finland and other parts of Sweden have a similar sound to Gothenburg, and they helped inspire Gothenburg bands. Many bands that fall under this category are associated with the melodic death metal movement.

The first "Gothenburg" band was Dark Tranquillity, who started in 1989. Now, some of you may say it is stupid to call Gothenburg it's own genre, but if you listen to Gothenburg for a long time, then listen to melodic death, you can really hear the difference. Gothenburg has some elements of thrash metal (drum lines and guitar riffs.)

Dark Tranquillity had started as Septic Broiler, who only released one demo before changing their line up slightly, then changing their styler and name to Dark Tranquillity.

In the late 1980's, and the early '90s, a new death metal scene arose, centered primarily around Gothenburg and to a certain extent, Stockholm, Sweden. It also included Finnish and Norwegian bands. The Swedish and Finnish bands, inspired by thrash bands in the '80s, including Bathory, were more popular than the Norwegian bands, who were influenced strongly by black metal. The bands from Norway usually had keyboards and "chaotic riffs", known as blast beats.

The first "wave" if you may say, of Swedish death metal, consisted primarily of the bands Carnage and Nihilist, who eventually formed into Entombed, Dismember, and Unleashed.

These bands used a guitar sound that was formed by linking together two distortion boxes to create an electrical buzz sound, thus making the music sound more distorted and melodic. Using tremolo picking and faster riffs than most death metal, they represented the greatest death metal success outside of America. Later, the melodic death metal sound known as Gothenburg was pioneered by bands such as Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, and In Flames.

The guitar harmonies and melodies are much more present in the guitar work. Even though it is more melodic than death metal, it is considered by some to be more raw then most bands that come out of America. The riffs used by Gothenburg bands formed a "riff-lexicon" that is commonly used by many bands that would be considered metalcore. Lots of these bands have risen in popularity, especially after 2001. Some people mack the genre calling it Gothencore, seeing as it came from Gothenburg. Many metal fans consider this genre to be separate from true death metal, which I believe is completely right.

The vocals are usually screamed, or growled. Usually though, it is a combination of the two. There are only a handful of bands to be true "Gothenburg", seeing that you have to come out of the city of Gothenburg, since it was started there, and that is what the genre is called.

The lyrical themes are similar to those of death metal. It is usually about the darker of society, of course death, sometimes politically themed, and
others base their lyrics from horror movies.

Dark Tranquillity

Gothenburg was all started when vocalist Anders Fridén, lead-guitarist Niklas Sundin, rhythm-guitarist Mikael Stanne, bassist Martin Henriksson
and drummer Anders Jivarp founded a band called Septic Broiler, a band that were considered to be regular thrash-metal.

In 1990, the band released a demo entitled Enfeebled Earth. They soon changed their name to Dark Tranquillity, and dropped the thrash metal
sound, and focused more on being a death metal band. In 1991, they recorded the demo for Trail of Life Decayed.

In 1992, Dark Tranquillity released the 7" EP titled A Moonclad Reflection. Only 1500 copies were printed, the first edition with the Slaughter
records logo, the second edition with the Exhumed productions logo. However, the music began to focus on guitar harmonies and complex song
structures. They had become more melodic, and they brought back some of their thrash roots. Elements from NWOBHM and melodic death-
metal were added also.

In 1993, the band recorded Skydancer, their first full length album. In 1994, Fridén left Dark Tranquillity, while Stanne took over the role as singer in the band, and guitarist Fredrik Johansson was added to the line-up.

Dark Tranquillity continued to release numerous full length albums, gaining more and more fans as the albums progressed. In 1999, Dark
Tranquillity released Projector. The album experimented with electronic elements and an some styles equvalent to melodic death, while Stanne
occasionally sang with "an extremely tearful voice". The album was a huge success for their hardcore fans, but they gained quite alot new fans as
well. But afterward, Johansson left Dark Tranquillity, and bassist Michael Nicklasson and keyboarder Martin Brändström were recruited, while
Henriksson switched to the guitar.

They released six albums after that, including a live album, an EP, and a double disc set that includes songs from the first four demos and EP's
that were released back in the '89 and the early ninety's. Their most recent album, Character, was a huge success. The press and the fans both loved it, and the band was somewhat returning to their earlier roots. They are currently touring Europe, and they plan to continue releasing albums.

At The Gates

Next, we will discuss At The Gates. They are also credited with being one of the first bands to spark the Gothenburg genre. They are a great
band, lots of interesting stories, but they don't have a website, and the biographys and histories I found were very short.

I will try my hardest.

------

At the Gates were a band who are considered by many to have had a great influence on the Gothenburg genre. Originally formed in 1990 after
the band Grotesque broke up, the band combined thrash metal with death metal in Gothenburg, Sweden, crafting a unique sound. Their most
famous album is Slaughter of the Soul, released in 1995. They have inspired many bands out today, including In Flames, Hypocrisy and Edge of Sanity. The band also influenced many modern American Metalcore acts, such as Darkest Hour.

