This was an idea I had going through my head:

Sometime I like to make Top 3 lists about obscure or unusual things around music. For instance, to start this thread off:

Top 3 Songs with Rain effect Intros
1. "Quarantined" by At the Drive-in
2. "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath
3. "Raining Blood" by Slayer

Top 3 Overtly Drug Inspired Songs
1. "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath
2. "Junkhead" by Alice in Chains
3. "Smoke Two Joints" by Sublime

Top 3 Physically Draining/Taxing Songs
1. "Commuted" by Khanate
2. "Death Becomes You" by Sunn O)))
3. "In Her Shadow" by Converge

Top 3 Terrible Uses of Choir/Orchestra/Strings in a Rock Song
1. "Supertzar" by Black Sabbath
2. "Broken" by Seether
3. "November Rain" by Guns 'n Roses

Top 3 Space/Science Fiction Related Songs
1. "Walking on the Moon" by The Police
2. "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath
3. "2112" by Rush

Hopefully this should give people an Idea how to contribute to the thread, make sure to observe the rules when making the thread so no overdone lists (solos, genre specific, etc) and try not to use the words best/most/worst when making your thread. It need not only be limited to songs.
And my apologies for the excess of Sabbath in my lists, wait, actually screw that. Black Sabbath rock. HARD!

I think the 16 consecutive "**** you I won't do what you tell me" 's in Killing in the Name by RATM pretty much smash every state, damns every "the man", and viva's every revolucion!

but 1 and 3 are real good choices too :thumb:

Actually perhaps I didn't make it clear, but the songs I chose for the Physically Draining category were all songs that I found....difficult to listen to. I've developed a rather varied taste in music so that I'm no longer put off by music thats either too soft or too heavy. But something about those songs just had a quality about them that just made me feel drained.
For instance, the other day when I was listening to songs off of Khanate's "Things Viral" album...I literally had to stop listening to them and just take a break from it. Perhaps it was emotionally draining, but I thought of it as physical just in the sense that I literally told myself to stop listening to it and to listen to something else for awhile.

That song was "Unretrofied" wasn't it? It's just one of those songs that a band can become known for even though it doesn't represent their sound. I mean, the best-known song with Billy Sheehan on it is Mr. Big's "Next to Be With You." It's a cheesy power ballad! Nobody's gonna say "oh yeah that's the band with the amazing bassist!"

So there's my idea for a top 3 list:

It is weird to hear Metallica backed with an orchestra, but it isn't bad and by far is not even in the top 3 of terrible uses of orchestras.

Of course ELO is better because they wrote their music with orchestration since the begining; not wrote the music first and then arranged it.

You've never seen DEP live, clearly. The whole band moves as one chaotic machine, and yet for all their thrashing around they still play their songs flawlessly. When I saw them the drummer didn't even count off the tempo by tapping his sticks. They just KNEW exactly what to play, and often it's Puciato who starts off the song (as he did with their set-starting "Panasonic Youth").

actually i saw them on gigantour and they where nothing like you decribed they dident play flawlessly (unlike dream theater) the vocals i couldent stand along with alot of the older metal heard so most of them left, and to top it all off they had to ran around the stage like 5 year olds.

Puciato said that the band doesn't get good crowds at Gigantour because they're filled with people in medieval-print dragon shirts and ponytails who came for DT and Symphony X. I'm inclined to agree with him, but at the show I went to the crowd was really into it. The band jumped around a lot but they still played everything perfectly. Dream Theater was flawless too, but they just stood there (but to be fair they often had harder things to play).

Either way DEP was the most entertaining band there, and I had no clue who they were when I first saw them. I was converted.

Actually any song from Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album could have gone on that list, as well as any Johnny Cash cover.

Top 3 Musicians to introduce a unique instrument to rock.

1. Ian Anderson with the flute.
2. Jon Lord with the Electric Organ (which often ran through a distortion pedal).
3. John Paul Jones with the mandolin.

great idea for a top 3, mine would be:
Tony Levin use the Chapman's Stick, that instrument is kinda unique in rock or metal.

George Harrison and the sitar.
And Ian Anderson.

I think those dudes should replace Jonh Paul Jones and Jon Lord, the organ is kind of unique but it can be replace by a master keyboard and Jonh Paul Jones wasn't the best mandolin player.

So are you saying that going to an orchestra concert is pointless because they don't move around? Seeing a band live is about seeing them play, not whether they do some asinine stunts. Those stunts just add to the performance.

Different context. Different types of music. I don't mean I expect the bands to do mad stunts, I'm just saying moving around on stage is very important for a live act.

And a double bass player isn't exactly going to be jumping off the Timpani.

Is it really a different conext? While Rock is natoriously more agressive, that does not change the interaction of the band and the audience when it comes to the musical aspect. I guess i disagree, to me a live performance isn't about interacting, movement, etc. To me the instrumentals tell the story, and make a live show great, they make the energy real.

But, I guess that is just me.

What do you actually mean by misguided? The only ones of those I have heard is Diamonds And Rust and its not a hell of a lot different.
I meant misguided as totally missing the point of the song. Diamonds and Rust was originally Joan Baez's ode to Bob Dylan, and the JP version is very much upbeat and a bit too jolly. (I'm talking about the cut from "Sin After Sin", the track from "Meltdown '98" with Ripper Owens is much closer to the original).
"Green Manalishi...." was originally a very slow Fleetwood Mac blues song and as for "Johnny B Goode",well, everyone knows that one right? Why Priest, why? Chuck Berry would be turning in his grave....if he was dead...is he dead? I dunno!
