ok, so I found out my crappy recording quality is due to buffer sizes.
here is my setup:
guitar/mic/input into Tascam MA-8 Preamp (if needed) then into an Edirol FA-101 Firewire Interface, into Digital Performer on my mac.

here is a sample of my crappy recording quality: http://blacktopforward.com/02%20Track%202.wma

I went to my local studio shop and they told me it was the buffer sizes. so I made the buffers as big as I could - 2048, made the the buffer size per voice big as well (900kb) and things like that. and I still have the problem. I don't mind about the delay large buffer sizes cause for the time being, at the moment, my main priority is getting rid of those stupid cracks and stuff.

so if anyone could help me, I'd be really grateful, thanks.

I'm really not sure that it's a buffer size problem... it sounds more like bad cables perhaps? I may be wrong.. but buffer sizing is usually a dropout cause, not quality degradation as far as I know.
