Something a friend of mine and I were messing around with today:

Play a phrase that starts with 8 eigth notes and ends in 4 sixteenth note triplets, that is,

R L R L R L R L RLR LRL RLR LRL

(sorry, I can't tab, but hopefully you get the idea...)

The phrase lasts one bar of 4/4, but there are 20 total notes in the phrase, so one could phrase it in groups of 5 by dividing it among different drums, for instance simply playing the first subset on the snare, then high tom, low tom, floor tom.

R L R L R | L R L RL|R LRL R|LR LRL

makes for some interesting phrasing, its kind of like drumset applied Chaffee Time Patterns.
just something I'm playing around with. there are a lot more possibilities for odd phrasing, just thought this example might illustrate the point.

I hope that made some sense.

That's excellent stuff man. Great to see that kind of creative thinking.

Gary's Metric Modulation book is awesome for this stuff. I'd recomend checking it out.

I like the idea, very creative and fun to play. Though, just to let you know, I'm pretty sure that lasts a bar and a half in 4/4. Not trying to nit pick, just thought I'd say that to make sure no one gets confused. But very cool to start on 3 and take till the end of the next measure, possibly to start off a solo?

Dude this whole thing is taken straight from Rick Gratton's first lesson...

ah, thats what was wrong, Gratton has them as sixteenth notes, not eights. Still a cool lil rhythm, but unless you honestly came up with it yourself while practicing, give the man his due credit.

Exactly. I think it's copied because the threadstarter didn't understand the concept properly. It doesn't add up to a 4/4 bar.

no, i meant 16ths actually.

It's not copied, well not by me. As I said the idea came about when i was fooling around with a friend, and he very well may have seen it before. I don't recall him mentioning seeing it, but it's very possible. We were playing with some things in chaffee's books, and he's one of the best drummers in KC under 20, so he's probably seen it before. Anyway, sorry if it was unoriginal, just sharing it cause i thought it was cool.

Oh no don't take me the wrong way. Sharing stuff is good, as i'm certain there are people who haven't seen Gratton's work which they should. I just don't like people taking credit for other people's work.

But, i'll hand it to you that it's a very nice topic to bring into the Advanced section, as we get alot of n00b threads here.:)
