I think some of the best live albums are Iron Maiden - Live After Death, Iced Earth - Alive in Athens, and Blind Guardian - Live

Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Iron Maiden - Death on the Road (Paschendale live is amazing)
Blind Guardian - Live (I'm assuming this is the same show as the ITTLG DVD except with some songs cut out)
Death - Live in L.A. (Death and Raw)
Testament - Live in London

hopefully the new Rhapsody album will be on this list.
as for ones that are out right now, i'll say S&M just because the song No Leaf Clover is amazing. it's also cool to hear Metallica classics played along side an orchestra.

dream theater: live at budokan
I think it's crap. They play all the songs pretty much exactly the same as the studio version, which rather contradicts the whole purpose of a live album.

Umm it doesn't contradicts the live album purpose, you just hear bands who don't have the ability to play similar to the recordings.
Also, how come this live songs are similar to the studio's version:
As i Am, Instrumedley, New Millenium, Beyond this Life and the improved solos.
I know all that and i'm not even a Dream Theater fan.
You must hear the complete album and also watch the DVD.

The purpose of a live album is to show that the band can play the song more than once...and that it isnt just a lucky recording...IMO

Kiss...Alive
duh.
And any Maiden, Iced Earth, Manowar, or Rhapsody live record is bound to be good.