When At the Gates broke up in 1996, drummer Adrian Erlandsson, bassist Jonas Björler and guitarist Anders Björler formed The Haunted. while
vocalist Tomas Lindberg joined and left many bands, such as Skitsystem, Disfear, The Crown, Lock-Up, Nightrage and The Great Deceiver.
Adrian Erlandsson soon left The Haunted to join Cradle of Filth, a gothic metal band from England. There have been rumours about the return of
the band to activity, but band members say it's all fake. It would be really awesome to have them get back together, but that won't happen. At The Gates derserves alot of information, but I just couldn't find any. I'm sorry. :(

In Flames

Ah...In Flames. One of the more interesting bands I know of. They combined Gothenburg with harsh death metal, adding acoustic songs also.

It all started in 1990, Jesper Strömblad decided to leave of the band he was in, Ceremonial Oath. He teamed up with Johan Larsson and Glenn Ljungström to form In Flames. They made a demo that was sent to Wrong Again records in order to get a record-deal, which they did. The owner of the company enjoyed the music so much that he immediately gave them a deal over the phone, as they called him up one night. They then wrote the album Lunar Strain.

They had some members for awhile, they left, and the process repeated
for some time. They also "borrowed" some members from different bands. The band then released an EP called Subterranean, that became a milestone for In Flames, in terms of getting out off the underground scene. The album got them a deal with German company Nuclear Blast for the next record, and they have been there since then.

They recruited Anders Fridén and Björn Gelotte to join the band, on vocals and drums, and In Flames were a complete band.

They then released The Jester Race, gaining more fame and fans. They gained fame around Japan, and also in Europe. They were liscensed to Toy Factory. They went on a tour together with Samael, Grip Inc. And Kreator. This was the first big thing that happened to them.

The band recorded Whoracle. Johan and Glenn then sadly left the band. Luckily they were good friends with Peter Iwers and Niklas Engelin, who both happened to play bass and guitar. They helped out with the band for awhile. They liked doing it, so they were asked to stay permanantly, which they accepted.

Together the group continued onto a successful tour in Europe and an Japan, where they did their first two shows. As they return to Sweden, Niklas left the band, because he had some different opinions, and the fact that he wanted to focus on his other band, who were called Gardenian. In Flames then decided to switch Björn from drums to guitar, (who was originally a guitar player), and they recruited Daniel Svensson on drums, who had been in the band Sacrilige. It proves a success, and the band released Colony, one of their biggest successes.

The tour they go on for Colony takes them around the world, to Europe, USA and Japan. They filled up venues everywhere they went. They continue to celebrate, and the response is excellent all over the world.

Around August in 2000, after a few years of successful touring, the band releases Clayman. This record was extremely popular for them, and the sales were far more than those of their previous albums.

In Flames then toured with Dream Theater, "Slipknot", Testament, Methods of mayhem, and other bands, for a world tour was to be expected. In Flames played lots of shows in Japan and Europe, along with only 2 American tours . The band toured other places, the same as last year, only this time the places were bigger, more people were attending, and they had more songs to play.

In Japan, Jesper received an award from BURRN! As the number 1 songwriter of the year. Peter Iwers did not join tour with the band, as he had had a baby girl back at home, and he had to take care of her and his wife. But he joined in for the Scandinavian and Japan dates. He was temporarily replaced by Dick Löwgren from Armageddon for the other tours. In 2000, In Flames played around 150 tours! Afterward, the band to a long break to rest up and enjoy some free time. Peter returned to In Flames in 2001. The band played four live shows, one in Gothenburg, which was on four TV stations, and was played on live radio.

The band made a video for the song Only For The Weak. The band then toured in Europe for a bit. They played 13 shows in front of more than 200,000 people.

They played at Waken, as in some other festivals, and recorded Live In Tokyo, before heading over to America for some tours.

Another album was made, Reroute To Remain. This time though, it was with a different producer, and a different studio. The band toured even more, gaining more fame and a larger fanbase. The day after that show they played with Metallica, which was a huge success, playing in front of 30.000 people. It was the biggest non-festival show they had ever played.

They then recorded Soundtrack To Your Escape in 2004. It was a big success, with even more tours and fame. They had rented a small house outside of Sweden to do the writing, to prevent any distractions. It proved worthy, as the wrote 11 songs, and two more when they went back to Sweden.

They just recorded Come Clarity, however it is not released yet. Pretty much everyone has it though. They will probably have another tour or something.

Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy was formed by guitarist Michael Amott after his departure from the his old band, Carcass. Arch Enemy first got attention after the
release of metal milestones Black Earth, Burning Bridges, and Stigmata. The albums were quoted: "Propelled by flawlessly technical dual guitars and a previously unheard of mixture of melody and aggression, which helped them to quickly solidify their reputation as one of Gothenburg's elite bands."

