View Full Version : Planning to buy a Stingray, 4 or 5?

I played the 4 strings stingray before and I love it, sound great and the neck feels really good espeically for funky bass.
SO....i plan to get myself one this x-mas.
But I don't know if I should get the 4 or 5 strings. I have alway been playing 5 strings bass, and I want the extra string for more verstaile music. I also often use the 5th strings as an anchor to rest my thumb when playing (so I can play freely near the neck or the bridge depending on what sound I wanted)
On a 4 strings, it seems I can only play where the pickups are and rest my thumb on the pickup.
But...since I never tried the 5 strings stingray, how does it feel compare to the 4s? I know the neck will be wider (i don't like it), but how does it sound comapre to the 4s? Do they sound almost exactly the same (EADG string)? Does the B string sound nice? I tried a dozen of 5 strings bass and most of the have a VERY weak B strings sound (quiet and loose)
And most important, how's the playability compare to the 4s? Since the neck is wider, I guess it is not as good, but are they very similar or quite different?
*I have been to several stores, and none of them have a 5 string in-store, so I can't try them out.
Also, anyone knows where is a good place to buy them in Toronto area, (Ontario, Canada) other than long & Mcquade (they are somewhat expensive, esp if you compare to online prices)
Thanks for the help!

That's one of the most misinformed and ignorant posts that I've ever read. Clock, I'd get the five string if I were in your position.

I know I want the 5 strings, but then, the main reason why I wanted to buy the stingray is because I love the way it plays on the 4s. And I didn't want to fork up $1500 for a bass I don't actually LOVE.
I know I will be happy with a 4s, but I wanted to know if i would be happier buying the 5s :naughty: . (That's why I am here asking question...maybe people who have played both)
Also..the reason I ask is because 90% of the stingray I see (people around me, shops, internet) are 4s, and 5s doesn't look very common. (On average, a lot of people play 5 strings bass guitar, it seems only on the stingray it is not common)

I have actually played both, at the time I played the five string I prefered the four. However, that was before at a time that I played four string excluseively, now that I own a five string (not a Sting Ray) I'm almost certain that I would prefer the five string.

The notoriously "bad B strings" on Fenders are due to the stock Fender strings. I've played a fair amount of Fender five strings and I've never noticed one having a horribly loose B string, and the ones that were slightly uncomfortable were in stores. Theoretically, the strings should be as tight on a Fender as they are on any other bass of the same scale. If they weren't, a change of strings and a set-up would make them that way.

If the b string is horrible and floppy, increase the gauge (I think I get 135 for the b, and then standard 5 string set gauge) and it'll be tighter. But like said above, thicker string and a set up will sort it out nicely.

I'd go for the five, but that's because I prefer five strings over four strings.
I remember when I went through a phase of loving Stingrays a year or so ago. I loved everything about them, and I wanted one for the longest time. Then I picked one up one day and something just switched in my mind. From that day on, I've never liked Stingrays all that much.
/pointless story for the day
get it at steves music in toronto, that place is wicked.... and go for the five string more range = better

It's not all that ****ed up. I mean, I'm sorry that your friends died, but so many kids cut. It's become natural to make jokes about cutting and such. Yes, it is a serious thing, and I know many kids that cut/did cut.
I never really saw the point in cutting.
Some do it for attention, and others do it as a way to escape.

lawl if a hat can kill someone, then they deserved it :thumb:
so if i take a hat, hold it over your face until you can no longer breathe, and you die, you deserved it?
"lawl" if people are dumb enough to contemplate suicide, they certainly deserve to die, and i hope they're all successful in their attempts.:thumb:

its the people that fail at suicide that get me,i mean .... how the hell
seriously. they fail at life, then fail at death. that's a double whammy like none other.
not to mention, suicide is illegal. so if you fail, when you wake up in the hospital, there will be a nice police officer with a set of shiny handcuffs to place over your slit wrists.:)

I bet you 97% people who live after "commiting suicide" are just attention whores, the other 3% actually suck at life.

well for your information i have played both 'stock' Fender 5's and set up ones and they both suck in my opinion :thumb:

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend or upset you. I'm not a Nazi at all, and anyone I know that has been into cutting has been far from suicidal. The cutters I've known have been more transcendental. I changed it for you though.:thumb:

I didn't like the string spacing on the 5s that much. It felt too cramped to me.

i have a stingray 5, and i love it. its one of the best playing basses ive tried. yes, the neck is wider, but the string spacing is perfect. the 3-way pickup mode switc is also very handy.
