jus for fun.. whats the sound check your band uses at the start of their shows?
im in a completely original death metal band but we start of with smells like teen spirit.. not the whole song though.. jus the intro until the start of the verse, no verse, directly into the solo then fade.. its pretty good.. ppl go crazy when they hear the intro riff...

Call me crazy, but if you're checking your sound, surely you should be using something at least in the style you intend to play in?
I'd hate to have to set up a band for death metal based on them playing Nirvana...

Teen Spirit lost it's magic a while ago :(, but whatever.
Yeah, like Alex said, seems a bit strange...

123.
My band tend to soundcheck with a song we are planning on playing. Or at least something in the same genre. Just makes sense doesn't it.

Your threads suck.
You suck.
We soundcheck with a chorus of a song we play later up in the setlist.

Soundchecks are the lamest and most boring thing about playing live, especially if you have a number of bands soundchecking before you.
We just soundcheck with a song that has all rhythm and lead bits to try and balance it all out.

My band sound check with whichever song we are least confident about so we can get a (very!) last minute practice in.
In my old band we used to always do soundchecks with funk songs since they would always turn heads. Jungle Boogie, Brick House, Rappers Delight, etc...

Sound checks aren't for turning heads. play some stuff you'll play during the show. So that you can CHECK YOUR SOUND.
You suck.

Seriously look at his other threads he's started. He should calm down the thread making a bit.

I beg to differ...they shouldnt be just to check your sound. Soundchecks, for me at least...are to loosen up, get aquinted with the stage and surroundings. Play whatever the hell you want during a soundcheck. But yea it should be in the same ballpark of what you are gonna play, like dont do soundcheck with a metal song if you are gonna play jazz tunes.

With my new band, our sound check consists of playing random crap till we balance the volume of the drum machine PA, vocal PA, bass amp, and 2 guitar amps on stage, then let the soundguy take over for the FOH mix.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that their postcount isn't going up when they post? :(

You usually DON'T wanna play something you are gonna play during the set, at least in my experience. You want to play contrasting parts of songs to get a feel for the general sound throughout the set, but if you are playing set songs during sound check people are less excited when they hear them during the set...

Thats actually a good point i forgot to make, not about not playing songs from your set, but about making sure you play contrasting songs to check the variable sounds and dynamics