They then recruited female singer Angela Gossow for the album Wages Of Sin. The media and fans were shocked that the vocals were coming
from a girl. (They are very, ahem, manly) She liked singing for Arch Enemy, and they liked her, so she decided to stay. They toured with Opeth and Nile before coming to America, where they headlined shows. The album Anthems Of Rebellion was then released, gaining lots attention all around the world.

The band headed back out on the road and completed lots of U.S. tours over the next year with Slayer, Hatebreed, Cradle Of Filth and Iron
Maiden, a European Tour with Nevermore, another European headline tour as well as playing huge European festivals like Download, Rock Hard, Fields Of Rock, Graspop and Tuska. Then, the band released “Dead Eyes See No Future EP". It was a huge sucess, and included numerous covers, as well as a music video.

Arch Enemy have now released Doomsday Machine, their most popular album to date.

How is copying and pasting 4 bands discography song by song considered a long write up?

By the way, this is a pretty poor FG as you posted it extremely to soon.

Other people's FG's took weeks to create, which should tell you something about it. You slapped this together in a few days, which it really shows through...

Nice job Jay - it takes a lot to do one of these, even if a lot gets copy/pasted you still have to do the research and think which bits to include or leave out.

As for those who had a pop at him for his efforts - if you're all so brilliant, why didn't you do it yourselves, eh?

I'm sure it would have been perfect in every way, and much better...

Most of those bands are significantly worse though...

Either way, pretty good writeup. Does a decent job with details, and is full of some great facts.

I actually did reviews of many of those (well, 4) albums up there: Projector and Character by Dark Tranquillity, and Stigmata and Doomsday Machine by Arch Enemy. You can have a looksie at those, if you want.

PS, that's not just another chance to whore reviews. There's some decent information in there for those of you wanting to learn more. :thumb:

I fail to see how Arch Enemy fit in with the Gothenburg scene? Apart from having Adrian Erlandsson's brother on drums.

Some band that are also well worth checking out -

Eucharist (how this band wasn't the biggest out of all of them I don't know)
Crown of thorns (Later The Crown)
Sacrilege

Tomas Lindberg's old band Grotesque was also highly influential although more old school orientated.

POGROM: I don't think there is a Death Metal band like us today, nor was there ever. Perhaps one could argue that bands like BOLTHROWER or something still play war-inspired death metal from the old days, but I cannot think of another one still around or even similar. DESTROYER 666, SADISTIK EXEKUTION, are more along our lines as far as lyrical content go, but as far as musical similarities we strive to be unique, but not strange on purpose. I believe that our aggression and vocal style is what pinned us under the Death Metal curtain. Our music is a mixture of various metal styles, with thrash and death metal dominating.

HOLOCAUSTO: No, I don't know of any bands similar in motives and scope either (save perhaps Bathory at times), and Bolt Thrower assumed a passive voice about war and military conflict anyway. As far as bands I respect today, there are few that still merit my enthusiasm. Most of the bands I listen to do not exist as such anymore: AUTOPSY, IMPETIGO, VIO-LENCE, SADUS, TERRORIZER, DEVASTATION, FORCED ENTRY, VADER (old material), INCANTATION, ABOMINOG, CORPUS ROTTUS, CRUCIFIER, etc., and these bands are fueled by far different things than we are. I respect them because they never faltered; they never diluted their sound or lyrical animosity and yet never became stale.

Some bands that have definitely influenced our sound have been VIO-LENCE, RAZOR, CORONER, CARNIVORE, BLOOD FEAST, RIGORMORTIS, DARK ANGEL, KING DIAMOND, AUTOPSY, WARGASM, FORCED ENTRY, DESTRUCTION, POSSESSED.
Thats as good as I can do.

Well im a big fan of Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth so i listen to melo death all the time and i also listen to Dark Tranquility and In Flames. I think that melo death is a lot more complex and Gothenburg is very atmospheric. If you listen to Arch enemy you noticew that the drum beats are fast with a lot of double bass but Dark Tranquility's drummer only uses one kick. In melo death it changes tempo a lot and the riffs a more complex. That probably didnt make sense to anyone but i tried.

That probably didnt make sense to anyone but i tried.

wait isn't Arch Enemy Gothernburg, because they seem to have the same melodic writing as dark tranquillity and In Flames. I still can't differ them two, LOL.

King_Of_Terrors
12-26-2005, 11:12 PM
Well Arch Enemy somewhat has a Gothenburg sound, and two of the band members come from Gothenburg, so I just threw them in the write up.

Depends on the album, really.Early stuff was most definately Gothernburg, basically a much better version of At The Gates, but the later stuff(since they got their new singer) has been more of a tendancy towards a commercialised, simpler sound.Similar to In Flames in their development(except of course infinitely superior. But hey,I HATE In Flames,so who am I to talk...) in that they started making shítty music by the time shítty music became totally popular and one could say,if one stays in present tense, that they are not Gothenburg but once were.
