I listened to a few songs by them. They're okay.
But.. love metal... of all the fakey, made-up genres I've ever heard of, that is by far the most pretentious.

Not really. They're sort of a... lite version of the modern Goth rock scene. Very accessible.
I don't really think they're bad at all, but they're unbelievably pretentious.
On a side note, is that their singer in your avatar? Christ, somebody buy that guy a meal at a buffet or something. Ghandhi weighed more than him.

Which album and where did you hear that from? Because I'm pretty sure that Jukka has been with Nightwish from the start.

Depends entirely on where you ask. In America, it's more likely people know about HIM and not Stratovarius.
But if you ask anywhere in Japan, Europe, or South America, chances are that Nightwish will be the first band they think of.
Of course, even here in the States, our backward little behind-the-times culture is starting to catch up and see Nightwish for the brilliance they are.

Although melodic metal bands are really popular in those countries. Just ask Arch Enemy.

Please don't use IM shorthand around here. It's gratuitous and gets on a lot of people's nerves very fast.
Anyway, this shouldn't really surprise you. HIM have become a very divisive figure in modern music. Partly because of their mainstream success attracting scores of poseurs to the scene, partly because of how grossly overrated they've become, and partly because of their obviously pretentious opinion of themselves.

Sadly though, more people can tell you they know about HIM. HIM is more popular and widely known than all of them (except for maybe Nightwish) at least where I'm from, perhaps largely due in part to them being Bam Margera's favorite band.

That's fine. I'm hardly one to argue with someone over their taste. The closest I ever get is trying to convince others to broaden their horizons.
I just want to establish that there are some bands that you have to be prepared to put up with some flack for listening to. I'm one of the resident power metal junkies, but I also enjoy some nu-metal and have had to put up with some idiots for it occassionally.
I freely admit to liking both Judas Priest and Green Day, Death and Less Than Jake. Every now and again, some wanker is going to give me grief for it, but it's not as if I can't verbally crush them like insects anyway.

If you're referring to "love metal" I should probably clarify for you that very few around here recognize that as a legitimate genre. It's not a genre unless more than one band is playing it.
You see, we're currently going through a nasty trend where everyone and their mother is trying to make up new genres, and they're really getting stupid. Forest metal, ice metal, Australian war metal...
HIM are more of a Gothic hard rock band.

No, that was actually included in a list of genres some re-re posted last spring.
The funny thing is, the only example I can think of that I've ever used is pirate metal, to describe the band Running Wild. But I never tried to pass it off as a genre. It's just a name fans came up with because Running Wild is a power metal band that sings about pirates. We're also often very protective, insisting that Running Wild is the only band that sings about pirates, and that's the way it should be.
I'm very aware of the fact that "Love Metal" is not considered a "legitimate" genre.
Alright then. Just thought I'd say it, just in case. Very few people around here are disrespecting any genre. They just don't like HIM.

It's not that we don't respect the other genres it's just, since their is this sudden rush of new genres reaching the metal scene a lot of people feel the need to narrow the genres down. Their are enough genres as is, we don't need a genre for each band.

I know, it's insane. Everyone is making genres up, and only a select few are ever recognized by any significant portion of the community at large. In the power metal thread, we've had page after page of jokes about what kind of obscure sub-genre we'll come up with.
