Don't wear leather! Buy fakes, they're just as good. The whole Doc Marten "punk" look is just another ploy by the fashion industry to control a scene, like Blink 182. Go to different charity shops and find a comfy pair of steeltoed boots. The most comfy boots are ones already broken in.

Doc Martens are high quality boots, have always been high quality and you pay for that quality.
I used to think buying storebrand boots would be just as good, and these ones are already falling apart.

Practicallity ends at mass slaughter for fashion. You're a farmer who's coat is old and falling apart? Fine, shear a sheep, kill a cow, make a leather coat with a wool lining and have roast beef for Sunday. But no one needs a fu'cking pair of mass-produced leather boots when there are so many just as good substitutes around.

Or maybe they don't have political ideas like that and just want a pair of good boots and would prefer not be preached at.

Buy good ones that aren't made of leather. I do. I spent 20 quid on these ones (cheap as chips) and they've lasted me through rain and shine (literally). Through rainy Scottish fields at the G8 protests, in Palestinian desert, through hasty escapes from scenes-of-crime (ie. DSEi protest, I did something bad).

It's not stupid it all. It's completely valid. Doc Martens may have started out being a part of the punk attire, for their usefulness, but now every other shoe company makes a similar model, and the only reason Doc Martens are selling so well is that they have a reputation as being "punk" and so fashion punks buy them, just like they buy patches from big companies. You know I saw a Ramones Gabba Gabba Hey patch that says on the bottom in tiny sewed on writing that it is COPYRIGHTED? Gabba Gabba Hey is a copyrighted phrase. You see what fashion does? It fu'cks up the whole point of punk, and now Doc Martens, though they may once have been a rebellious icon, like mohicans, now they are just another fashion trend. And one that costs lives.
I'll discontinue the discussion now.

buying old boots is nasty and gross. when you wear boots and break it in, the shoe breaks in to the shape of your foot. get used ones and they were probably used by an old fat sweaty skinhead anyway.

Brazos Jungle Combat-styled work boots are the best and only $20 for a brand new pair. I've had mine for over 4 years and they're still in perfect condition. They're not steel-toe, which I would ahve preferred, but then I bought a pair Demonia's 10-i. Although they're not good quality and fell apart very quickly.

I know you all had the vegan argument and I want to avoid that, but I'm planning on going vegan and I really would like a pair of 14 eye docs, but I can't really in good conscience buy them a few months before I go vegan. So I was wondering if anyone knew if Dr. Martens made any non-leather 14 eyes, or if there are any VERY good knock offs, and if so, where? Thanks in advance.

Boots are so expensive because there is a lot of work put into them, no matter who makes them or what they are made out of. The things are huge and usually made the last, so it's going to cost a bit extra.

I'm not sure about Docs. But my cheapo store brands have lasted me about a year so far and only have some cracks in them.
The whole Doc Marten "punk" look is just another ploy by the fashion industry to control a scene,
If you're part of the punk "scene" or living the "lifestyle" something is being marketed towards you. Being part of any group makes you into a demographic. If you don't like it, don't bother with punk anymore.
Everything is being sold one way or the other, whether it's popular or not.
