View Full Version : progressive rock and metal mailing list?

Would anyone like to start a progressive rock, metal, and jazz mailing list? It would be bands that are into any type of progressive rock and metal, whether it be jazz fusion, 60's and 70's prog, or prog metal.
I could upload some symphony x and opeth while we start. I just need more people contributing and maybe someone to administer the entire mailing list.

Go to www.deliciousagony.com and listne to their radio.
They'll probably play much more varieties of prog than anyone here could muster up. I mean, not many people listen to progressive rock these days. So the names Marillion and Riverside won't mean much since they aren't "popular prog rock." It's sad,r eally.

People should really stop with the mailing lists...
All it does is fill peoples inbox's full of albums they probably won't listen to more then once. And also, since they get it so easily they won't appreciate it very much and also leads to the whole entire most likely not listening to them more then once.
And besides, all these people that sign up for multiple mailing lists are lazy to just find the bands your self.
Even lazier music pirating, nice.

I've heard Riverside, I've got to listen to them a bit more. Well I was thinking we could send full albums, instead of songs. Or we could do a collection of songs every day or on some regular schedule. The radio is fine, but I think it's better if we could have easier access and through a mailing list it seems easier.

IMO some mailing lists are okay but I really don't think that the smaller genre ones are really needed. Don't get me wrong...It's great that people are taking the time to do this but, if the people aren't listening to them some aren't needed. This is all just IMO.

well, it's always fun to have some sort of genre specific discussion, and I think it would be great to share some music related to one specific genre instead of getting albums of genre's that aren't even related to rock/metal.
If you guys want to, we could just keep this thread as a discussion and mailing list thread for progressive rock and metal. So we can maybe send out regular emails, maybe bi-weekly emails that have songs and albums of prog bands, and then also discuss everything related to prog. How does that sound?
I think that a new mailing list would be a bad idea. There's way too many at the moment. Neurotoxin mentioned something about an integrated mailing list, which I think would be a better idea.
That being said, I love that people are taking the time and effort to do the lists. I could contribute heaps of prog albums but now's a bad time for me. Bi-weekly emails sound better. Personally, I'd love a discussion thread for the albums sent via the Daily Upload(I've only signed up for that) or another mailing list that sends out prog. If you're really keen, I could send you Arena and Soft Machine(a wee bit more obscure prog) to start you out. I'll be back on dial up in two-three days though.

Well i could help with the early prog rock and prog metal albums you will need, but i agree that there are too much mailing lists. The forum is alive almost only for those mailing lists who fill the first 2 pages and dont encourage new topics for discussion.

well it seems that prog isn't too popular so that's why I wanted to create a prog specific mailing list, but like I said, we could make it a twice a week thing and have this thread to discuss about any prog.
and instead of sending just albums, we could send each other songs too.
I'll create one for now and see where it heads, post your emails.

I know a fair amount, and I asked others to help me out so that we can expand each others' knowledge of it. I've been getting into Yes, King crimson lately and other early prog so I don't know if that helps. I wouldn't mind if people shared the more rare prog bands that not many prog fans have heard of.

Seriously, just drop it. You're not the forum. I'm pretty sure everyone knows you don't like mailing lists, but there are other users that do. Mailing lists are completely optional. If people like having their inbox full of albums, then so be it. Maybe they won't appreciate the albums that much, but that's their problem, not yours. And that last comment... I won't even start.
Mailing lists will stop when no one is sign(ed/ing) up.

I think there should be some more mailing lists, but from genres no one has covered yet, like jazz, classical (I think there is a classical one), electronica... We have too many rock-based lists. And there's only like 2-3 I even pay attention to myself.

I endorse this post. An integrated R&M mailing list would rock.

I tcould bother people even if they're not signed up, cause this would be like the 8th mailing list thread that clutters the first page.
but I'll kleave everyone free in their choices, it's just my 2 cents :)

That's why, a while back, I suggested to ATC that all of the R&M mailing lists merge. Once someone signs up to one, they're signed up for them all. All uploads are sent to one person, then that person sends all of the links out. This system will reduce the amount of emails people are getting. Not only that, but it'll reduce the amount of the mailing list threads that clutter the first page.

I think the only thing that is cluttering the first page of R&M are the bloated official threads.
An integrated mailing list, for rock, would be a good possibility. But I would still love to see a mailing list of a genre that hasn't been done yet. I would gladly sign up for a mailing list of trip-hop or jazz. I would do my own, but I don't have enough albums of either genre. Maybe it would be a mutual effort between users, like 3-4 to a mailing list. I like how users are helping out the mailing list starters, that means people actually pay attention to the mailing lists.

I can voice my opinion where I like, and if you don't like it please use the ignore function.
I am not telling people to stop, and if they don't stop I will come to their house and kick their knees in or something. I am just giving you people something to think about when it comes to all these free albums that maybe not every one involved in receiving them has thought of.

I have really been into Pain Of Salvation, as I can't stop listening to their music. There is something emotionally epic about them that I feel connected to and do not want to let go. I'll have to upload one of their albums or a few songs for you guys if you haven't heard them.
Pain of Salvation's really nice. I've listened to a fair bit of 12:5 lately.
Some prog I've listened to way too much lately is Age of Silence. Possibly the best supergroup around, I love their quirkiness. An album about a shopping mall as Hell is just the kind of thing that makes me giggle like a little schoolgirl. The music's effin awesome as well.

do any of you have any ideas on how we can make this mailing list better?
How bout this, bball?
Make it a very focussed sort of mailing list. If you were to send out (for example) a Porcupine Tree album for an issue, send it along with only similar bands (Kino, Blackfield, Arena etc) in that issue. Prog has so many sub-genres within it that only a focussed list would be sure of maintaining interest.
Just throwing that out there. If you like it, keep it. If not, feel free to throw it right back.
I want to be on you.

that would be cool, but I'm not too informed on bands that sound similar. I tend see every prog band different from each other, and that's what I love about prog!
If you guys can gather bands that are similar to each other, I can throw out an email with them.

This would be great if someone had the time to do a bunch of research each week but when you have people randomly contributing from their personal collections, you are going to get a variety of stuff. The one thing that I think would really be helpful is if the mailing list was scheduled. I upload stuff for other mailing lists and by the time the person running the thing sends it out, my links have expired and that pisses me off. Something as simple as: It is going out on Sunday night, I must have your submissions by Sunday at 8:00PM. If you do this I guarantee you always get at least one album from me each week.

I've only had occasional trouble with YSI, if you get something up once, email me the link and I'll upload it a couple more times. I could never get another uploaded with megaupload but you could try that. If it is just single songs, you could set up a soundclick account and rotate the songs as new ones are contributed, I'm not sure if there are copyright issues to worry about with doing that though.

so what do you guys think about the recent list of songs/albums?

It seems to be working out pretty well. Good content.
Which do I upload next? Rush- 2112 or Pain of Salvation- Remedy Lane
